here's an exaggerated example:
sometimes my muta's are also just not close enough for them all to fire and its really annoying having rines survive cos only one shot got in.
any help would really be appreciated, thanks.

a) not grouping with overlord b) not keeping them moving all the time and you've already eliminated the first option so.... ?

Despite my whole magical boxes thing, it seems that stacking mutas is not 100% reliable. If the mutas are quite close together, and move command will cause them to go to that spot and be stacked up. If the mutas are a bit more spread out though, move commands that are a short distance and make the mutas fly in horizontal directions do not seem to make them stack. Instead they behave like if they were within the magical box and fly in formation. Knowing this, the reason why people say keep momentum up for mutalisks is that if you issue many move commands while your mutas are close together, they will always stack up for every move command. If however you get lazy and let them sitting around, they'll start to drift and won't behave 100% responsively. In that case, use diagonal move commands which work 100% all the time no matter if the mutas are close together or a bit more spread apart, then one you are in that very stacked state, any move command will keep the mutalisks stacked, you just have to issue them frequently before they start drifting, The reliability of the diagonal movement is also why you see mutas approaching a target in a 45 degrees diagonal fashion more often than a more vertical or horizontal direction.
