I've made this topic to see how many other people have known others killed or injured in a serious car accident. Two of my good friends died friday night. The snow was pretty bad and they were speeding about 95-105 on the freeway and lost control, making them slide into opposing trafic. He slammed into a truck and died shortly after at the scene. Saturday, people were in and out of the houses of the two victims all day, and I went to pay some respects and see how the family is doing, along with the older brother who I know well. I also had to deal with the death of another two friends two years earlier in a similar accident dealing with rain. All four kids were on the tennis team along with me, so it hits pretty hard and is very sad. All were so young and not ready to die, so it's affecting me pretty badly. Anyone else have similar incidences?

I can't say I have so my empathy toward you may feel very weak, but I'm sorry.... but excuse me for asking, what happened to the car they slammed into? I'd think that person would be dead too unless it was a huge semi-truck.

Vi)Chris you might think I sound so harsh and cold but I think they deserved to die. Who the hell speeds 95-105 on the freeway while snowing? Not even while snowing its dangerous. Read MadduX's post and see how innocent people die people of reckless people like who drive highspeed during bad weather or driving while intoxication. Then again the girl was a stupid bitch for letting him drive her at that speed while he was drunk.

In all seriousness, I know a few people who have died (not first hand, but through others). Most of the cases were due to black ice (ice on the ground that is not visible without close inspection). One of them was to drunk driving.

Reading Maddux is good for laughing at an imbecile, not for advice on life. Yes it was the fault of them for speeding when the driving conditions were so shitty. It was easily preventable and really shouldn't have happened. The person in the other car was treated for minor injuries, and another car was somewhat in the accident, and again only minor injuries. The circumstances don't matter too greatly though, someone died.

Their were at least 4 that died in my graduating class from car accidents of around 250. I really think that we need to raise the driving age, as much as most kids would hate it, so that so many people will have a chance to live before they die. Then again, there are a ton of bad drivers out there and they aren't all teenagers. I think people just need to realize they need to be more serious about how they drive.

I think most people chronically speed, at least that I know. Mostly all people speed at least some of the time. I think if death was a fair punishment then alot of people would be dead. The only person I know who doesn't ever speed is my mom 8-/

i had a very bad car accident in june 2002 i was going around 120 km on a 50 km street; a lady from opposing side turned left and cut me, i braked hit her at around 80km jumped the sidewalk hit a post. LUCKILY, the post was new and not attached completely to the ground, it only fell down next to the car and reduced the impact, everybody was ok, which i thank the lord for. It is however a very big shock and got me to the conclusion that no matter how good of a driver you think you are, there are always improbable stuff that can happen, so speeding sux.

Here in montreal, the age for driving is 16, where you start with somebody that has 2 years of experience and you can get your real permit at 16 and 8 months. I think it is waaaaaay to early because at that age your reckless and somewhat immature. 18 would be a great age.

I feel very sorry for you friends, it is a horrible way to die, i hope for them they been good and heaven exists

some dude here speeded with 100mps over a small road with houses on both sides in the middle of the night, he lost control and he hit one of the houses. He died and he killed a baby that was sleeping in his crib in the living room. I think some ppl should take more responsibility in trafic and think about the consequences they could have.

Last march my cousin lost control of his car and hit a tree, he died almost immediately after the crash. He was infact speeding, but still, he was way too young to die (19).

From that moment I understood the difference between knowing someone could die and not having so much trouble with it (my grandfather a couple of years ago), and the unexpected death of someone who should've had their whole life in front of them. Believe me, you'll experience more intense emotions than than you ever thought possible..

I'm sorry to hear that Chris.

My mom was in a car accident about 8 years ago where some lady was balancing her checkbook while waiting at a stoplight. My mom was turning left on the side of oncoming traffic and had the right-of-way, and this lady just wasn't paying attention and I think she asked her small child in the passenger seat if the light was green (who then said it was). Anyway my mom's Oldsmobile Toronado, given to her by her former boss, was totalled. I was in 8th grade at the time and the office called me up to tell me, and I was shocked. Thankfully my mom wasn't hurt. If she was in a smaller car (those Oldsmobiles are huge) things may have turned out differently.

