To ensure this thread won't be closed, you must adhere to several a number of simple rules;
Please use spoilers when quoting a post with pictures and/or videos.
When posting large quantities of media (pictures or videos), please begin spoilering after the first piece. Grouping related videos in the same spoilers & labeling is recommended.
No reposting of old material unless justified
Posting any material with little or no relevent discussion accompanying it
No passion-induced flaming of each other because 'x said y sucked' etc.
Keep the expression hate of music individuals/groups to a minimal level
No 'pagetopping' in any form whatsoever, as it constitutes spam equal to posts similar to 'first'.
No vulgar fan fics or wet dream stories. It is creepy, weird, and it dehumanizes the people who you are here to celebrate/discuss.
Normal posting standards that you find throughout the rest of the site still apply and will be enforced more strictly from here forward (2012/03/11)
Due to the poor nature of this thread in the past, temporary two-day bans will occur more than often if people slip up.
Edit: ironic, isn't it (not this particular video though, just the song).
Same for me, loved the song, found out I shared the same bday with Taeyeon and shes been my #1 ever since. (Fany #2~) Shortly after I ventured into more kpop, discovered Big Bang, started watching variety shows (WGM, Family Outing) and since then cut out all my English music for Korean, haha. Pretty much SNSD/Big Bang made me fall for Korean music.

Well according to the Korean definition of an "idol group", groups like Happiness, BRIGHT, and AAA would be considered idols as well, and I'm sure those three groups have as just as much talent and performing capability if not more than what's out there in K-Pop. At least in J-Pop there's a relatively much clearer definition of what an idol group is and isn't. It's bad when within the industry Davichi and 2AM are considered idols. The day IU was considered an idol... ugh.
At the very least, it's not inconceivable if someone like Ken Hirai, Miliyah Kato, flumpool, or Yui get #1 on the weekly Oricon chart. Hell, there's even room in the Japanese market that an unappreciated idol group like SuperNova can achieve great success.
Btw, this is what started K-Pop for me, still can't believe Koreans are still using their national pride to still condemn him because of US citizenship, whatever the timing of getting it was. Pretty disgraceful considering someone like Kang Ho Dong can come back in like 5 yrs maybe and act like his tax evasion bullshit didn't happen at all. No one in K-Pop past or present could match YSJ's overall performing skills.
I'm actually curious as to what your definition of an Idol is. Because any way I look at it, IU would be an idol in my book.

If it's talked about more than once in this thread, it's an idol

I felt Mach sounded alright with the transition to jpop until I heard Woori rapping in Japanese towards the end. Totally ruined it for me. T_T
Bro, Woori's raps suck in Japanese just as much as they suck in Korean. [Read: they're really bad]

I think by the traditional Japanese definition of it, as Japan defined East Asian pop culture for so long, an idol is a *performer*, scouted through a systematic audition with many stages, chosen for appearance as well as talent, and is *trained* by the same company that produces and promotes the idol's music.

Only thing I would add is generally young age (there are exceptions) and primarily geared towards a young, teenage market.

Hmm, so what about IU doesn't fit this criteria?
