I'm interested in starting up a new SC2 league in the next month or two. With recent news of SC2 going free to play I'm wondering if it might be a good time to start something up? I have experience in running various leagues/tournaments in SC2 and other games, but I've been away from it all for quite some time. So I have a few basic questions that I'd appreciate if you guys could give me some feedback on:
- Is there a need for a new SC2 league?
- What type of league would you guys be interested in? Team league, 1v1 league, some other type of league?
- Any format recommendations? When I was around All Kill Team leagues seemed to be the most popular.
- What are the current competitive maps that I should use?
- Anything else?
Thanks guys! Looking forward to reading some feedback.

Except if you can revive the PL, the answer is no.
Look at WardiTV Team League S7, and that's the best you can do in foreignland ...

With regard to team leagues, you can refer to NEO Star League in China. Even though it has a decent prizepool, not so many people are interested in it, even in China.

So is the team scene sort of dead? No clans? I wouldn't necessarily target just pro teams, I'd be okay with running a league more for amateur teams etc as long as they are active.

You might be able to assist some of the ones already running. I forget the names of them, though. There are quite a few for amateurs

You can do a lot better just by implementing a league system different than a bunch of outdated excel spreadsheets as base for coordinating a team league L O L
OP - more people like you are needed in this community!

I'd ask for a team games lead - they can be really fun!

I really liked the SSL format . I know it was not the most popular league but I found the format very attractive.

I'm not saying it is dead. What I want to express is that not so many viewers are interested in this league, especially the double-round robin stage (though playoffs is much more popular than regular season since it is an offline event).
Sorry for the misunderstanding

Or Archon mode. I know the game isn't balance for archon but that could be fun. I don't know if I would actually tune in though.
As for the OP, There are already some leagues (1v1 or team) that aren't followed so much. I would say that it also depends on how much you would invest (you + sponsors I guess) in the prize pool. If you attract top level players, you might have viewership. If not, you can probably expect 100-150 viewers, and 500 for the final of the event.
On the other hand, I recently thought that there isn't enough weekly tournaments, with Go4 and Olimo being the main ones. I feel like a third, with enough prize pool (more than 100€ total) could be interesting for players, and for viewers.
something that could also be interesting is to have an equivalent of the O'gaming tournament "underdogs", but for another country (of course) or region. Like USA or Canada, Mexico or any region you feel. In France we have a good viewer base that help that kind of events, but the idea of "who's the best French ?" is also attracting people here.

idk, I think Archon is a flop because its visually identical to 1v1, its not something you can build much around, especially when master smurfs can just solo play vs kids in archon mode on the ladder.

Thanks for all the replies guys! Feels like there are more encouraging replies then negative ones! That definitely motivates me.
As for the league system, I feel like I can definitely do a better job then majority of the leagues out there. I have the capabilities and experience to put together a nice system that would automate a lot of the grunt work like submitting lineups, schedules, match reports and so on.
I've been thinking what type of format would make sense for a team league. In the past I ran an All Kill format, but personally I didn't really like it. I think the clan wars used to be too long since there could only be one game played at a time and sometimes teams with just one really good player could still dominate. Right now I'm toying around with a format something like:
- Each team submits 3 starters to play on predetermined starting maps. Games for starting players are BO3, loser picks the next map.
- First team to score 3 points wins the clan war.
- So lets say its Team A vs Team B. and Team A is up 2-1. Meaning Team A has 2 players that won and Team B has one. In this scenario we would go into overtime mode and it would be the one remaining Team B player vs one of the Team A players. Team A would have the choice who of the 2 remaining players goes into overtime. At this stage it would be BO1 so since Team B is down they would have to go 2-0 against the player from Team A and Team A player would only need to win once to clinch the clan war. So if Team A losses the first overtime game then its 2-2 and the players play again.
I think format like that could be easier to manage. Teams would only need to have 3 players present for clan wars so it should be easier to schedule. I think clan wars would go by faster since all the matches can be played at the same time and there wouldn't have to be a bunch of players waiting around. I'm also thinking of releasing schedules in stages. Stage 1 could be something like this:
- Schedules released in stages.
- So for example Stage 1 = 3 weeks/5 clan wars.
- So a team would have a window of 3 weeks to schedule and play 5 clan wars.
- I think since the format would require only 3 players from each team per clan war this shouldn't be too hard on teams, especially since there would be a 3 week window and it's easier to schedule some clan wars over others, but this gives teams a chance to work everything out throughout this window.
Some have mentioned viewership etc in this thread. I think that definitely wouldn't be something I focus on the first couple of seasons, my biggest concern would be just finding enough active, well organized teams to participate.
As for prizes, I don't have a huge budget out of my pocket, but I've been thinking of tying prize pool into how well a team does and how many points it scores. So for example a team scores 27 points in the regular season and goes on to win in the playoffs. I think i'd do something like 27*10 = $270 for the winner. Something fun like that were the actual points translate into the money that you'll win at the end.
What do you guys think? These are just some of the ideas I've been toying around with. I'm open to suggestions/criticism.

The format gets complicated when it goes 2-1 and then 2-2, but that could be interesting. All games at the same time sounds convenients for players who have limited schedules, but inconvenient for teams as they wouldn't be able to observe each others game.
It also mean that games cannot be casted live. Which isn't a problem but something to have in mind.
As for viewership, it is obvious that first two season might have less viewers than following ones. But it is still something to take into account if you are looking for sponsors.
For the prizes, 10$ (or €) per point might be a lot. Imagine 10 teams (of 3 players that's manageable). In a round robin, that's 90 matches. If they all go 3-0 (minimum amount of points), then it's 270 points distributed, so 2700$ to give. If you want a 3 month league, that's 900$ to give every month. And if all games goes to 3-2, that's 4500$ (1500$/month) I like the idea, and this could make for interesting matches, as every players would play there best. But this is just a warning. Especially if you want to give extra prizes for top 2 for example. :-)

Thanks for feedback guys! This was very useful. I talked to a few more people privately and in other places besides TL, and I've decided to go through and try starting up a team league. Format is still up for debate, but after some conversations I'm heavily leaning towards pro league format, but it'll most likely be a BO5 instead of BO7. I'm currently reviving a site that I had developed previously and will be adapting it to handle this format. Stay tuned for an official announcement, probably within the next ~two weeks! Setting myself a timeline:
- ~December 1 - Official reveal of the site and announcement of the league.
- ~December 15 - Open registration.
- ~January 3 - Closing registrations.
- ~January 8 - League starts.
Also post your league name ideas if you have any!

yeah all kill isn't a good format coz 1 player can just win it for teams. i like the 3 player rule, can help smaller teams. team leagues are a lot of fun, so good luck!

It's pretty friggin' awesome to see motivated people like you! Best of luck to you! I hope it works out!

In bo5 do teams only register 2 players? with one of them being ace?. I think some leagues require 4 players and that's a bit much considering how SC2 is mostly a 1v1 game, so it's nice to see a change.
WC3 used to have a cool 2 player league. They played till 6 games consisting of 3 bo2's. Two 1v1 bo2's and a 2v2 bo2. If the two teams were even at 3-3, they'd play a 1v1 bo1 Ace match.