There were three other incidents where people I knew got into accidents - my best friend had a similar situation as my mom forcing him to swerve into a ditch with a car he had just purchased 24 hours prior, and my ex-fiancee got into two small skiffs in her school parking lot. Thankfully they were not hurt either.

The latter instances weren't so worrying for me because the first time I heard about them was from the people affected. When my mom got in that accident and the school secretary told me what happened, I just froze. So while things turned out better than they could have, for those brief moments (before I heard she was ok) I was in your position. It may not be much but that's the best I can relate.

Again, sorry to hear about this.

Ya..u don't really realize things until u get into a car accident...i consider myself a good driver..i speed alot on the highways but i used to always tell my self unlike other fuckers who drive insanely fast, i was capable of doint it cuz i kne what i was doing...well after my 1st accident i realized its not that ur good, its that theres always a stupid irresponsible driver sharing the road with u, keep that in mind. for example at a red lite i used to neva look when it turned grren for me, i just went cuz it was green and according to the law i can go when its grren...well whut if some drunk stupid mothafucker is running a red?? oh well...it mite sound like the things im sayin are no brainers but trust me we all do it..i've been in 3 accidents and none were my fault but i could have avoided them all if i was careful enuff and acknoledged the fact that not everyone is a good driver like i am..not to sound cocky just makin a point

well just about 6 months ago (6-23) my best friend and his cousin who is also a friend of mine died in a car accident, not because they were speeding, but because a dumbfuck cut them off on the freeway. my friend lost control and they swerved onto those thick freeway exit posts.

though it may not mean much, chris, send my regards to the grieving family. hope you guys are able cope with your tragic loss.

My condolences Chris. I believe not only should the driving test requirements be increased, but fines for drunk driving, reckless driving and speeding should be increased tenfold. No appointment or deadline is worth someone's life. I also think you should be forced to give up your keys when you go to a bar. These are not end-all solutions, but they would certainly help.

Any one who is willing to speed on ice is willing to die. They were ready for it, so they took the risk. No one in their right mind would put their life in danger like that. They probably didn't even consider other motorists or what danger they put everyone around them in.

There was a guy whom i met at some party in malmö (sweden). Well he was drunk, had just sniffed cocaine. Took his parents bmw. drove on the freeway at around 220 km/h - he got caught under a truck, adn died that very moment.

i used take my moms car out for a drive. a friend and myself thought that we were excellent drivers, well we eventually crashed. and let me tell you its until something happens that you realise how stupid it really is. i mean i was drive at around ~150 km/h om a 50 km/h road. imagine if i would have hit a child or something. i mean i dont even have a drivers licence and still i find that "hey this driving buissnes isn't that hard". It was my friend that crashed my mothers car, she was in france for 3 weeks.

I played tennis for L'anse Creuse High School North, I decided not to play in college because we had no official teams. I didn't really give much information in my post and I seen some similarities that kinda surprised me. First, they were driving back from an away basketball game, which I seen someone else say. The kids were also both sixteen, the kid only had his license for a month. Some kids never really have a chance to practice driving in snowy or icy conditions, so a little bit of immaturity and bad luck can result in death pretty easily. The other accident my friend was going for a pass during a thunderstorm, which should be pretty obvious not to do. Then when shifting back into the lane the car swerved and the truck they were passing smacked into the side of them. Seems some kids don't get the practice they need or are just too immature to drive at sixteen. I know the two were best friends in both instances and a little bit of speeding sounded "cool" to do, and that resulted in their deaths.

I think if you live in areas with snow, drivers education should require a certain amount of winter driving hours. The classes should also cover the dangers of winter driving, I didn't learn anything about it now that I think back.

