Gotta remember that Valyrian steel and magic swords aren't 100% overlapping. Lightbringer was forged in a specific legendary way through blood magic and sacrifice whereas Valyrian steel is just a bunch of old metal from Valyria that nobody knows how to make anymore and might involve magic/dragons/rituals/blood but doesn't imbue any magical powers beyond "-20% to STR requirements to wield", "+50% durability", "+50% damage against undead" and "immune to shatter".

"There will come a day after a long summer when the stars bleed and the cold breath of darkness falls heavy on the world. In this dread hour a warrior shall draw from the fire a burning sword. And that sword shall be Lightbringer, the Red Sword of Heroes, and he who clasps it shall be Azor Ahai come again, and the darkness shall flee before him"
Basically the theory behind John being azor ahai is that he wouldn't be revived if he was not to be the azor ahai. But we saw that Beric Dondarrion holds a burning sword. In the books Beric actually dies once for all, but don't know if that's happening in the show.
Existence of Beric (in the book or TV show) basically pokes giant holes in any "revival = messiah" theories. And casts doubt on the "divine" nature of the Lord of Light's magic. And that's kind of the point of him and Theros, to provide a counterpoint to the red priestesses.

Not useful magic, necessarily, because flaming swords don't do very much (unless you're pyrophobic like Sandor), but magic nonetheless.
If it can kill White Walkers and block their weapons, that is enough to be useful.
Nothing indicates that Beric's cheap parlor trick sword does anything against white walkers. Although any fire is obviously useful against their footsoldiers.

Of course. But in a world of half remembered magic, legends and massive walls that defend against forgotten things, I bet a cheap trick wasn’t created just to show off. Maybe that is what people use it for not, but maybe someone really needed a flaming sword a long time ago.

Highly unlikely given all the marketing and hype
Good chance actually. They said they plan on doing about a year in a half on the final season as they want it to be spectacular. It would be early 2019 if it does take them that long instead of mid 2019.
Endings are so hard for series. We get so few Breaking Bads or Avatar, and that isn’t the fault of the writers. When series have this much cultural relevance, it is hard to know how to close it out. I’m glad they are going to take the time, because a lack luster ending is forever.
It literally is. Not unless the writers of the show are pressured to keep the series running longer than they wanted it to. Otherwise they simply didn't know where they wanted their characters to end up, which is bad writing.
Yeah I still consider Avatar (first series) a work of genius because it has such a solid story arch. All makes sense from the beginning to the end. I can't actually think of any series that do it as well, not even breaking bad.

This is literally the problem with most North American series. They're greenlit for like 8 episodes or something, and if their ratings are good they will get budgeted to continue forever until they're cancelled abruptly.
I don't think the series meta right now is to milk more seasons. Quality is much more valued atm. See what happened with The walking dead, it was a big hit until 3rd season, all my friends and classmates watched it, now I don't know anyone that still watches it.
The quality of the ending really depends on what they do with the White Walkers. If they are some reasonless force of malice and death, then it will a bit of a letdown for me. But if they provide some real information about why the White Walkers recently decided to attack and what caused it, I think we will be in for a good last two seasons.
My prediction is that we find out that the White Walkers are a lot like humans when it comes to their reasons to go to war. That the Night King is just a ruler that decided to take them to war for political reasons. Weird undead ice man political reasons, but political reasons.
I would need to check again, but are we sure that the White Walkers are immortal? They steal babies, so I assume they have to age or grow up. Unless they are raising those babies to full grown people and then turning them.

They definitely aren't waiting for people to grow up before turning them. We saw them turn a baby into a White Walker with the blue eyes and skin and everything at the end of an episode. But agreed, we don't know if they are immortal or not, maybe they age super slowly so they live for hundreds of years, or maybe he's just looking to increase the ranks for the upcoming invasion.

I totally forgot about that scene. That makes sense and I bet they age too. My bet is that those sense in the trailer with John in the north are him seeking out more information on the Walkers.
