yeah for the first few months of owning 7 I thought this as I was not getting any freezes under Windows 7 at all. But within the past month I've had it happen like five times, which is too much for me. Now I run a dualboot setup with XP and 7.
That seems as though it's a recent change, not something that you just randomly avoided until now given the sudden frequency. |

| Again, I really don't think Windows itself is at fault for any of these problems. |

So from the sounds of it. If you are using Windows 7 and get this crash and this batch file does not fix it...your just kinda screwed?
To top it off, my launcher will not launch the damn game in windowed mode, so I can't even fix it by doing that. Tells me to reinstall Iccup launcher, but that doesn't help at all -_-.
Anyone find any solution that works when none of this already posted doesn't? |

1.Close winamp. 2.Go into NVIDIA control panel and set Starcraft to use only one GPU(I'm using a gtx 295 so if you have a single GPU gfxcard this one won't be necessary) 3.Turn vertical sync off for starcraft in NVIDIA control panel.(doubt this one matters) 4.Go to your Starcraft directory, right click on starcraft.exe, properties, compatibility, check mark all boxes except disable desktop comp and disable display scaling.
5.Open notepad.
copy/paste:
cmd.exe /C start /affinity 1 D:\"SC"\"Launcher"\"Launcher.exe" ping 127.0.0.1 -n 2 taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe ping 127.0.0.1 -n 2 cd C:\SC\StarCraft\ rem cmd.exe /C start /affinity 1 D:\"SC"\"StarCraft.exe" rem Wait for the game to quit, press Enter to continue pause start explorer.exe exit
Replace those paths with what you have for said files, save as .bat file. Now when you wish to play start SC by clicking the file you created, it kills explorer until you stop playing. You can also create a shortcut of the file and make it look like SC so it looks prettier. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm about to go play SC all day so if I crash I'll edit this post with a something like 'fuck my life', if this is still here then it's working.
If you need help with any of the steps please post the question here and you might want to pm me.
What do we replace in D:\"SC"\"Launcher"\"Launcher.exe"

If SC runs fine on Windows 7 (including colours), then give such advice. Killing explorer.exe is also an option but it is inconvenient.

| I'm bumping this for a good reason. Is there really no fix for this problem? I tried the bat file + checking almost all the boxes in Starcraft.exe properties, but still the crashing problems continue to occur. And yet, my friend, who has Windows 7 Ultimate, is experiencing no crashing problems. What do I do? |

Did you set it to compatibility mode for windows 95, with 265 colors and the altered resolution, 640*480 because i just reinstalled the client and i had no problems at all.Last edit: 2010-06-30 22:48:25 |

Yeah, that worked fine for me. Can't remember if I needed to set the affinity to 1 CPU (after its loaded, alt-tab out, go to Task Manager -> Right Click the exe in Processes -> Set affinity) like I've had to do for several other old games lately like Thief 1 and TA: Kingdoms. |

Be sure to not have winamp started when playing BroodWar. Seven + BW + Winamp = crash.
When I'm lucky, I can play one game before crashing the game. Without it, no problem since 6 months. ^^ |

Don't think that this step is required, at least not for me. BW has been running like charm <3

Yea i remember reading about this, didn't it have something to do with the .wav files and how they are used by SC:BW?

It's a good question ! I know you can listen music while playing Starcraft with Windows Media Player, VLC, probably nearly everything, even a selfmade player. Winamp is the only one on my computer which can crash it. If someone knows why, I'm interested. |

it doesn't have anything to do with other programs running. You can have nothing else running and it may still crash.
The only workaround is using window mode with chaoslauncher or iccup launcher |

Right click the SC icon in the actual folder > Click Properties > Run in compatibility mode for XP
That works for me |

| I have the same problem and I am already running SC:BW on compatability mode for XP. After I get maybe twenty minutes into a game it freezes and I have to manually shut down to fix it. Any help would be appreciated. |
