See: https://www.si.com/olympics/medals/country wow that sounds stupid. BTW two close silver medals for japan! Could have been both gold :x it's because the Olympics were a big part of Cold War propaganda
but yeah they flip flop at times just to give the USA higher position. It came up a lot in 08 when China had the most golds but USA did it by total because they had 110 vs China's 101

the IOC and IIHF used to create rules to fuck Canada in international hockey events all the time. Once Canadian broadcasters started generating big ratings and spending big money on broadcast rights all of a sudden "Canada has a voice at the international table".

It's not like the IOC has an official ranking that gives a big parade to the top country. Media organizations are free to rank countries as they please on their sports page. If I'm the Australian media, I can rank medal winners in alphabetical order. Afghanistan is going to have to medal to knock me out.

I would advice against pulling a communist flag in front of a south-korean crowd. Or even in Russia for that matter.

Are you comparing the groupstage game of this year with the final from four years ago, or the groupstage games of both olympics? I assume the final will be big this year again.

It is not a flag. it is a symbolic rallying cry of the powerless.

Am I the only one who find it kind of lame that on place the anouncer are all english with korean only doing translation once in a while? I get why, but it feel like when you throw buckets of public money at the olympic you could at least expect to have the event in you own language.

Our football team might have disintegrated, but at least we still have speed skating. A 22 year old newcomer who only did her first professional race in november last year, rode an amazing race and won gold on ladies 5k speedskating today, giving us 6 out of 7 gold medals in the speedskating so far. The one we missed, was won by a Dutch-Canadian who only got a Canadian passport 4 years ago.
Pretty silly stuff but the 500m is still upcoming and we usually don't win that one at least
Also I'll never get over what an insane sport skeleton is. Summer Olympics need to introduce human cannonballs or something to catch up.

How does one decide who gets the last stone in the first end in curling? Because that looks like a big advantage to me, and in the mens tournament teams who have this advantage are currently 13-2.

It's decided by who can sweep a pre-determined floor fastest.
