Both Chalk "Chalk" Zaldivar and Euniel "Staz" Javiñas will not be attending the second phase of the Blizzcon Qualifier this coming weekend in New York City. Despite multiple attempts the visas for these players have been denied and their slots have already been filled by the next two highest ranked players.
According to the ESL standings, dog and Kayce were the highest ranked of players to miss the cut but there is no official confirmation as of yet.

That sucks. A lot. I was really excited to see those 2 and the different way they played. It won't be the same only learning about outside national metas from Stunner.

Visas ruining e-sports, as usual...
|
T__T poor guys. Dog is great though let's hope he gets in.

I'm surprised this story broke before Blizzard or ESL could make an official announcement. I can only assume that, since it's Mineski, they spoke to the players directly.
|
That stinks for those players.
But good luck to Dog. Seems like a nice, chill guy who can also achieve Legend #1.

visas continue to fuck esports in the ass, dont believe me? say hello to viOLet and Jim

Really sad, both because I'm sure it's disheartening and frustrating for those guys to miss out on their shot, and because the more countries that get involved in an esport, the more exciting it is. I have no idea what the Pinoy HS scene is like, and I would have loved a chance to see some of their players take the stage.
Dog is a great player, so at least someone deserving is getting their spot (if that turns out to be the case), but it shouldn't have been like this.

I have to wonder if this has to do with the fact that foreign players had no idea they needed visas for October when most players expected to need them in November.
If this is the case, disqualifying these players is wrong. Allow them to play remotely if they can get their visas in time for Blizzcon would be the right call.

Protohype reports on Reddit that he won a backup tournament that took place right after Phase 1 in case replacements would be needed, 2nd place going to Ant. If this is accurate, those 2 will be the replacements.

US visa is pain in the butt to get on a good day. Getting a business visa (required for tournament as it has a prize pool) for a young person without stable income (most players) is more like crap shoot.
Visa for a typical British student who is already accepted by a US school gets rejected about 20% of the time. It's probably easier for someone to go to Iran or Syria than to US at the moment.

GG. Visas, the kryptonite of eSports.
|
They should let the players play via Online at ESL. This way they can still keep trying for Visas. They should also have the runner ups play in case too.
|
i understand the complications of getting visas because the burden of proof is on the applicant to prove that he will go back to his home country.
i'm guessing that their visas got denied even with the backing of blizzard is because all they're attending is a "qualifier". i think it would've made a difference if it said they were already attending the World Championships.
i think Blizzard should move SEA into the Asian server. it seriously does not make sense putting SEA with the Americas. yes i know most of SEA countries are english speaking but i think that hardly matters in Hearthstone.
|
why not let them play online?
Blizz needs to do a better job of advocating for their players.
