Alot of work goes into making a good website, and i highly doubt anyone is willing to spend all the time needed for it to be a good site for free.
Good luck though.

On April 15 2008 23:24 yare wrote: I'll offer my 2 cents mostly on what I think makes web pages sort of suck. First of all, I don't "follow" the pro scene all that much. I know there's 4 leagues, osl, msl, proleague, and gomtv. Most websites give news in a calendar format, without any regard for the tournament. So for a more passive addict of SC, this causes a lot of problems. By the time I know a player I like played a match, 2 other tournaments worth of news has been posted (or not posted), and then I have to go through 4 threads of live reports to find out which tournament the game occurred. Then I have to go to SC2gg.com and search through 14 commentators looking to see if it's been done in English. Then if it's that tournament where there's like a round robin (I think it was msl) in groups sometimes labeled 1-9 and other times a-i, I have to find a 4 month old thread on tl.net listing who's in the groups since this data appears nowhere else I guess. Now for constructive criticism for what would make the formatting of a website good for an audience like me. 1) Have GOMTV news. Like a section where that's all you can read. Friday matches blah blah blah. next line Tuesday matches blah blah blah. Pick either pregame talk, or post game review and only post that in the news. If you have pregame talk make sure the date and time of the game is very visible. If it's post game talk, or simply a link to the video have this updated as close to real time as possible. If you were to take on other events like WCG, either have a "special" news section, or if it's ongoing like maybe you comment for OSL and GOMtv have two different news sections. one for gom one for osl. 2) If your going to have a collaboration with other commentators, perhaps have links to their videos either in the news, or the first post. I'm sure everyone has their "favorite" commentators, and it really sucks when you watch a game in korean then find out a week later the favorite covered the game. So also perhaps have a "english commentary by _____ to come". 3) Make sure the players are labeled clearly in each match. I know you're going to get a lot of die hard fans replying, and the don't mind or don't notice these problems, but I think if there's a reach for a broader audience these are key points to consider when you choose your website format. Hey, I'm the owner of sc2gg, and I have to say, it's good to read most posts like this, they generally help. You definitely are on the right track, and a lot of what you say is what we're trying to get a better handle on right now - organization, and the like, and we're doing so in the forums right now. We're trying to make it possible for people to see all the games with commentary by a variety of different voices. One thing you can do if you haven't already is subscribe to them, and on your subscription page, it tells you who's posted what and how recently, and if you know what's going on in the league, have looked at the schedule here on TL or on my site. Like I say, for each group of games (ODT is next), I'm making a comprehensive sticky post to keep people in the loop while the games are going on. As for your suggestions regarding Tasteless site, I'll answer those as well. 1) This is logical, and very much achievable. There are certainly ways of making things easily accessibly and updateable, and I'm sure that the people who take care of things here at TL are familiar with those ways, just like we are. It all really depends on what exactly Tasteless would like, because as long as everyone is on the same page, a little time is all it takes. 2) I'm trying to organize this for all commentators on my site right now, as explained above. 3) A naming convention for games is also something I want to see the light of day with and has been discussed. Again, thank you for the suggestions, it's good to write these sorts of things because nothing ever gets done otherwise. It takes a little time to make things right, like I know sc2gg is pretty butt ugly right about now, but that's changing too. Just takes time. Keep discussing! Ok not to bash this idea.. but you need to actually pay people to do your website, if you don't, it will not be a good enough website to carry all the things you demand for it to have. That's just the reality. Alot of work goes into making a good website, and i highly doubt anyone is willing to spend all the time needed for it to be a good site for free. I agree with you - a lot of work, far more than I'd ever believed possible, goes into making a good website. But I also only really know of one SC-related website that someone actually said, "you know, I'm going to start a SC website, and it will be my full time job!", and have that actually happen. It's very expensive to hire people, and hard to afford - I know I can't. However, I think your doubt is misplaced A lot of people are really awesome people, and I'm actually 100% sure that Tasteless will get a decent, manageable and improving site for his stuff. I can't be the only one who understands what he's done for SC and the community as a whole.

I just want to express my appreciation for the fact that your website exists. And thank you for taking my little rant well. Butt ugly is fine with me btw. It seems the more "slick" or "fancy" a website gets the less user friendly it gets. And in case my first point wasnt' as clear as I intended. What would be most helpful for me, is like on your site instead of having one news column, have 5-6. teachings, osl, msl, gomtv, foreign events, and a catch all general news. Thanks, Yare

That said, paying for a web designer is the sure fire way when you need something done and you need it done now.

Up until the news posting system update (ie, WordPress, which is a really, really awful thing, by the way - only use it if you have to, because it's a fight), anyway, up until that, you could click on the links in the top red bar that detailed the particulars of what you wanted (ie, Korean Leagues would give you info in that category.) In WordPress, each news story is filed under a category that it applies to, and the idea was that it would be able to sort that depending on what you wanted to see. But now it's broken, and has been a few days. In the future, unknown as to when, since it's actually a little difficult to get that working, and no one on the site likes fighting with WordPress, it may not get fixed for a bit. When it does, though, you'll definitely see an improved news sorting function, very much in line with what you described, as we discussed it internally a while ago too. The site is always in a state of updating, hehe, and like Phyre says, people are volunteering their time to help make things better, so it's not going to get done immediately. I really do wish I had the money to pay for it straight up, because I definitely would do so. Maybe I'll win the lottery.. :/ Tasteless situation is very similar, Phyre described it perfectly.

I would be really helpful if anytime we wish to watch an english vod we could go to that one site. Tasteless covers the GomTV vods. While other sc2gg commentaries try to cover the others.

Also, how much do you get paid? i get asked this a lot, but i really don't get nervous before any cast. People who get too nervous aren't made for broadcasting. I was not nervous my first time nor was i nervous before the GSI. I do get an adrenaline rush, but i find this helpful rather than hurtful. I'm paid very very well. I'm not interested in discussing the exact numbers but i'm probably one of the highest paid (if not the highest paid) among game casters. Although this depends on events. regardless, gl with your site
