I really hate it when they showcase nothing but trailers for games at these events and try to build up hype through just that alone...

Fortunately, there's a bunch of gameplay footage that came out of E3 and the game looks great. Can't say I'm all for the constant chatter and having to pick dialogue options just to proceed. Sometimes you just want to pick up quests and blow shit up.

Apparently they're looking to combine the immersion factor of a regular (regular for bioware) RPG and the gameplay and community of an MMO. I definitely think it's an interesting experiment, and I will without doubt buy the game on release, and most likely play it until I've at least experienced the endgame. I am somewhat concerned as to how easy it is to immerse yourself in an MMO world. When playing an MMO i experience lore as something that essentially only slows down your leveling, and I've gotten very good at skimming quest logs for relevant information, discarding all the rest.

That said, as I was writing this and was about to conclude that it probably couldn't be done, I did play the first 20 levels of age of conan on release, which featured a starter island (Tortage) that was completely narrated and had a rather living atmosphere, and I felt really immersed. The only problem was that as soon as you left the starter island you ended up with the same old, and you really noticed how much it was missing.

In my mind, if they manage to make their regular kind of RPG (narration does amazing things for immersion, but is also a lot more work than just writing quest logs), and manage to make it open world and balanced I think it could be great.

Does anyone know how they'll be handling classes and customization? I ask because while I have a special place in my heart for old SWG-type profession systems those don't lend themselves very well to balancing and the min-maxing that is inherent to MMO play.

Sith are just as powerful as the Jedi though (as a whole). It depends on each individual circumstance as to who should come out on top.

There are other classes in the game besides force users. That's the thing that will most likely break the immersion for those Star Wars fanatics when they can't use their force powers in PvP to steal another player's weapon and batter him over the skull with it.

The way that one of the lead devs said in a G4 chat was that the Smugglers (San Holo-esque class) which the players are, are like the top super-duper Smugglers in the galaxy and not your run-of-the-mill smuggler. So, basically everyone is super-awesome and Force-users are just going to be spellcasters.

It didn't break the immersion when Obi-Wan wasn't able to just roflstomp the Bounty Hunter in Episode 2. What breaks immersion are things like Force Unleashed which is more like Star Wars meets Dragon Ball Z.

Consulars/Inquisitors are going to be more spellcaster oriented Jedi/Sith but still retain the ability to use a light saber while the Jedi Knights/Sith Warriors will focus on light saber combat but will still have some force abilities.

I won't play it most probably even though I am a huge fan of star wars and fan of both KOTOR I and II which I finished multiple times. I just don't have time to play regularly so I can only really play single player mode.

I would love though if they made KOTOR 3. Probably will never happen unfortunately

I think they are in a good position with this game. It has a single player feel like KOTOR but with the option to play with friends in groups, player vs player, and with the mass effect developers you know the story is going to be great. I liked wow, but could never get into the story of wow. I think this is where KOTOR will shine.

Yea, the thing I was getting at is the difference between force users vs non force users. I completely agree it doesn't break the immersion, people (read fanatics) just get some wierd fucking vaunted impression in their mind that jedi/sith are all powerful and thus would not be hit by an attack from a normal mortal.

Something people need to also realise is that even between the MMO genre there are a MASS of different game styles that appeal to completely different players. What this one is aiming for is the type of player who can really get into the story of a game and their character within it. I don't see this game being the most polished end-game PVE or PVP scenarios, instead focusing on the story.
What I am worried about is running out of story and being stuck with nothing to do. They will need to include enough variation in storyline between different characters to keep alts interesting, as well as keeping a constant flow of story in the way of content patches.
The evolution of SC2: T or P comes up with something abusive and Z goes "I gotta deal with THIS shit too?"

i really want to play and get into this game, because i loved playing wow with friends and end game raiding. My problem is i feel i wont be able to play this and sc2 (and eventually diablo 3) at the same time. kinda feels like it can only be one or the other, since MMOs have the tendency to take over your life, or all of your leisure time at least. anyone else feeling this?

well even if you don't want to get bogged down in end-game I'm sure it will be worth it just to play through the storyline because Bioware's storyline's tend to be amazing

The PvE (player vs environment) looks solid. I wonder how the world scale PvP and the designated "battlegrounds" will work out together.

But now all the classes have been reviled, and some further specialisations have been unveiled also (like the Sith warrior can either become a Juggernaut or a Marauder).

Anyway, the game is scheduled to come out in Spring 2011. If anyone is interested they can sign up for testing the game on their site.