I know how to drive on snow and ice and I live in Alabama.
105 on a freeway is dangerous enough, in ideal conditions. In the snow its just absurd. What about the other cars on the freeway that were probably going 40-50, was he weaving in and out of them?

http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=10698098&BRD=988&PAG=461&dept_id=141265&rfi=6

Speed limit is 70, and in Michigan everyone speeds like all the time. The norm in the fast lane is about 80-90. So going 100 is not too hard and doesn't require much weaving in the furthest 2 lanes.

i was reading through this and i noticed a few posters that were talking like this.

ppl who are not noticing the irony.
i used to speed a lot and then i realized its not that ur good, its that theres always a stupid irresponsible driver sharing the road with u

As for my crash example, i had been driving cars for a fair while, before i got my motorbike. I did my first long trip (about 4 hours ride) and i was getting really tired (bikes tire you out more then lazing about in a car!) it had been raining for about 2 hours of my trip it was at night i was basically by myself on the road going through the city getting close to my destination, came up to a bend in the road and the traffic lights changed colour i should have just gone through as i would have made it safely but combination of tiredness and inexperience and i just slammed on the brakes and lost control almost immediately as the bike slipped out from under me on the wet surface.

I ended up with damaging the gear changer and handlebars along the left side of my bike along with a few major scrapes, fortunately i got away with just scrapes along my palms that stung like hell and some severe scraps on my helmet. Fortunately i was alone on the road and didn't get close to hurting anyone else, group of girls in the car that pulled up a little while behind me were amazed i just got up and said i was fine and walked over to my bike.

Since then i absolutely hate riding in the rain and i go around corners so slow. Before then i'd never had any long distance riding experience or in the rain.

I'd never think of giving up my bike, i love riding but i'm just much more careful now then i used to be.
My hope is one day stupid people will feel the same pain when they talk, as the pain the rest of us feel when we hear them.

I dont mind people who speed on motorbikes as much as people who speed normally. (I mean, you drive at 100 mph into another car when you're on a motorcycle.. who's gonna get most fucked up? ) now I do have to admit that when im sitting in a car and someone decides to speed, I really won't give a shit unless it's like, twice the speed limit or something, because it IS pretty fun, but I dont expect people to feel sorry for me if I die while sitting in one of those cars either.

and I dont speed personally, not having a license and all that.

Ppl who speed on bikes are even more stupid as the only airbag protection you have in a crash is the air between you and the ground

Here whenever the weather is bad, people slow down to 40-50 on the interstate, not speed up to 100. Could be different in Michigan, though.

And Blackjack, my signature is a quotation, so I left it as is; and when I tried to put quotations in the sig it turned out as slashes; so I took them out.

if you drive 30-40 over the speed limit IN SNOW i don't know how u can talk about how sad it was without talking about how stupid it was. would u be equally mornful if u talked about someone who tried to juggle chainsaws or something or smoke crack every day for 2 weeks straight? they would all be equally ridiculous things to say

u shouldnt even call it an accident. u should call it an accident if they DIDN'T all die.

yup yup. 16 seems awfully young to drive a car. You cant drink or vote, but you can drive a car? Thats just ridiculous.

There was an accident next to where I live a little bit ago. It really didn't affect me, but I thought it was worth mentioning...

Some guy was speeding something like 30 miles over the limit, lost control, and killed 2 small children playing in their front yard.

When interviewed by police, he defended himself by saying "But I haven't taken any drugs in hours!"

-_-;

My friend's dad was riding a motorcycle, and he lost control of it. He went head first into a tree, and died instantly.

in high school for australia theres junior highschool with is 8-10 and senior high school which is 11-12 so first year of senior would be year 11. so it makes perfect sense to me.

They shouldn't change the driving age. In many places in the US (Like where I am in Detroit) have really poor transportation. 16 is too old for parents to drive you to school and work and anywhere else you want to go.

Some people are good drivers and some people aren't. There might be a age contribution to school but that would be before 16 unless you are mentally stunted. Just because of some stupid kids, don't ruin it for all the others. Would you do the same when some middle-aged person fucks up?

Hm Chris, I live in Michigan too. Saw a bit of the story on the news, but thought it was a coincidence. :/

Driving FAST inst the problem the problem is be AWARE of the Current conditions , one thing is going 200kmh++ on a HighWay with almost no traffic and good weather, other is reckless drive with bad conditions ,traffic ,weather , city , dangerous roads , etc ,etc ...
Go Fast when you Can , not when you want.
