Stargate Universe is set on the Ancient ship Destiny, which was launched nearly a million years ago. Several ships were sent ahead of it to seed the universe with Stargates. The Ancients had planned on using the Stargate to board Destiny when it was far out enough into the universe, but learned how to ascend before that time. In order to reach this ship, an address would have to be dialed consisting of nine chevrons, a possibility that had been unknown in the previous Stargate series.
Does anyone watch this, it is the latest series of the franchise and though I am familiar with the world of Stargate. I have never watched Atlantis, or even most of SG1, but so far I am loving this series, especially since it is not like any of it's predecessors where they go through the gate and an hour later are back home and safe. Some fans hate the series because for the sole reason that it isn't like that. Hopefully the series has a healthy run and isn't canceled.
Stargate + Battlestar Galactica + Lost in Space + Star Trek: Voyager = Stargate Universe.
The reason why some diehard fans hate SGU is because they believe that the company canceled the previous two shows to promote SGU. I've watched the first episode and I can already tell that it holds at least the same quality, if not higher, as the previous shows and I'll look forward watching it.
this show imo potentially is the next epic series like Battlestar, It is absolutely amazing and well worth the watch for any space sci fi fan. Bout to go watch the newest ep in a few minutes.
To give a better idea of how myself,my brother and a few friends view this show, it is battlestar meets firefly, ie the coming of two of the best sci fi space shows of all time. Seriously check this out.
It's too much like BSG. Stargate was more of a family show in the same tradition as star trek.
I don't get how it is anything like firefly? except the group of people on a ship part. BSG was actually intense and well plotted. SGU forces emotion and suspense on the audience.
Every characters on SGU started acting like jerks and five episodes in it's still the same plot, it's like they are just stuck there trying to escape disaster on every episode.
It's like BSG in the beginning of season 4, the survivor theme is getting tiring.

That. and the repetitive life threatening issues that keep popping up, which result in more dog eat dog bickering. Hopefully it gets better and has more aliens and more scenes then on a damn ship where they have no idea what anything is -_-

Eh, I would say that for a beginning to a series where they randomly appear on a ship super old they know nothing about, that isnt a bad start . I'm sure you will get to see the offworld missions soon.
I'm really not feeling it. The last couple seasons of SG1 were a step down from the series, Atlantis was a step down from that, and this seems to go even further down. Right now it feels like they're just milking the franchise.
sg-1 was one of my favorite shows, atleast for the first 6 or 7 seasons. definitely went downhill after that, with season 10 being so bad it was unwatchable.
i tried to like SGU, but i can't seem to really get into it. i don't like any of the characters, unlike sg-1 where i like just about every character on the show heh.
i was hoping for a return to basics with this show, but like others have said, it feels like they're just trying to milk the new sci-fi show trend. guess we'll see though.
watched every sg-1 sga episode, been watching it for years, did not like BSG, do not like SGU for the same reasons, i cant even believe they did this to the stargate series, why not just make another battlestar galactica and leave stargate alone or cancel it, i would rather have them just stop making stargate altogether then do what they did with sgu
i like it, not so much for the acting as for the general setting and production. music and cg is pretty good so far, will prolly get cancelled tho since 90% of their original fans whine cause they changed it from the goofy corny sci-fi feel of the old stargate series. all the sex scenes and romance is really stupid though, and eli's lines are corny as fuck.
Absolutely amazing cliffhanger for the half point of the season. The ending also surprised me. I will be very interested to see how it plays out when it starts up again
Sigh SGU is just disappoint to me, Sci-fi's have been moving more and more into territory of drama thus space opera. I fucking hate space operas if i wanted a good drama i would watch a good drama i don't need sci fi elements to make a drama good it just makes it cheezy.
We never saw at least in major plot really much of anything that could be called space opera in SG1
SG:A did do that for a large part but it was 2ndary to the action and sci-fi
SG:U is just overwhelmed in this shit, i swear every episode they reference a sex scene with a cheezy panning and fade overs. God dammit if you want to make a crappy softcore porn do that don't ruin a good franchise with it.
They said that SGU would be about what is inatly human though a survival kind of premise on the show, that was fine but it's not what i see.
Sci-fi has always been to me sense Star Trek about allegories to human experience as a species not on a personal level. where they would focus on human nature as a whole not pouring over every detail like in a drama.
T_T done venting my disappointment in the show and reading the comments in this blog just make me sad, why the hell do you all just want a show that is a drama by heart but is just so happening in a sci fi based world to me that isn't sci fi it's just a darma.
The episode that amazed me the most so far was Time, I think, where there are those bugs on that planet and they have to use the stargate to give the solution to themselves in the past, multiple times. Really, the idea and the realization was great. I can't wait to see the second half of the season.
as a hardcore stargate fan i couldn't miss this. i like it a lot so far, although some episodes were pretty boring. loved ep Time tho. i'm not sure if they are going to introduce some bad guys, also i'd love more planet trips. roll on second half of the season!

