I have no idea about ZeRo but the other guys would have deserved it as well imo. GZ to Byun!

Wow, way to make me tear up. From the article: For Life, a player who had the innate mechanical ability to possibly be a master at any game he picked up, it will always be a question of "what if?" At the age of 19, rather than wondering if he could become the greatest SCII player of all time or about which game he could conquer next, he'll sit, a genius unable to compete, forever.
-- Tyler Erzberger
So sad.
Edit: Also from the article on why they picked ByuN: At a time where the predecessor, StarCraft: Brood War, is having a resurgence in South Korea with the return of former stars, SCII is on a raft, floating down a river with only darkness ahead of it, not knowing if it'll go on for years to come or drop off without a split second's notice.
He does a really great job of summing up all my anxiety about the future of StarCraft 2 into a single sentence.

Scroll down to his Smash Wii U results. He's a bonjwa of that game.
ZeRo could almost win by default if this was just by results.

Fairytale year for ByuN who absolutely deserves this considering what he's been through. Couldn't be happier for his success, i'll forever cherish witnessing him win BlizzCon live.

I mean i know that he is the best guy in smash for wiiu, but that alone doesn't mean much imo. Depth of competition, etc is a very important factor and i simply have no idea about that scene :D

i really liked the ByuN article, great reading!

He's fended off the best from all over the world. I imagine the reason why he didn't win was because he didn't take out EVO; which as we know is like the Blizzcon of FGC.

Ok sounds pretty impressive :D I feel the main reason is that the scene simply isn't that relevant in the big picture though? I think that's a reasonable thing to say? While sc2 isn't really in the same league as csgo or lol it still has that special vibe around it, dunno. Maybe i should start watching a bit of smashU

Glad to see him win! He's one of the sweetest Korean pros, and truthfully, I found his interviews and Innovation fanboying to be far more entertaining than other foreigner ever has been.
Overall, he was just the funnest player in Starcraft. His story is great. I do think his wins don't carry the same weight that they would've 2-3 years ago (simply due to the state of the scene) but the story was just the best. No one had a story and personality like his! <3 Byun.

Hey, I'm an editor at ESPN Esports.
Glad you all liked Fionn's work! I was very touched by the ByuN piece as well, especially as a sort of continuation of the "One Man Army" feature he wrote after ByuN won GSL. In fact, the "Why ByuN won Player of the Year" piece earned a lot of recognition within ESPN even outside the esports group for how excellent it was. I will send this thread along to Fionn if he hasn't seen it already.
A side note: although the title of "Biggest Disappointment" might not seem very complimentary at first glance, you'll notice that the death of Proleague was one of the nominees as well in addition to Life. It was great for me that we were able to recognize disappointing events that weren't just from relatively recent esports developments -- like the formation of the ELEAGUE or Immortals -- but also those that had a deep history to them. Both Life and Proleague were carrying the torch for a lineage that was the foundation of esports as we know it today, and I believe their stories helped us convey that historical context to people who might not have known that esports existed over a decade ago.
P.S. TSM ZeRo is freaking amazing - the Smash 4 scene has a significant Japanese presence, and Japan is the Korea of console fighting games.

I really enjoyed it and am very thankful for all the SC pieces on ESPN!
