Awesome writeup, Thanks for the info about the FA system that is soon to be. How long are koreans supposed to be in the airforce... when they leave the airforce are they too allowed to be FA?

not really, only 20something progamers are eligible to become FAs. the next round will be in 2011. sure some of them will be major players, but if their team really wants to keep them and they enjoy being on that team they will end up staying there.

this is exciting for teams like woongjin, a team with bad results recently that might be able to buy a big name, perhaps a stronger terran card?

the length of military service keep shrinking, but as of now i think its like 22 or 24 months.

because their games on ACE don't count towards the FA counting system, they don't meet the criteria to become free agents until 2011 assuming they play at least 15% of the matches. but then again, as soon as the are out of the military they are technically... free agents? lol

hi mnm. you're cute.

200 percent reimbursement for free agency? That's basically 2x the NBA's luxury tax but applied irrespective of team's current payroll. that is absolutely ludicrous and a lose-lose situation for everyone:

1.) It reduces the player's bargaining power. the original team knows that any opposing team which wants to sign the free agent has to pay 3x the contract demand of the free agent ( contract to player, 200 percent reimbursement to other team).

2.) It restricts a team's ability to sign free agents, thereby limiting the competition and giving the original team an unequal amount of bargaining power. Teams therefore will only look to sign players who they consider capable of giving benefits equal to 3x the cost of the contract. That's crazy!

Flash: If I think back on it, due to my win at such an early age I think I got too cocky to believe I don't need to change to become better. I will change so my weaknesses will not be as obvious and become a better player.

remember that not all the rules are quite set in stone yet. they are still tweaking with things.

but yes i agree it seems a little high.

rofl your location is USC.

yeah someone needs to introduce Korea to the NBA's salary cap structure. if they leave this sort of compensation plan, that's basically a Poison Pill + Luxury Tax + Restricted Free Agent Compensation all tied together.

Glad to see that I wasn't the only person who was floored by this part. I mean, it makes no sense. Considering all the professional sports leagues out there, there are plenty of models for KESPA to analyze and decide what works... and THIS is what they come up with!?

To further expand on your #2, this scenario will only happen if one team has an absurdly high revenue compared to another team in order for FA to work. Or basically something like the Yankees signing players from the Pirates, because their payroll differential is so huge. I think this results in more competitve balance given the lack of a salary cap, since it prevents a really rich team from just signing everyone. But if they wish this, why bother with FA in the first place?

In the end, I think a soft cap ala NBA's CBA works best. Teams can retain the players they develop, and bad teams can clear cap space for impending FAs to improve quickly. Good for competitve balance and for team loyalty.

honestly, this actually gives the high-revenue teams more power since they're the only ones that can afford to pay the compensation fee.

since the rules are still in the transition phase let's give them time to settle things out. i really hope they revise the rules though. Korea has had a long history of miscalculating labor/business relations and this will only further add to it if it's not changed.

I have been waiting for this article.

Still there are some things that confuse me. How can Luxury be eligible for free agency? Shouldn't free agency come into play when the contract expires? Lux just signed with KTF, and I doubt he got a 5 months contract. So if Lux is eligible, it means he can just opt out of his contract once given FA status?

no of course he's not going to leave KTF after 5 months haha

its just saying that he's one of the players that is able to become a free agent based on the requirements kespa as set.

So the FA status kicks in automatically once his contract with KTF expires, right? I'm kinda confused with that part in the article that says these players have to choose whether to gain FA status or not come 2009. Aagghh! So many questions pop in my mind about this. Maybe we should make a FAQ for the FA.

I assume that if KTF decide to not renew Luxury's contract or whatever, then other teams can put up an offer to him.

Then KTF will have to match it or else they will lose him.

Since we don't know the length of these players' contracts, it would be fruitless to wonder where everything stand. It's possible that many of these players have contracts extended beyond the date of FA. This shouldn't just pertain to Luxury, but other players like Savior and Stork too. Just because KTF bought his contract from OGN doesn't mean his contract is any longer than the other players.
