Well there is a sports&games forum where this would be more appropriate.
I was intrigued by that thread, eve sounds like a really deep game. I'm not sure if I want to start playing an mmo right now though, especially one that is so old. there's probably a crapton of a learning curve isn't there? |

There seems to be enough popularity in the General forum thread to merit an S+G post.
Plus, S+G never gets many new threads ~~ |

| There will be plenty of people, myself included, who have preexisting obligations in EVE and won't be joining the TL group, so the #teamliquid channel is a way to keep everybody in touch. |

me and 2 of my friends just picked up 14d trials after reading the metagaming thread. We're all entirely addicted now and have played practically non-stop. I was wondering if there was a liquicorp or something of the sort. =)
I'll see about joining you guys. It would be refreshing to be in a corp who will understand what I mean when I say "afk for a few hours" at 18:00 KST. |

Precisely! I recommend everyone give it a shot. Very complicated, but also very complex in a good way. If you play Starcraft then the complexities shouldn't discourage you from eve. It's BALLS fun.
(I'm super addicted right now after playing for 3 days. Not hard to get into action and the room for development is massive.) |

Also the purchase price is 20 dollars which includes a month. WAY cheaper than WoW, and way more rewarding. (I've played hardcore WoW, don't get me started.)
Okay, enough adverts. |

Yeah, you can be useful to a corp even if you don't play a lot. As long as you do things the corp needs you to do when you're on you should be fine almost wherever you go. Some corps throw people out for extended activity or have participation quotas but those are the exception rather than the norm.
Dexxus, I need to talk to you in a chat at some point. |

My only problem with this game is that is directly rewards play time. Not effort, not skill, just the literal amount of time you have had your account.
I don't care how great the rest of the game is, that is stupid as hell. |

A counter point to this is that it doesn't necessarily reward people with no lives, who play it more than the casual players. As long as you're on when your skills are done to research new skills, you will not really fall behind someone who plays 10 hours a day. In that sense, it doesn't require massgaming as much as like WoW. In WoW, you need to play a lot or you won't really be useful to anyone. In Eve, as long as you've had your account for a decent amount of time (which, considering the complexity of the game, is a good thing.) you have access to high end stuff. |

is there a cap on "skills" or "attributes" or any of that stuff?
basically, if someone has been playing for 3 years and you decide to start playing, will you ever be able to catch up to them?
I will admit that it does look fun, especially if you were in a well structured guild or clan or fleet or whatever they call it.Last edit: 2009-02-25 09:38:36 |

Hey dexxus, you seem extremely knowledgeable so I hope you don't mind me throwing this question at you:
I read some of the stuff in that thread and I was thinking about playing the game (at the very least I want to take it for a test drive with the trial). What I'm wondering is, is it at all possible to play the game with any success without joining one of those big corporations? I'd prefer to just do my own thing rather than move in a big group. Obviously the only way to reach the pinnacle of the game (as in any MMO) is to play for years and have a high position in the very best guild, but can you at least have some fun and get a decent ship without any of the corporation nonsense?
If it is possible, is there any race/ship that favors this kind of play? I guess that's a lot more than one question, but I appreciate any answers. |

i asked one of my friends who played eve this and they said that you can do most things after a month or two (if you go straight for it that is) and alot of the stuff after that is just letting you do more things, though this might have changed, this was awhile ago. |

It is possible to play the game as a loner, but it definitely isn't ideal.
EVE is best looked at not as a game per se, but as a simulation of futuristic politics/humanity in the future. Unlike other games such as WOW or Starcraft,"Playing EVE" isn't actually that thrilling all in itself. There's very little to putting ships together and flying them around. What makes the game so unique and fun are the political aspects and watching the results of your actions, not necessarily the actions themselves (as is the case with most games).
People (mostly the bitter vet crowd) often joke that 95% of EVE can be enjoyed while not actually subscribed, all you have to do is read the various forums. To be honest that isn't very far from the truth.
Despite all that, it's a game I'll probably never unsubscribe to if for no other reason than the fact as I feel it's the only active MMO that's really making use of the unique properties of the MMO genre and I wish more developers (hi blizzard) would lean more in a sandbox style direction for their MMOs.
There's nothing to really lose for trying the game out, but I honestly feel the only way to enjoy actually playing EVE is to do so in a mega-corporation such as Goonfleet that plays a major role in the politics of the game. Otherwise you're really just a spectator in the major portion of the game and you can do that unsubscribed.
Just to put it out there, while there are easy to get 14 day free trials everywhere, you can get 21 day trials from subscribed players which gives you a little more time to get a feel for the game. If anyone wants one PM me their e-mail and I'll toss one your way. |

Aurra is right that doing it solo isn't ideal, especially if you have any pvp aspirations.
I'm not so sure about the joining a corporation in a large alliance part. I can't speak from personal experience (don't care for 0.0 warfare) but many people have fun just doing their own thing in a small pvp corp.
They pretty much just do what they want. There may not be as much depth or impact as with 0.0 warfare, but there is the benefit of less lag, blobs, and boring POS shooting.
People should try both to see what suits them though.
If anyone was wondering, I would try 0.0 if I had a better computer. I simply cannot handle 100+v100+ fleet fights. I can barely handle 50v50, I fall behind a lot when we're burning through gates Last edit: 2009-02-25 10:15:48 |
