First off, let me just start by saying I do not have any experience running a stream - on any level - so I am not 100% sure if this is actually viable. But here it goes...
We have large-scale leagues such as DreamHack, MLG and NASL. They produce hours upon hours of content each event weekend, as well as between events with online qualifiers and various shows.
Would it not be a good idea to have a 24/7 DreamHack or 24/7 MLG Stream going?
The Setup A single league, in this example I will use DreamHack, would setup a live stream that would run 24/7.
The stream would act much like a cable TV Channel. The channel would be online 24/7 and there would be an active schedule detailing what would air in each given timeslot.
The Content NOTE: Content would not be restricted to SC2. You would also have LoL, Dota2, CS:GO • LIVE events • Online Qualifiers • Re-Streamed competitions • Original eSports programming • Documentaries • Historical Tournament Content (footage/interviews/highlights) • Frag videos or highlight reels • Tutorials • Game nights • And the list goes on...
The channel would re-stream events, shows, interviews and other content they produce. They could air eSports documentaries (provided they make arrangements and have the rights, etc.) as well as develop additional eSports shows.
NOTE: Original airtime of shows would be LIVE broadcasted on the channel - however, other content would obviously be pre-recorded or re-runs of previous episodes/tournaments/content.
NOTE TWO: The Stream Channel would be run by an entity such as MLG or DreamHack - it is NOT a brand new channel that simply streams a curated list of content.
Opportunities 1. Work with teams to air their video content or their shows. 2. Work with amateurs to build new shows and develop them into professionals/personalities. 3. Work with advertisers to sell commercial spots or branding for shows. 4. Work with smaller, lesser known events in other regions to broadcast their tournaments.
Poll: Would you tune in regularly to a 24/7 eSports Stream Channel?Yes (617) 74% No (112) 13% I would only tune in for the events I do now (109) 13% 838 total votes Your vote: Would you tune in regularly to a 24/7 eSports Stream Channel? (Vote): Yes (Vote): No (Vote): I would only tune in for the events I do now
And for those of you who answered yes...
Poll: Would you pay a subscription fee to tune into the channel? No, only free (510) 70% Yes, but only $5 (122) 17% Yes, up to $10 (59) 8% Yes, up to $20 (27) 4% Yes, but Id prefer a show by show basis akin to a micro-transaction setup (11) 2% 729 total votes Your vote: Would you pay a subscription fee to tune into the channel? I can't pay, but it would be interesting. The problem is that organizing the content and having a consistent flow of sc2 content is going to be much harder than it sounds
|
great idea, but I think the work involved to keep meaningful content that people would want to watch would be way too high to justify it at this point.
Starcraft already has an unofficial 24/7 outlet and it's user streams, even a dedicated group of individuals who would take on competing against this would be hard pressed to snag enough viewers to make it worthwhile at least in the early going.
|
This would be actually super interesting however, with all that has happened with a seasoned company in MLG i don't really know how well you could pull it off. As for paying I would probably prefer watching for free with just 480p instead of 720. 720 just seems too good for free.
|
Mate GSL already sucks at least 3 hrs of my work time every day (yes I watch streams in my office), 24/7 will get my fired....
I vote YYYYYESSSS :D
|
I suppose it would be cool, but that requires a ton of content and money, and likely wouldn't be free.
|
Question is: Is there enough content to make such a thing reliable in time?
|
I think don't think LoL needs any more exposure and can take care of themselves, everything else would be fine.
Quake, DotA, StarCraft, CS? Sure.
|
Anything free makes no sense. So unless you partner up with MLG/NASL/GSL/DH and have their content run 24/7, I don't see this working judging by finances.

Ya, but I can't see myself paying much for a 24/7 show; I rather just contribute to a caster/player that I like watching
|
I assume this is different from the 24/7 stream rerun mlg already does? And ipl did.
|
There is just too much good free content right now for me to be interested in paying.
|
TakeTV already offers content nearly 24/ 7(i think, its always on whenever i look). The average of live shows per week is maybe 3/7 overall. Some weeks even up to 6/7. They fill the rest with reruns. At the moment dreamhack reruns and they still have 400 views at an abysmal time for german viewers. (1am monday) Sometimes they give non featured players the chance to present themselves to a bigger audience and get ad revenue.
So the concept does work and it seems to be profitable. Ad revenue vs elecriticity? I think they calculated it.
But i would guess Step 1: have successful content yourself. Step 2: have a lot of successful content yourself that people would rewatch on a weekly basis. Step 3: think about expanding and maybe get involved with other people that stream content on your channel.

Since we're talking about a 24/7 channel, its tv right? So if it were included in some sort of cable package that would be just great. A lot of shows fit and a lot don't. For example, most of the talk shows we watch already take commercial breaks etc. Switch the feed over for live tourneys just like a hockey game would.
But I don't think we're "there" yet, and by the time we are "there" the TV channel vs Internet stream situation may have changed a lot. I think even the Nielson rating system is being changed to actually value internet streamers more. On top of that, typically the bigger organizations have streams doing reruns all the time (ipl, mlg, esl).
It would be nice to have an aggregate channel for multiple organizations and even multiple games, but at this point I don't know how you'd get them all to agree to work together.
|
I don't think there would be enough content. We can't fill a 24 hour slot now with the big names, and we're in the middle of consolidation on SC2 which is cutting back even more on content.
|
Would you tune in? Yes - 57; Would you pay? No - 62
Haha awesome.
|
Seems like too much work and not enough content for what it is. I like the way it is now, many different streams cater to local and global level of play, at different times, with different casters etc. 24/7 would end up being 75% filler I think.
|
Yeah I'd totally watch this.
|
A "TV-like" channel would be a step down to what we have now. Currently, we tune in to whatever we want, whenever we want. VODs are all up on Twitch or Youtube, tournament schedules can be checked in Liquipedia and watched on Twitch and documentaries, frag videos, etc can be found on Youtube.
|
Quake has something like this, a bot just runs around observing 1v1 duels and perpetually broadcasts. Not sure how youd set this up efficiently in sc2 though
