Preamble My greatest draw to TL has been the LR threads. What I wish to do is be able to make LRs for Dota a little more easily.
A proper live report IMHO requires the picks/bans: + Show Spoiler +
The hero assignments: + Show Spoiler +Alliance vs. Natus Vincere The International 2013 Grand Championship Game 1
and the laning information: + Show Spoiler +
To this end, I've got a few requests, with the most reasonable first.
Request 1: The [h] tag greatly simplifies the process, but there are several heroes that are missing [h] tags or have outdated images for them. They are, as of this date, namely:
Broodmother, Earth Spirit, Elder Titan, Ember Spirit, Legion Commander, Lion, Omniknight, Phoenix, Shadow Fiend, Silencer, Skywrath Mage, Sniper, Storm Spirit Terrorblade, Wraith King and Venomancer.
It would be great if these, and any other changed heroes were included/added by TI4.
Request 2: Given the likelihood of viewers who have never played dota joining in for TI4, it would be good if the image of an [h] tag displayed the name of the hero upon mouse-over.
Request 3: A wiki tag for dota which displays the hero like while displaying the url on mouse-over would be good too. If it could also do this for players would be even better.
Request 4: A stylised image that quickly shows the status of towers and barracks in the game would be an amazing tool for LRs. The game has one that displays it like so: , but it is difficult to access and process and leaves much to be desired.
That's about it. Much thanks for all the cool stuff that's been done for dota already.

Just posting in here to say we've read your feedback and are not ignoring it!

Once again, thanks for the support provided by TL. Since the aim seems to be for ease of use, I've got a couple more suggestions.
1. The current hero tag names are pretty clunky. They should allow for the short-hands that the community are used to. EG. Leshrac, lesh, and ts should all be valid.
2. The tags will probably be used alongside text. kills , but dies to laguna. doesn't look that nice.
kills but dies to laguna is better but I'm sure a neater solution can be found.
Perhaps you could adjust the size of the tags or make a standard vertically centered text format to make it look neater.
2a. In the specific case for purchasing items, you might want to implement tags for them too, such as:
3. This is a bit of a luxury, but being able to change the colours of the border to indicate which side the hero is on could make LRs slightly clearer.

something i've been trying to work on - getting the sprites and then putting them into the map. it's all manual so far but i imagine it wouldn't be too hard to code something to do it automatically? just need bans, we can put them on the left and right of the image.
as for live reporting itself e.g. your tower/icon suggestions, not sure of that quite yet, but the map should clearly show picks/bans/lane assignments/players better? i suppose it doesn't quite show pick order though hrmm. maybe we could just keep the current pick/ban layout underneath

Haha, that looks great. there'll probably be some space issues with some teams, such as cloud 9's tri-lane of eternalenvy, pieliedie and aui_2000. I'd still like a compact icon for towers, since that's information which could be in every update of an LR, and it seems like overkill to use the blown-up minimap.
Also, now that you've elongated the hero icons, I believe there's enough space to fit any player's nick in legibly.
I think every pro's nick fits into 9x2 letters and I'm sure there's a font that would make it look nice.

For pick order, you might use player colours. Pink/blue for first picks and then down the colours. It doesn't have to fit with whichever slot the player really has, that has no impact on the game or understand it.

For some reason I forgot to reply to this yesterday AND the day before!
Regarding the requests. Number 1 is good, this is one of those things that was on a to-do forever but I never sat down and fixed all the portraits. I'm liking opterown's new layout more and more and think we may just swap all of these to those images because it's so much easier to update and keep current. This also has the potential to be better inline - originally I had hoped the square icons would be okay in the middle of paragraphs but as your example shows it's not great. Request 2 makes a lot of sense as well, I'm not sure how on-hover works for BBCode but I'd imagine it's very doable.
For the wiki tags I'm not sure. This is already doable manually and while it would be sort of nice to have it in one tag I'm not sure it adds enough to warrant having another tag for that - there are also concerns with having a lot of custom BBCode. This is also a concern I have with adding in common shorthand to hero names for the [h] tags. As we add more of these it begins to become a strain on the server due to how the markup is processed, we're already sort of pushing it with the 100 heroes in addition to standard forum things and adding in 3-4 abbreviations for each hero adds a ton to that. I don't 100% remember how this works however so it's something I can check into, I think we may already have a better solution however in developing a tool that is clickable on the forum that will process that automatically for people.
I'm not sure exactly how we would show tower states. I like the idea but I think we would basically need to have images set for every possible combination and then develop a good shorthand for showing how to call the specific one you need? I'm not sure logistically how that would work in a way that's easy for people to remember and do but there may be a solution here. I guess we could make our own syntax but it would require there to be a string of values since there are 6 sets of towers you need to account for.
I also like the idea of the player names for lane assignments but I feel like we might be able to make them more pretty. I'm also a little worried about adding in bbcode there for the reasons described above but I need to educate myself again on the actual tech issues there I may be wrong.
I'm super into opterown's idea for the lane images. Rich likes it and thinks we can find a way to automatically generate those and work them into posts but we're not sure yet how doable it is, hopefully by the end of the week we can figure out where to best go with that.

The tower states are impossible to do since there are a thousand possible combinations
edit: well not impossible, but the OP would have to enter tower states manually each time, which I guess isn't that bad if you can make some sort of program that can parse something like...
into an image using the x's

In my imaginings, the tower thing would make a nicely formatted block of 18 images. You'd only need 6 characters to express it, 1 for each lane and side, using 0-3 for number of towers destroyed. so you could type say 213121 and get
Excusing my terrible mspaint attempt, I'd think this is workable. You could also put in rax status the same way.
