Why not a flat 2000?
2000 was the default set ELO for all Pros when they enter. Generally, 2200 means a player is one of the best, and 2300 is only reserved for Bonjwa-level players. I know that Jaedong and Flash aren't on the same level career-wise as iloveoov or Savior, but for half a year when they made their peaks, they were almost as dominant, but simply without as many titles.
2285 - NaDa's peak and he still was a bonjwa
Yea, out elo rankings have been subject to inflation (normal in elo ratings). What was a bonjwa level rating in the past (2200+ ie boxer) has risen over time to 2250+ and now 2300+. What's amazing about oov is that he set the elo peak record at a time where the level for bonjwa would be about 2250; so he was smashing it! If oov had done that today, he would be sitting at a cool 2370-2400 at the moment i would think.
Once again, inflation explains all. :D
How does inflation affect elo ratings? Just wondering. |

ELO always inflates. As more players join the pool the bellcurve shifts to the right. The shift causes more players to have higher ratings which cause the top end ELO to get higher and higher and higher.

Why would you wish something bad against another player? Is Bisu really that bad? Or are you all just immature grudge holders? I just don't get what could make someone hate a player so much. I mean, I dislike certain players a lot but I don't say things or wish things against them. |

| You don't dislike players enough to want them to lose? It's not like he wants Bisu to get hit by a car, man. I personally want Flash to keep the ELO peak too. It's nothing against Bisu specifically, I don't want anyone to pass him. |

That's not always true.
In chess there is actually the tendency to deflate some when people's ratings are higher than their actual skill b/c of both rating ceilings & the deterioration of ability due to old age.
USCF is inflating.. slowly.. because of countermeasures they took against deflation. Uh, well, here's the wiki on ELO that will help explain:
The most straightforward attempt to avoid rating inflation/deflation is to have each game end in an equal transaction of rating points. If the winner gains N rating points, the loser should drop by N rating points. The intent is to keep the average rating constant, by preventing points from entering or leaving the system.
Unfortunately, this simple approach typically results in rating deflation, as the USCF was quick to discover.
A common misconception is that rating points enter the system every time a previously unrated player gets an initial rating and that likewise rating points leave the system every time someone retires from play. Players generally believe that since most players are significantly better at the end of their careers than at the beginning, that as they tend to take more points away from the system than they brought in, the system deflates as a result. This is a fallacy and is easily shown. If a system is deflated, players will have strengths higher than their ratings. But if they take points out of the system EQUAL TO their strength when they leave the system, no inflation or deflation will result.
Rather, in the "basic form" of the Elo system, the cause of deflation is the fact that players improve. The cause of inflation is that their strength relative to their rating will tend to decline over time with age. Since most players improve early in their career, the system tends to deflate at that time. Inflation doesn't occur until much later in a player's career. Many players will quit before this natural process occurs, which would return points to the system. The net result over time is deflation.

No it doesn't - new players always add 2000 points, so the points available per player doesn't change (except for some small effect due the retirements, which can be either inflation or deflation depending if players, on average, retire with more or less than 2000 points).
More games in a short time (like with strong players in WL) probably does lead to somewhat higher peaks though, since you get more games in when you're in a good state and playing above your rating.

Thats right, the ELO inflates. Take a look at the chess, it took about 50 years to feel the difference. This process needs decades to kick in. The inflation between NaDa's and Bisu's ELO is most likely around 2-3 points. |
