This is not Desert Strike HotS, this is (Official) the other one is a completely different (also pretty cool) EU version of the game by Tya that is pretty much a new game entirely.
Hello everyone, I am announcing the new Official HOTS version of Desert Strike. Official meaning that it is overseen and approved by Dredlock, the caretaker of the map for years with multiple tournaments held by him with actual prizes.
I have been working on this map for only a few weeks now and I think it is ready to be played publicly. I am very new to the editor but I am working closely with Dredlock who is the one person who has held the map after the original creator stopped working on it and has made multiple attempts at fixing the problems that plague the old versions.
A little history on the map. >Spoiler< + Show Spoiler +The original was actually a Brood war map created by QueenGambit and was adapted to SC2 by SquarelyCircle. Squarely worked with multiple players (myself included) to polish and balance the game to keep it floating near #3 among the US custom maps.
After many updates and new units, Squarely ceased updating and fell out of contact with the dedicated players. Word had spread that he was playing a different game and Dredlock made contact with him and along with Turtle, gave Squarely a "Turtle Version" which he uploaded under his account before vanishing into the void.
After a while Turtle stopped updating the map as well and this is when the many, MANY spinoffs began popping up. Most of them were flat out copies of Turtle and Dred's work, and others were so different that calling it Desert Strike at all was a bit off.
FIXED Desert Strike was the final official version of Desert Strike with updates and fixes by Ordo. Disagreements between Ordo and Dred caused a separation and now Ordo operates independently with his own versions of the map.
About me >Spoiler< + Show Spoiler +I myself have been playing DS since its conception and have well over 40k games across the different versions as it's pretty much all I play. I have live-streamed tournaments with commentary in the past and intend to do so in the future. The transfer from WoL to HoTS was much more difficult than expected, a lot of the units were simply put, broken badly by the dependency change and needed a complete rework. I am not skilled enough in the editor to attempt to fix pathing issues at this time, Turtle and Ordo are much more knowledgeable about code than I but I am learning.
This version intends to stay true to the balance and play style of the original and was created with the intent of introducing HOTS units into the game, making it balanced and that is it. This map will be updated frequently, multiple times a day if needed until everything is working perfectly, even pathing eventually. For now pathing is the same as it is in .82 (base map I received) and has not been touched.
Please visit DSTourney.com for forums, to leave feedback, read forums and to get information about upcoming tournaments.
Please keep in mind that the map is labeled -Live Beta- for a reason and has been out for less than an hour.
Thank you and hope to see you in game!

As the author of Desert Strike HotS, this confused the hell out of me when I saw the title.

Yeah, unfortunately the other variation is taken by someone else who has really no business doing so (you also have him and his buddies trolling your review page as well). If I put the official in front you would not be able to see the whole name in the list. I have HOTS Desert strike on reserve as well and if confusion continues I will use that instead, what is important is the official tag so that people know, like Income Wars, which one out of the many is from the same people. The whole region merger left us with some conflicts in map names.

Hellsaura? Yeah, he tried to sabotage my "Desert Strike HotS" map early on with reviews that were just slander and promoting his own map.
This is like, my first experience of UMS drama!

And us melee mappers think we have it bad.
I always enjoyed DS but I never realized the fractious story behind the recent versions. Looking forward to trying out hots units, thanks for your efforts guys.

Back before you could "lock" a map when publishing you could find it through the Editor and save it to your machine. The Custom triggers were not in the trigger section but the XML code was still embedded. This is how a few versions were "taken" for lack of a more incriminating and precise word. The others were given to Dred to fix and just never taken down when the guy doing the fixes left or stopped. Blizzard will not take down any map regardless of how broken or "taken" it is, the uploader must do it.
When you spend years on making a custom map, with your own ideas and do all of the work creating your own personal game, and someone just comes along and "takes" it, it is a really home hitting experience. Knowing there is nothing at all you can do about it just makes it worse.

Ready for some DS soapbox drama
Seems everyone wants a piece of DS. Most of the code in all versions is squares. At least from .78-.82 80 percent is squares 20 turtle/dred. We just balanced the game via many many hours of play testing and fixed things that blizzard broke with patches. Then it morphed into DS II (another drama)
Good free help is hard to find. Recently Shaolin and I purchased a shared account so the map would not be abandoned. Word on the street got out, a few days later I was approached by an old buddy who introduced me to Ordo, saying he wanted to help. I explained that we were going to just fix .82 (not make totally new map) and upload in a new shared account. That way if someone leaves another can still modify the map. This set up requires a bit of trust. Shaolin was in middle of move and wanted to work on it when finished. I was content on waiting.
Ordo managed to coax a look at the code out of me. Said he just wanted to look at it and would not do anything.
Within 24 hrs he made a new loader screen and uploaded the map under his account. I was not too happy, this did raise an eyebrow on trust from the get go.
After some diplomatic conversations he agreed to take the map down and use the new shared account, I also gave him full access to the forum as long as I was made aware of changes before (not after) map changes were uploaded.
Many broken promises later he ran off with the 80/20 Square/turtle code and now claims it as his own And somehow thinks I was attempting to steal (the map I gave him) and take credit. Its pretty insane.
Even though i had worked on it since sept 2011 in one form or another I would still give all the credit to Square. Without Squares base I doubt there would be anything close to desert strike out. Even the Korean version used .78 of squares as the base. I think this new found map editing power went to his head. Within a week he self proclaimed himself a "UBER L33T Patchez! "
To me its like finding a book and adding "The End" on the back page and claim you wrote the book.
Like silo fever when people rush in epic, I have seen more than one person get the code of DS and sort of get giddy. Then they usually break map trying to reinvent the wheel. So blame me for yet another version of Desert Strike.
Don't sell yourself short Zalos. You have actually managed to avoid many of the pitfalls for how little you have been working on this version.
Its looking really nice.

Not too sure about how the TL community works with UMS, whether it is active or not but if anyone here does have any input, suggestions or ideas, please use DSTourney Forums. Under General HOTS Discussions > HOTS Anything. Registration is free and IIRC, there is no activation needed.
I would also like to know if there is any way possible to change the name of the map and still retain the ratings and reviews whether I have to call them or can do it myself, or if it is possible at all.
Thanks again.

That Hellsaura guy is really lashing out, he really must be mad that his map is still not played and our maps actually have a spot on the top 3 of Tug maps.
He decided he would openly attack me on our forums, it's pretty funny.
Warning, someone has a potty mouth.
