X-COM (sometimes stylized as X-Com) is a science fiction video game franchise featuring the titular fictional elite international organization tasked with countering alien invasions of Earth. The series began with the hit strategy video game UFO: Enemy Unknown created by Mythos Games and MicroProse in 1994. The original line up by MicroProse included six published and at least two cancelled games, as well as two novels. The X-COM series, in particular its original entry, achieved a sizable cult following and has also influenced many other video games; including creation of a number of clones, spiritual successors, and unofficial remakes.
A reboot series entitled XCOM was published by 2K Games, beginning with the strategy video game XCOM: Enemy Unknown, developed by Firaxis Games and released in 2012 to critical and commercial success, with two more games following in 2013. A sequel, XCOM 2, is scheduled for release in 2015.

XCOM2 announced!
“New York, NY – June 1, 2015 – 2K and Firaxis Games today announced that XCOM® 2, the sequel to the Game of the Year* award-winning strategy title XCOM®: Enemy Unknown, is currently in development for Windows-based PC. Developed by Firaxis Games, XCOM 2 transports players 20 years into the future, where humanity lost the war against the alien threat that has established a new world order. XCOM: Enemy unknown, enemy within
Original TL thread: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/games/344833-xcom-enemy-unknown
Enemy within is an expansion to enemy unknown, it adds new toys to fight the aliens with, removes a bunch of bugs and is generally awesome, a great expansion. You do NOT need to play EU before EW, EW is the same as EU + new features.

Named by PC Gamer one of the 15 most brutal mods of all time and in November 2014 was the site's Mod of the Week.
The long war is a MOD for XCOM: Enemy within made by a passionate group of modders. The mod adds a ton of features, rebalances the entire game, and corrects thousands of bugs from the base game. It increases the campaign length and difficulty. Best of all? It’s completely free and in constant tweaking and upgrading. The modders are very active, taking feedback from the community and updating the mod accordingly. Don’t worry about the stability of the mod, it works very well and even corrects numerous bugs and crashes from the original games.
The mod is in beta15 right now, with lots of awesome changes like bonus from your starting country, not just your continent and new voice packs and soldier nationalities!
It’s worth mentioning the outdated version of the mod, beta14 which works very well, doesn’t have all the new cool things from beta 15 but is considered a bit easier by the community.
Should you play XCOM: EU/EW before playing long war? Very encouraged, you don’t need to finish a campaign but it would be good to familiarize yourself with the game before jumping into the long war, it is difficult and the game doesn’t really hold your hand, it’s easy to get lost with the tons of stuff that you can do. If it’s too hard for your taste, you can personalize your experience by modifying the game .ini, it’s very easy to do and allows you to customize the difficulty level to something you have fun with.