After the 10th ep, its pretty obvious who one of the main badguys is going to be
Yeah it sucks that SGU season seems to be following the likes of Rome, and BSG.
No progress on the script front. In fact, I re-read the eighteen pages I have so far and hated it. Carl, who is having an equally tough time, told me about an interview he read with David Chase in which The Sopranos creator revealed that, in his many years working on television, he had met only one writer who actually enjoyed writing – and that was Stephen J. Cannell. I’ve never met Stephen J. Cannell, so I’ve met none.
On the bright side, we did do some more spinning and, thanks to Brad and Rob’s frenzied back-and-forth, have worked out the series finale. Yep, it’s true. We have a definite ending for this grand adventure – but it’s one we wont’ be getting around to for a while.
Today, Visual Effects Supervisor Mark Savela was in to show us temp shots for Pain, Incursion I, and Incursion II. Let’s just say that those of you yearning for space-faring action are in for a treat.
I used to be a huge fan of all the stargate series. SG-1, Atlantis. I started watching them when I was younger after seeing the Stargate movie (which I loved and still do). But this show, SG-Universe.. Is absolutely terrible. I watched the series primiere and immediatly I knew this was not going to be what I expected. I watched every episode until they left that scientist on the planet (rosh?) forgot his name.. anyways, biggest TV letdown of my life... I'd much rather watch American Idol or Operation Repo than this crap. Sci fi station killed my favorite TV series booooo

I have pretty much the same feelings, but I am still going to watch this. Robert Carlyle is best actor in any of these series and him only makes it a reason to me to watch this. Show is not that great but beats trolling on forums .
Oh wow, I didn't know there was a TL Stargate following (I was expecting there to be and found it unusual).
But yeah, I'm a huge fan of SG-1 and Atlantis, I love the whole Stargate ... universe, lol, as in the story and timeline, etc. And Richard Dean Anderson is so awesome. Having Macgyver as the leader of your lead squad is definitely pure win. But Stargate Universe is kind of disappointing for me. I feel there's just way too much drama for a non-drama genre and though they are original thanks to the Stargate storyline, there's still a lot of "oh this reminds me of [this] show/series/movie/story".
Stargate is known for their humour, epic battles and epic situations, and ridiculously entertaining technologies... SGU has mediocre and sometimes lame humour, not really any battles, half decent situations, and interesting-but-not-that-interesting technologies.
I remember reading back when they first announced SGU that they couldn't figure out how to make Earth (and SG command and their allies) more powerful cause we already have the most powerful shit in three galaxies and beaten thousands of years old technology with our 15-year old Macgyvered technology. So they're like, ok, put the SG people in a situation where we can't use our imba shit.
Also SGU is missing a lot of components of Sci-Fi storytelling. It's about fighting battles of good and evil. It's about self-discovery and discovering others. It's about solving the differences among different people and building friendships with others unlike you It's about uniting the universe together. It's about discovering new technology. SGU has these but not a lot and presented poorly.
However, what I do look forward to seeing is the epic "stargate manufacturing ships". That'd be awesome, cause the way of building stargates has eluded us since the beginning of SG-1. The only glimpse we got of building a stargate from scratch was that episode where Carter had some Ancient guy buy a lot of titanium off ebay and build a disposable stargate in her basement.
I watched all of SG-1 and Atlantis, but just haven't gotten around to watching SGU yet. (I don't have a tv at school, so I guess I will have to dl it or something.)
To people that were fans of the original 2 series that watch SGU, do you like it? Do you think I should watch it or not? (I haven't read the thread yet, sorry to say, but I am going to in a bit, so if this has already been addressed sorry.)
Edit: Actually, I'm afraid of SGU spoilers in this thread...are there any or am I safe?

SGU is terrible, dont even bother. I stopped watching mid season and I've been a fan of stargate FOREVER.

i definintely agree, it just totally doesn't fit at all with the stargate name. I mean it has spaceships and stuff but that's about it.
I reaaaaaallly hope it starts to pick up into something meaningful soon, cause i do like alot of the cast

Haha i only clicked on this blog thinking hey didn't i post a comment on this and i totally did, exactly having to do with what you pointed out. I hate space opera crap if i wanted a drama i'd watch a movie as shows + drama = crap
I mean how smart is it for the Civilians to try and take over the ship from the Soldiers who managed to save the Destiny in ep. 11, they attack again and the Aliens manage to board(due to the fact that they are shown coming through the Stargate in the 2nd half preview), Soldiers manage to save them and hopefully Camile Wray is killed off in the process.
Yeah you did i also expected it. I'm too invested in the series i keep watching it even though i don't really like it SGU that is i have all the dvd's of SG-1 and all the recording of Atlantis from my tivo although i didn't like Atlantis as much as sg-1 for the same elements in Universe U just takes the whole drama and crap to a "whole...nother ...evel" atleast the cheezy and "suspence" driven kind of camera work isn't as prevalent anymore.
Also congrats to them for not making a in the dark softcore porn scene in there this episode!

I've only seen the first few eps of this season and honestly I was underwhelmed. I'll probably catch up at some point just because it's Stargate, and that preview looked great. I hope it improves.
I'm a huge fan of all the Stargate shows and movies (and especially the original movie). SGU is baller, though it raises some other questions like "They have the map of the path of Destiny, so they KNOW where the seedships & Destiny were, and they can communicate with home...why aren't Earth forces looking in those other Galaxies for Alteran descendents to try to rescue those on Destiny?"
Baller...a race BETTER at technology than the Alterans
. I love SGU so much more than SGA (which wasn't very good, IMO). SG-1 was awesome, and I think they could have kept going with it. Atlantis needed to end...it was going nowhere fast.
[edit] Anyway, I like all of the characters so far (with the exception of some of the ones they killed off a while back). Camile is important too. There's only a few Civilians who can actually lead (Rush and Camile) and Rush is nuts. Eli isn't fit to lead, he's good in his middle-management position. Chloe is 97% useless right now, but I can see her filling her most likely new role+ Show Spoiler +
mid-wife, as someone said before
well enough, and possibly becoming Civilian leader later what with her dad being a senator or whatever.
