I really enjoy TL but I'm a bit of a lurker, and in many cases I don't feel like adding much more than "haha" or "+1" which is not appropriate for tl as it clutters the forums needlessly.
I'm fine with that policy, that's why I enjoy browsing the forums here, most opinions are substantiated that's rare on internet.
However, I'm using github a lot, they have this really cool emoticon style feedback on posts, I'm pretty sure it would liven discussions to have such a feature on TL.
I realize it's a bit putting the power to the people as the forums are currently (very well) moderated, but it's more for postive feedback than anything, something pleasing when you're writing a post to know someone has read and appreciated it.
Here's a screenshot of what it looks like in practice.
So various people have cheered the guy on since he's solved the bug. Yes ok, geeks play starcraft too.
This is taken from this random issue thread on github :
https://github.com/travis-ci/travis-ci/issues/7685
Would such a feature be favorably received by the community ?
Would it be feasible to implement it ? Just a +1 -1 button on posts would be a nice start, or just +1 if you're afraid of people bashing.
But this emoticon thing is pretty nice imo, it adds some flavour, if it does not get abused (but that means interactivity).

There's no need for such. I don't even like the idea of +1 to be honest. I like to be able to respond to someone without seeing what others share or not share their opinions, as you can rest assured that people will wave their +1 dicks around.
|
I'm not a fan of downvotes because it just leads to perceived bullying. imagine seeing avilo's posts all with -100, obviously I would get why but I think it discourages people from posting. And even though the +1's don't mean anything people will still turn into meme generators for meaningless points, that's how reddit works and comment sections for popular threads are just too meme heavy.
I think the TL admins actually looked into implementing that kind of system here and decided against it and I'm happy they did. If we want to see voting, then use /r/starcraft, this is a forum and it doesn't need voting to get the point across, I thought the TL admins solved that by enabling custom colors for the helpful posters.

reducing comments to likes and dislikes is a marketing trick that helps gauge someone's ability to influence others
it is not helpful for a casual forum user and creates a toxic environment - people will downvote in place of passive aggressive trolling that might get them banned

well thanks for the answers, even if they seem to answer negatively the "community" question.
I do agree it's a politic choice to offer this kind of thing or not.
But I think it's quite different in a forum type of situation than e.g. reddit or StackOverflow, where up or downvoting is "voting" first and foremost.
In a forum the posts stay where they are, it's not a vote so much as approval or disaproval of an idea.
So the question is whether you value other people's opinions a bit, not whether it directs your own opinion since there is no effect on the post being higher or lower in results. Why am I on the forum if not to gather opinions different than I already hold ? To me, it seems that of course it can be interesting to know if an opinion (a post) is widely shared, widely applauded, or widely controversial, or pretty flat/evokes no response. I do value other people's opinions, especially in numbers (call me democratic, I don't care).
I think most TL users are not so toxic that we would see 100 negative emotes on any avilo post, and at any rate he has his fans that might cheer him to counter that. Spam users could be moderated/limit on emotes per day (except for admins ofc!) etc...

I kind of like and respect the somewhat 'old school' style of this forum (amazing that the internet with its relative infancy can already be percieved to have an old school!). I think there are already enough ways to easily put people down and one-click-judge on the internet. I like encouraging that if you disagree or agree with someone, then taking the time to share your own thoughts is just a better way to feedback and communicate
Posting for fake internet points is great (and a fascinating phenomenon!) but it has its place and has its homes already on imgur and reddit. As for downvotes, I agree that moderation hopefully makes *most* people think twice before posting.
I do think your point about it being a nice feeling to know when someone has read and appreciated your post does have have some merit. Especially as I've noticed things often get quite negatively slanted at TL at times and people seem to respond much more strongly, and often to something they disagree with rather than something they agree on or appreciate. Overall though, i don't think things here need to be dumbed down to one click responses and faces.

I'd like to be able to react to posts with sheep emoji.
|
Stuff like this kills any discussion. Just look at reddit or any social media.
|
Keep it the way it is. All those emoji's dont add much to a discussion and will mostly used to derail a discussion. Thats why im happy TL also doesnt allow twitch stuff like "Kappa" etc. Also +1 and -1 will be "abused" , like on the battle.net forum.
Edit: oh shit, now i used the forbidden word! :D
