One of my buddies Dragon[Pain] likes to use 4/5hatch hydra with a transition to muta or lurk while I use a citadel-first build upon scouting the delayed gas. I usually forego the stargate tech when I see 4 hatch hydra unless I already started it. He plays a relatively low eco start with a faster hydra mass to push me back to my nat to turtle with storms/cannons even if I went for a 4g zealot. Other than the cop-out answer of "just micro/macro better" is there any response that can help me stalemate the mid-game without letting zerg contain me and drone up while taking hive? I'm not so naive as to think theres an opener that will just straight up win but I'm having trouble brainstorming. If anyone is interested I can supply replays as well. Thanks. Dragon is a pretty damn good player and resource himself. Obviously you can get some responses here, but I'd think the best responses are going to be from dragon himself. That said, if you're playing 4 gate zealot, skipping star, you should be able to pressure pretty well right before the hydra mass starts to get large. That timing will come before he reaches a large mass of hydra that really starts shredding unsupported zealots. Once this is deflected, you often will need to cannon up and wait for templar, at which point you can usually push out, work on taking your third, etc.

Without a stargate you do not force him to leave hydras at his bases, you take away the corsair/dt backstab potential, and you give up the chance to break his early gameplan by sniping the few ovis on your half of the map + single dt. I've seen better players experimenting with a robo at their natural which works nicely vs h-busts, contains and allows reaver corsair play.

Think about it, zerg gets 3 larvae per hatch even when they drone up, it's still a lot more units he can produce at once than you can, you definitely need more gateways to compensate. I'd say 5-6 gateways should be good if your macro is on point and not leaving them idle for too long. Also depending on the timing and situation, I get 7-9 gateways when I'm about to get a 3rd or have a 3rd. Because at that point your economy should support that many gateways or your resources are just stacking at this point. Having a good mix of zealot ht and dragoons later is important especially against lurkers or your zealots will just melt. Also by having dragoons with your composition, hydras can't get free shots off your zealots when engaging or disengaging as much.

1 : At least one corsair to clean the 1st ovi at your nat. 2 : DT take map control (Check for an opening at natural/3rd, bully any units that try to go out). 3 : He has no way to contest it without overlord speed. 4 : Set up for what ever zerg is going for (using your corsair for scouting). It's been working for me up to B+. Dunno at higher level.
