As you have surely seen by now (right?) we are running a bunch of SC2 Beta Key contests! Not least amongst those a cake contest, in the spirit of Uncontrollable's before us (all SC themed entries from said contest are eligible to enter this contest btw).
Now, having everyone's awesome cakes waste away in the inbox of the contest account is no fun, so share your creations!
As cakes are posted I (and other staff) will be updating the thread with pictures.
Happy baking =]
It will probably take a while before the first cakes start rolling in, but might as well have this posted.
Update: Pape has made a video compilation of all the cakes:

Background story: I was just as excited as the next savior fan when he made his 2009 declaration, so when the cake contest got announced, I knew that that was the cake I had to make :D I decided to make the backdrop of the cake the map Hitchhiker ( http://www.teamliquid.net/tlpd/images/maps/122_Hitchhiker.jpg ), because that was the map where savior won game 4 of the OSL against NaDa, one of his most famous victories. savior himself is standing in the top-left corner, the same location that he spawned in that game, and the source picture I used for the bonjwa pose was http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/monsuey/saviorwall5copy.jpg. His two most famous units, control- and awesomeness- wise, are his mutalisks and defilers, so I put them on the cake too, using source pictures from http://www.gosugamers.net/starcraft/images/features/mutalisk.jpg and https://cghub.com/files/Image/18381/image.jpg respectively. His name and declaration are also written across the base of the cake. Also, the cake itself is a chocolate torte.
It turned out a bit more "chibi" than I intended but enjoy!
Buttercream icing, using one of the most unhealthy and disgusting recipes I've ever found, but one that producers shinier icing than most (I wanted it for the minerals). I uh... made way too much. http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss280/Aranoi/SCCake/06.jpg

(Becous i haven't found blue candies.) In this way everything made to be eatable on my cake. It took me nearly 2 days to make it, but it was worth the time :D

For reference, the cake was dark chocolate cake, and the blue fondant and brown creep were marshmallow. The brown fondant on the CC and the Infested Terran is actual fondant made with cocoa powder, chocolate, and lots of powdered sugar.

Especially since this is my very time decorating a cake, so a lot of things didn't go at all according to plan. However, I promised that I would at least enter and try, so here is my attempt at a Starcraft cake. To make it look more like a base, I put minerals, probes and even a vulture harassing the workers next to the nexus.
Finished, with minerals, probes (the tiny yellow three-pronged shapes with blue dots in between the nexus and minerals) and even a vulture harassing (the dark-blue shape with the white stripe just above the probes) on the left.
This is my attempt at a hatchery... I figured frosting would give the cake a more organic feel. Everything is eatable. Even the purple tubes which I made using almond paste and food coloring. I hope you like it.

Still missing the details though.
-food coloring -cake base, covered with chocolate -2nd cake base for buildings -marmelade to 'glue' buildings (they taste and look best imho ) -frosting for the gras -icing for the pylon and minerals (both self made) -marcipan for all the units -tin foil for the power generator -fishing line to attach air units to grill
Have you guessed it? Let me give you another hint, these are the players:
I baked my own Choux Pastry and filled them with fresh whipped cream to make something similar to huge Profiteroles/Cream Buns. The legs were made using chocolate fingers coated in marzipan to give it extra detail and texture. The buns were wrapped individually with marzipan before I covered them all with green icing sugar. Then once it had set, I did the black detail with a piping bag. Finally, I sculpted the marzipan horns and teeth. The work was done by myself and my girlfriend! Hope you guys enjoy it!

But sadly the flame in the pictures looks crappy but IRL it looks sick. Oh well.
Took me a little over 3 evenings to complete (total 14-18 hours I think). EVERYTHING is edible aside from the toothpicks to make the probes 'float' (and teh candles lol). Also hard to see in the images is the minirals and gas being returned by some of the probes...check it outttttt.
I had a blast making it, and I wish everyone in the contest luck... even if I dont win a key this has still been a fun 3 days, and these cakes rock!!!

The crepe cake is made of crepes with sugar soaked oatmeal cookies and vanilla cream between the layers. The ling body and the cake cover is made of self made marzipan with food coloring. Some colors aren't exactly great because it was hard to make the right color and impossible to get a dark brown so my ling is grayish! To top it off I have a EXPLODING :D green jello on the baneling which will explode on human contact. In the end I am exhausted after 3 days of hard work and preparations and I hope you all like the piece.
This is my entry, a Zerg Mutalisk cake. It's made of gateau filled with hazelnut pudding, covered with marzipan and with the addition of some cherry. It's eyes are made of gum bears. The wings are connected to the body with thin wooden rods. I started making it with big ambitions, but I realized that making of a cake can be quite time consuming. I've planned more detailed body, much more detailed wings, and primarily a bit darker, and more accurate color, but tiredness and the food paint's failure to properly color the marzipan led me to this solution:

