To blatantly steal another idea from the SA Forums, would it be possible to create a script which identifies a post that is cause for banning?
SA uses a format like this:
oh hey man im hella retarded sup howz it goin in dis thred guys dude ps im soooo drunk rite now lol
(USER WAS BANNED FOR THIS POST)
The latter message is added automatically once the offending post is flagged for a ban/probation.
It would also be neat to have links that point back to the offending post from the Ban Thread, so people like me can be like "haha man what a dumbass."

I think usually users are banned for their post history and not only because of one single post. But when the cause is really a single post a backlink from the banthread could be interesting. Sometimes the admins already do that manually.

Admins don't really want to highlight bans for people to point and laugh at... It's not something they do for fun, lol.

I don't mean for the sole purpose of laughing at people, but more to set a precedent. "Hey, don't be like this guy. This post was bad and it got this dude banned." "Oh snap, that dude got banned, I didn't think that post was that bad, maybe I better step it up."
Also, for a track record of bad posts, only the post that broke the camel's back would be flagged as such, but then the reason mentioned in the Ban Thread would explain the ban further (if it's not evident from a single post).

sounds like a good idea. maybe not only bans, but also warnings. it can help show people how NOT to post. ... or in the banned section, show the post that got them banned (instead of in the thread itself). or both.
|
Well when people get banned primarily for a specific post it is usually in the automated ban list thread.
Most of the time it is for their entire post history anyway.

Ya, very rarely do we ban just for one post unless its incredibly retarded (and thus obvious why the person was banned anyway). And usually we quote the post in the ban thread anyway.
|
Another side effect of that is the fact that people take the opportunity to post in the thread for the sole purpose of saying 'lol you got banned'

i actually think this is a really good idea
it's not really useful for permanent bans because those are either explained in the ban thread or are totally obvious, but we do give out temp bans for singular bad posts and it could definitely be a boon having a big threatening message under an unacceptable post
passive reinforcement of the rules and so on

passive reinforcement of the rules and so on Yeah probably.
Could you implement something similar for when a user is warned as a result of a specific bad post? It's frustrating when you see a really bad post and you wonder if they were warned or if nothing happened haha.

I'm just a shameless lover of shadenfreude so I check the ban thread every day for my own enjoyment's sake. Seeing justice being done feels good, that's one of the reasons COPS is so entertaining.
Then I myself get banned and it becomes clear the cops are crooked. :p

Or seperate it from bans and simply give mods the possibility to mark posts as unacceptable which adds the sign. But I don't think that is necessary.

I don't think this is necessary, (although it would make me happy)
If we do end up having stuff like
( YOUR POST SUCKS, TRY HARDER )
Threads would be derailed by massive comments of "LOL U GOT WARNED NOOB" and encourage more flaming inside the thread.
Unless ofcourse, big red letters of SA only apply to bans, then I guess it could work out.
|
how about a feature that automatically PM's someone when their thread is closed. this will hopefully put an end to new posters continuously creating the same thread because they think their old ones are disappearing/forgot to hit post/etc

I don't think that's too much of an issue, SMB. It happens maybe once a month to me and I just PM the guy and keep closing.

It doesn't say the reason, just
(USER WAS BANNED FOR THIS POST)
or
(USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST) which for us would be a tempban.
Then you would look up the reason in the Ban Thread. Showing this information doesn't derail threads on SA, possibly because it's commonplace. Anyway the reason for the ban/probation isn't mentioned in the actual post.
