I am in a little need of help with an advice or a kick in the rear to finally make the next step forward. The thing is that I mained Protoss since the SC1 days, up until now and I kind of got bored of them. I want to switch to Terran or Zerg... and that's the thing. I can't decide which one to pick. I've played 100+ games with each one, but that didn't help much though. That made me even more uncertain. I want to try something new and completely different from Protoss in terms of play and everything.
I like almost everything about the Terran race (the feel and vibe of the race, their rudimentary and yet cool technologies, the gameplay, the campaign, their design and concept), but I don't like the fact that they are space rednecks very much, and most of all I hate the fact that they are human.
I like the Zerg race for its gameplay, its lore, for its design and concept, but I hate the fact that they are slimmy and gross (creep), I hate that they are kind of primitive compared to the other races, although they don't need technology to keep up because they are practically nature in all her fury, but still I don't like it that much, and I hate in general the fact that they are the bad guys.
I don't like the Terran vs. Terran mirror matchup and neither the Zerg vs. Zerg mirror matchup. Although TvT is a lot more bearable.
They are both satisfying to play with... but the Zerg race seems to be a bit more oddly satisfying.
So what do you fine people think? How and what advice can you give me to help me tackle this situation?
Thank you in advance!
P.S. 1: I don't want to settle on playing random because I want to play competitively and "GET GUD" and playing random would only slow me down. I want to dedicate myself to one race, and as it seems Protoss wasn't the one because i got bored of it.
P.S. 2: I've tried flipping a coin, but it doesn't work at all because I don't like leaving things for chance to decide.
You should play the race you enjoy the most. The lore and stuff doesn't matter when you're laddering. Just think about which match-ups you can stomach the most. Sounds like you don't hate Protoss vs Protoss so maybe you should do that. I agree that it's one of the least unbearable mirrors, and spamming AOE spells versus terrran and zerg is fairly enjoyable and simple.
depends. pick zerg or protoss if you want to climb ranks. you have so many strategies and allins thats viable whit little apm. Pick terran if you want to become really good, but struggle to climb at start.
zerg. they are not bad guys, they are badass. go for it. Pros: - the most different from protoss - not human - not redneck - never gets boring - zvz is short and you are back to having fun - for the swarm Cons: - hard to quit
I don't really know how you expect other people to tell you what race to play. They will probably suggest playing their own race. Then you will have feedback about both races and will still be confused because you will still have a number of pros/cons for each race, same as you had before.
My personal stance on the races is that I don't like playing as Zerg because I find the economy/unit production balance to be difficult to hit especially when you have to deviate from build orders or later in the game, as well as needing to macro from multiple disparate locations for unit production. I also don't like dealing with the limitations of creep mechanics. That's my stance.
As a rule of thumb terran is more proactive and zerg more reactive, of the two. Obviously not 100% accurate, but it's much harder to be aggressive as zerg without being required to do damage, while if you just scout carefully and react as a terran you will generally give your opponent too much breathing room
Not 100% true, you can develop your own style as you play either race, but you will be going against the grain to do so, which could be a bit harder when you're first starting
Recently switched to Zerg after playing as Protoss since WoL and im so glad I did. The protoss play style didn't suit me at all no matter how hard I wanted it too. I wanted to play reactive and more fluid which I found Zerg allows me too. Since the switch I'm playing faster/better beating higher level opponents and also not getting as frustrated when I lose. Found with Protoss I used to get so annoyed that after 10 mins of carefully defending/building my deathball/doing small counter attacks that I could make 1 small mistake or misclick and lose. Don't have the same feeling when playing Z.
Moral of the story, play the race that when you play it, feels most comfortable to your mindset of playing and what you want to achieve.
I play mainly mech terran and zerg in sc2, so hopefully I am a little less biased.
If you want to play competitively, you probably shouldn't be bothered by "creepiness" and lore.
Not wanting to play either mirror is probably your main problem. I recommend you find a professional game and copy an aggressive mirror build and master the micro aspect of it. That way at least you get practice out of it. Afterwards you might grow to like it if you can control the bling ling war or know the timings of drops and banshees...etc.
Do you do equally well with both races? You can check the WL ratio for those 100 games for each. If it is, I would recommend Terran because the skill ceiling is higher. Alternatively, Zerg is easier to learn and to get results from practice faster.
Lastly, if you want a single word answer, disregard everything I've said up til now: ZERG
A word form the same Oldie that has been playing Protoss since 1998. I started to play Random 2 months ago and it quickly came to me, that I needed to rise my Terran and Zergs skill fast, hence I played Terran or Zerg only. A few weeks later, Random came back and it gave me SO MUCH FUN I haven't had since 2011.
Later on, Zerg became my main race, which I love due to amazing tools and macro-oriented approach, it's soo... "colorful" to me plus it gives more freedom that Toss doesn't have (I became diamond after one month playing from scratch). Not to mention that I started to rise my understanding of the game much higher due to T/P/Z bootcamp.
So if I were you, I'd give myself a chance and pick the Zerg.
I'm a Terran player and I chose which race I thought was coolest if that helps. I also chose Terran, because they were the good guys; they have guns, nukes, and tanks; they're human; etc.
A cool twist to the coinflip method I once heard: -> Decide to do whatever the coin says -> throw the coin -> while it's spinning, see if you catch yourself hoping for either Terran or Zerg (or protoss)
Playing Zerg is frustrating for me, as you cannot control much about game flow but instead have to adapt and be passive/defensive most of the time or all-in/semi all-in if you decide to have any impact on that.
In LOTV even ZvP went shit as protoss air kills it and you are being put on a timer whenever P decides to go for heavy air or if you manage to keep up have to play long games of little air trade-offs which can be very tiring. But I am not really up to date :p
Hello once again! Wow! I didn't expect that so many advices! Thank you soooo much guys! Thanks TL community! I have read all your comments and advices! :-D
@xTJx What i hate about ZvZ, like LSN said is that it's a game mostly of reacting to the opponents reactions and so on. Plus the tech switches are brutal because they are so fast that i usually get caught with my pants down. But with Terran if I miss scouting something and I see lets say colossus incoming, I usually manage to stall my opponent long enough with drops until i have at least 4-6 Vikings on the field. And what I dislike about the TvT mirror matchup are the tank wars and the unavoidable doom-drops. What i dislike about the "tank wars" part is the "battle of screen pixels" if i can call it like that. I mean if i put my tank with a pixel more to the right, my tank doesn't shoot the opposing tank, but it gets shot at by it; only if i move it somehow somewhere a bit God knows where, only then my tank is safe from being shot at and it can rain destruction on the enemy. But I digress, it still is a lot more bearable the TvT than ZvZ.
@niteReloaded Thank you for the tip! I didn't thought about it that way.
As i had said my dear friends, thank you once again! Your comments and advices had helped me quite a bunch! Really! I have decided to go for the Terran race! :-D Don't be sad my Zerg fellows! You'll infest me another day :-)
I played protoss in BW, but only in LANs with friends. When SC2 came out, i got so excited about the new protoss mechanics, and in 2010 i played protoss a lot (mainly in 2v2). Eventually i felt like "SC2 was a boring game" and stopped playing for a while (mainly because WOL protoss was extremely stale and boring). Then i started watching pro play and fell in love with terran gameplay, and terran is still the most fun race for me.
Race, lore and "space rednecks vs starship troopers aliens" don't matter. At the end of the day, all that matters if you want to invest 200+ hours into getting better at a game is gameplay and how much fun you experience while playing it.