I also used black licorice for the nerve tendrils that come out of the sides and back of a Templar's head. On June 13 2009 23:23 Vedic wrote: Alright, our cake is complete.
We were sure we'd at least take top 3 with our Vulture cake, until some other cakes started rolling in. We began work on a second one that was a baneling. Much like Pape, we thought of using Jello, but we couldn't find a way to make all the detailed and crazy little blobs that would stay. We found a recipe to use Jello mix to make solid gummy, which ended up working VERY well, but the base of the baneling was frosting/fondant (gummy apparently like melts icing) which ended up being a horrible failure for any sort of three dimensional model. We ended up scrapping it and brainstorming something else.
At that point, Vince came out with his cake and he mentioned that he used marzipan. My wife was very intrigued by this, and we bought some so she could test it out. She's an art major, and is used to modeling clay, so we were pleasantly surprised when it held shapes very well. She's done some amazing things in clay, so I went looking for the most detailed SC/SC2 picture I could find. We didn't want to make it solid marzipan, so we have the main centerpiece as the marzipan model, but we still added a ton of detail with the actual cake itself so it didn't feel cheap.
So, I present my lovely wife's second (and last) entry into the competition, the Terran Marine Cake: http://notvedic.googlepages.com/cake2 - You want a piece of me, boy?
Don't ask how much we spent on this - we ended up having to get way more than is even in the prep picture. =P

Here some more shots and construction pics: the reaver was made out of a kind of cookies (a recipe from our grandparents), and covered with fondant, the cake is a biskuit cake, the drones and the cake covering are marzipan, the mineral patches are fondant and icing. the only thing not edible is the TL-flag

After lurking in the forums for the better part of this year, the SC2 Beta contest literally forced me to register to give it a shot!
So since I am not the greatest baker in the world and we have seen many many really great pies in this contest, I (we that is,a friend and me) decided to make a PASTA-MARINE!!
Yes thats right, we made a SpaceMarine consisting 100% out of pasta! We didnt use any glue or the like (although we first considered it, as you might see from some materials, but in the end didnt need to!!), but relied solely on the stickability of wet pasta (the starch that is). To get the noodles in the right form, we had to bend them into the position we want without breaking or making them too wet, which would just cause them to fall apart. We then used some food colouring for the finishing touch!
I see that there is some intense competition, hopefully these can compete with the awesome cakes that you guys have already submitted!
On June 15 2009 15:57 Kalectotite wrote: A couple of people have mentioned that the cakes I submitted don't seem like cakes, so here are a couple more pictures- unfortunately we did not take any making-of pictures, but we figured that the next best thing would be pictures with slices taken out.
The cake itself is a chocolate cake. Trust me, it’s delicious. By now, all the leftovers are gone. Baking makes hungry. ^^ Kerrigan consists of marshmallow fondant. The green and the purple colour is usual food colouring. For the brown parts we had to use a special mixture of red and green food colouring, cocoa powder and powdered sugar. For the two upstanding blades we had to use spaghettis to hold them up.
And now I’m off to look around in the forums, since I hope to spend some more time here. Getting a beta key from a site after all commits one to contribute footage and content.

Originally I was going to make a Siege tank being torn to pieces by a hydra made of marzipan (the clay of the baking world) I needed to use my parents oven to bake the 5 sheets of brownie I was using to construct the base of the cake but an unfortunate event would see a different fierce monster tear the siege tank apart, my parents’ dog.
I lieu of a thoroughly disgusting pile of brownies and icing being eaten by the Hydra I’ve chosen to just enter my painstakingly carved Hydralisk, on a single sheet of brownie that I had planned on using as the turret for my tank.
I’m really impressed with the caliber and quantity of cake people where willing to field, best of luck to the lot of you and I certainly hope we all paid attention to the TL forum rules and had a lot of fun.
Perhaps its immature of me but I have omitted a ton of the basic construction stuff but they all seemed to look like wang if you lot want I can post some of my under construction pictures.

In the spirit of Starcraft 2, I created a Zerg vs. Terran battle scene using only starcraft 2 units or starcraft 2 styles of original units. These units include a Nydus Worm, Infestor, Infested terran eggs, 3 lurkers (2 are partially burrowed), and 3 banelings, one which is rolling. On the terran side, we have the new powerful Planetary Fortress, a bunker, a Crucio Siege Tank, and MULES harvesting the new Yellow Minerals!!
This cake was made with 2 pounds of homemade marzipan, chocolate cake, lots of food coloring, some pineapple life savers (jolly ranchers don't come in yellow?!? :[ ) and three days of time. Hope you guys enjoy looking at it as much as i will enjoy eating it! YUM!
The figures are made out of fondant. The armor, kerrigans wings, and warp blade are made out of airheads, and the jewels on Zeratul are Dumb Dumb suckers. Kerrigan's hair is black licorice. The cake is just a plain vanilla cake. The lettering is also done in fondant, made larger than the original portrait because it was not easy to cut such small letters -_-

As i suck at baking (so no way in hell i will attempt this, as ive only made one really really good cake ever) would It be possible to help you guys judge?
More for other peoples sake.
I know cakes can take well, infuriating long time to do, and I know if I was doing this, I would most likely opt to record the process via some form of camcorder or webcam or the like, as well, its more useful than pictures to me.
Could contestents opt for this route, and send in snippits of video of states to show what they were doing? or do you guys not want video?

I look so bad in this picture...working for 6 hours on a cake can really make one look terrible xD
I don't have any pictures showing me with a sign saying "Hello TL!" or what-not and I read that we have to have one to prove the cakes authenticity. There's no way I can get a picture of me and the cake considering I made it so long ago, and in the previous thread we didn't have to provide the sign ect.
Can I still enter the contest? :x

It was said that any cakes in the Tl-bake off(cough what happened ?cough) could be used here I personally don't see anything wrong with the inclusion of your cake.
You could do a picture of just yourself with TL.net-sign - as long you look pretty much the same as in the cake-picture, that ought to convince pretty much anyone.
