Does anyone else play these maps? If not, then I recommend you all at least try it. It is probably one of the more interesting types of maps.
You basically build buildings to spawn units every wave (each wave is assigned to a different member of your team). For example, a Barracks will get you 5-6 Marines each wave that is assigned to you.
The goal of the game is to destroy the other team's base.
Here are the 3 most popular versions of the map, that I know of..
Desert Strike (normal) Download: http://vgcache.com/maps/81 This is the original version of the map.
Desert Strike 2 Download: http://vgcache.com/maps/82 In this version one player on your team gets to control the units that are spawned.
Desert Strike Half Download: http://vgcache.com/maps/83 All buildings have their costs cut in half. This means the game goes by at a faster pace.
These maps are actually quite fun and a nice change from seeing everyone always playing the usual team oriented maps like Spawn Defense and Income Defense. No one even plays Build Tug-O-War anymore sadly.

Its definitely a good break from meleeing. I would suggest the normal version. No unit control, just higher level unit composition control. Its cool!
|
Definitely a good map especially if you are inactive and just play from time to time.
|
The normal version takes forever sometimes. I've been in games that lasted an hour.
|
I remember playing the first version over and over and over one week years ago and never beating it. Then a few months back I played it and won like 1st or 2nd try lol. I guess it also helps a lot when you have a competant team and at least 1 guy who knows how to beat the 'trick' levels.
I've always thought of it as a reverse defense map and wished there were more like it.

It's all about that nuclear launch detected. The Nydus shit is tight too

since there weren't any other threads on this game, i thought maybe i'd bump this one.
there are so many versions of this game, but the flow of the game is generally the same. what are the best team combos for 2v2 and 3v3? i feel that every team needs a zerg, but having 2 zergs totally sucks.
oh, and i hate the old version because there isn't enough room and the tanks/long range units just destroy the buildings on the side. queen half is the best, although the AI isn't. which version is the most balanced?
|
i dont think any of the queen version are good.
i think the best version is ultimate 1.1.
all the ai in queen is pretty bad even more so the detection. if your protoss in ds u can go dt and they wont die for very long time. because the ai doesnt stop unless its attacked.
also normaly the team with more protoss normaly wins if the game last to the endgame. protoss mc is to powerful when the end game is always air vs air.
this ums was fun when it first came out but its all figured out by now. no real way to fix it without super good ai and no specails.

I know this is an old thread but I felt like bumping it because I cant find any other Desert Strike topics and this has some nice posts too. I think the newest ( and best in my opinion) version is Desert Strike Night Fixed 2.01. The ai is really good and the map is a tribute to SC2. I consider myself to be a pro at Desert Strike and have beaten and played with many other pros that have taught me very useful skills. Please link to any Desert Strike sites you know of or any places at all where people can get advice for desert strike. Also feel free to give your own advice or ask for help with the game here or post replays for others to see.
If you want to play me msg me @ l)arK_3FFA@UsEast or 3FFA@UsEast. I am on a lot of the time and am willing to help anyone with the game. The game is really fun and I've had games where you end up with 2 players nuking each other at the exact same time and end up with a field with only 1-2 units on it max and lots of lol's. Even once had a 3v1(me) and won very easily(the +25% income bonuses really help a lot)
The Best strategy I've come up with for this map(assuming u pick double resource income which 75+% of the players do) is to have PZT or PPZ(not yet sure which is better) on your team and to have the protoss get 3 gas right away and then mass like crazy and the general known strategy is to go mass core with 1-2 gates into observer(Observers and Void Rays and if they are at your Resource Silo you get reavers for a really nice push unless they are starting to mass air, but even then they are still useful)/templar tech(DTs).
Now you translate into a mass Star Gate/some Fleet Beacons for upgrades and Carriers to lag the valkyries(if there are any, if not just to distract the enemies air units and make a good amount of units practically useless). The Carriers do lag the game a bit but they are so useful most people don't care and if they do you can just say "too bad" and continue the game(never really had much of a problem with this after that and the 1 time I did start killing fleet beacons to stop lag I lost like 5 minutes later)
I only know for sure how to play with protoss but I don't know the main stream strategy for Zerg and Terran can do so many different things and there is so many different styles that I don't think I can really do a guide for them even though I've played them many times.
When your army starts pushing hard you and your whole team should gas aggressively to take full advantage of your push. Just before the Silo dies you should all place 1 last gas and wait out the time knowing your opponents are also waiting and are far behind.
Special @ about 16 seconds on the timer or below it so that you can both 1) use the special on the next wave as well as whats left of the current one and 2) Counter any enemy special being used.
Also, NEVER BOOM AT THE SILO The silo is a boom itself and if you boom at the silo you'll basically be wasting a boom and most armies that have only gotten to that point aren't big enough to deserve a boom yet anyways and you can almost always counter.
I hope you play Desert Strike if you don't already and if you stopped get back to playing it! Its really fun and is one of the best UMS games I've found on SC:BW.
