So I took some advice and decided to keep track of my progress through youtube video uploads. I'll see how that goes. I'm pretty much learning as I go, and hopefully I learn a ton more stuff on the way.
This is the first video, and just check my youtube channel for more of these.

Soo I've been working on a game with UDK. It's partly for a class, but it's more of a personal project at this point. My class required me to make a 3 minute trailer of the game and I thought I'd share it with you guys. I could use some views and likes if possible It's very unfinished. I'm currently very interested in working further on this game.
Looks nice. Could you explain the concept? I imagine that it isn't only a shooter where you wait around some buildings while undead(?) come to attack you?

Right
Soo the idea, is to make it an open world survival sim, with a horror theme. I'd also like to make it multiplayer. Basically, you need to eat and drink or you die. So you have to search the world for food and drinks. There are monsters outside though so watch out(More monsters planned). It's also extremely dark so using your flashlight is a must.(planned is allowing you to equip both your flashlight and your weapon at the expense of much lower accuracy.) There is a day and night cycle, so during the day, it's a lot safer and you can see what's coming. That's when you should be looking and planning for how to survive the night, and it gives a good chance to find food and weapons. Ammo is scarce, and running away should be the main option. When you reload, you lose the entire clip in the gun. Melee weapons are also planned.
By the time this is done, I would like you to be able to pick a spawn location from a few choices. You then spawn in that part of the world and try and survive. There might be a small behind the scenes story that won't affect gameplay at all, maybe explaining what's going on somehow, but it will be very fragmented throughout the world and very little information. Probably through some books and logs. Food and ammo and weapons will not respawn, so the longer you survive the harder it will get. Though I would like to include ways of bringing food back to the world. There will definitely be fruit and vegetables that grow, as well as wild animals for meat.
It's an ambitious project, especially since I'm just doing it on my own and I barely learned UDK 2 months ago, but I have the summer to see what happens and maybe have a few of my friends help me out with it.
I like the contrast between the first minute where the character eats cereal, and the rest of the trailer where he is chased by monsters (night time looks scary, good job!).
Also, when you switch on the lights in the rooms, does it attract more monsters?

Thank you!
And no it doesn't YET. But I would like it to. In the future I think I'll have them or some other monsters do this.
ProjectX was just a temporary name until I can think of one I like. I just haven't thought of one yet. I'll probably end up with another name but keep something called ProjectX in the game, as well as keep PX as some sort of in-game company that makes cereal and cookies and everything else in the game lol.(My umbrella corp).
thought it was really cool until the character picked up a pistol. It seemed like a nice concept with a horror game where you are practically unable to fight, just flee

I get what you mean. The result of this game will be more about running away than fighting. Ammo will be very scarce, and there will be deadlier monsters. Unfortunately the video was due, and I had just finished making the hunger and thirst mechanic. I get where you're coming from and while I do intend this game to allow you to fight back, it will be much less frequent and harder if you intend on surviving for very long. This won't be a shoot em all game.

Cool! I hope you'll keep track of your progress in future blogs!

Yeah, I actually plan on posting videos of my progress as I go along. I'll see how that works out. Going to start uploading one before I go to bed. Thanks for your interest!
