I play on Iccup and I barely can play and pretty much is losing hope to get into it because I can't figure out how to learn this with players of my level. Anyone interested in playing sometime? my iccup name is toast012 You gotta accept you're going to lose. ALOT. You're new and some of the people on iCCup have been playing for 10+ years(possibly) just make yourself macro, learn build orders for whatever race you've chosen to play, try to watch Snipealot often and get a feel for what to do, download replays watch them and study! study your own replays when you lose aswell

Just like in mixed martial arts or any combat sports (wrestling, kickboxing, judo), the successful ones aren't the ones who ended up walking out of the gym after getting thrown to the mat or not being able to land a shot, the successful ones are the ones who stay past late and keep practicing, with the drive to win.

In conclusion: What you experience is something every BW player has gone through. It will erode your self-estem - hell, even your sense of self worth initially - but that is just the way of things, rest assured.

They say losing is the only way to learn, and playing vs players better than you is the best way to go about it, but until you get any kind of basic play down it's really counter-productive to just go out on Iccup to get smashed. The most important thing is to have fun. Try to find players near you own level (which you are already doing here :D), and use resources such as Liquipedia (which is very poorly updated, but still highly useful for someone like you) to learn a build to use (practising one build per match-up is IMO the way to go when you're learning).

When I was new, I picked out a completely random player that looked interesting and studied his replays. I picked a mysterious guy named White-Ra, who ended up being my favorite player ever, and I completely modeled my style of play after his. It was easily the luckiest decision I've ever made. I don't watch Brood War anymore, so I'm not sure who the better foreigners are. I'm not even sure where you can get a lot of high level replays now, but the TLS 1 qualifiers were played a few months ago and I'm sure there's a lot of good replays in there: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=392795 http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=393030 http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=393989 http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=394276 http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=395347 http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=395521 Looking at the brackets and picking the Protoss players that go far and just seeing what they do will help. At least, if you're completely new, it can't hurt. When watching a replay, it's always nice to only have vision turned on for the Protoss player that you're trying to study. That way, you can see how he/she reacts to different builds and moves and what not. Note that the Koreans are always going to be way better for you to study, but I'm not sure where you can get their replays nowadays. Hope this helps!

Learn when to take your probe off minerals to build first pylon and also when for first gateway. Where you build the pylon is important because you want your Gateway to be placed for easy macroing, not clumped messily around the edge of your tech buildings. Friends are important. Don't take criticism personally. When you find some friends to play with, (the D-Ranks Teamleagues can be really helpful and fun for this!) you can practice your one build vs their one build over and over, so you kind of get a feel for the early game. Your brain will wire up so that you don't even have to think "okay so now I rally my gateway to my choke." You get better faster by playing with friends in this way, knowing what they will do, but pretending that you don't. Lastly, begin practicing this map immediately. http://www.mediafire.com/?3ywk1dzrytt8js3 Search for other micro maps too. You can find some on Liquipedia, or google for "protoss trainer" or micro, etc. Hotkeys are important. Most micro isn't important at this point. What you need to learn is: 1. a build order 2. macro 3. proper mindset for how long you should be looking at one part of the screen 4. how to look at the minimap. 5. how to look at the mineral-gas-supply counters toastt fighting! Edit: add me on iccup @Raddmiral, I'm wanting to get back in but I'm out of practice for like a year (again T_T). I don't play much on weekends though.
