The SC2 Beta is up and coming. Esport-athletes from all games are looking forward to it, even casual-gamers are interested and so is the media. Is it a good think? Most certainly yes.
And still, I don't like it all the time. I don't know why, but sometimes, I miss the elitist feeling of the "underground", the scene, the small amount of people (outside korea) who love this 10 year old game, who are still playing and watching it, who see the art in it. The feeling that if you meet someone who knows BW and still watching it, you are on the same wavelength immediately. The feeling that you know he truly understands the genius of the game and after all, deserves it.
I know it probably is as stupid as saying "hey, I listened to this band/music way before it became popular" or even stopping listening to this music at all because of that.
Even tho I know that, when I'm in the subway watching the monitors displaying advertisement/news of ESL mostly with the contents of SC2, I sometimes get this nostalgic feeling, missing the elitist of SC/BW.

well thank the activlizzard and its "esports team" and their "we just thought up a bunch of cool units with no thought about balance before hand. now we are trying to make it all work."
|
I know what you mean. I hated how I always tried to convince my friends to appreciate starcraft. It seemed like everybody thought "lol why are you playing some shitty 10 year old game. the graphics suck."
Now that SC2 is out and everybody cares about starcraft I kind of miss the old days where playing Starcraft felt like being some part of cool underground club almost. I know it isn't logical and starcraft gaining popularity is generally a good thing but I feel the exact same way as you.

Same here man, hardly any people in SG appreciates Starcraft anymore.
"Starcraft? You mean SC2?"
"No, the first one. You know, Brood War."
"That crappy looking 10 year old game?"

Well you can still cheer for all the former SC:BW players in SC2 =]
|
former bw players in sc2 are now sc2 players, unless you're actually playing bw more than sc2, i think most ppl with keys (and were bw players) are now sc2 players.

Uh what?
If you'd be one of the true oldschool players you'd realize how well balanced the game is so far, if you expected anything better than this then you sir are delusional.

I understand exactly what you mean. I think there's still always going to be the group of people that truly appreciate BW. That elitist feeling should still be present with all of them I would think. So now you have everyone playing SC2, there's still two different groups. The original BW players that really followed/played it, and the people that just play SC2.
My opinion might not be the best though because even with a beta key I still play more BW than SC2 ^_^

I felt the same way about MMA, watching it grow from the most underground of underground sports into its popularity today (you're all TUF Noobs =D). Then I realized that as it becomes bigger, so does the quality of the sport. There will be more money for the players and thus more good players, etc. I think it's a good thing.
|
Well its certainly looking like the better bw and wc3 players are going to rape it up for at least a year. So you can still be pretty elitist.
|
when was scbw like that? overlooked, underappreciated, yes. Underground? No. Most WC3 players have at one point or another expressed their familiarity with the game, and even arenajunkies exploded with sc fans when beta came out.
|
I feel completely different. I'm actually excited how everyone is talking about SC2. I've talked to people who have never played or really cared about SC getting really excited about SC2, people who don't even like RTS say that SC2 looks really cool, and upon hearing about how I still play SC, they're sometimes like "Hey I hear Korea treats it like a sport" and I'm like "YES I FOLLOW IT." I find it very exciting that everyone has already embraced the game, from the teamliquid community all the way to the random newbs that don't know what a zergling is

I hear this quite a lot, but very close to 100% of the people I've talked to that play video games appreciate the greatness that is SC. Maybe not as much as the average TL poster, but most of them have played it, they've all had tons of fun with it, and although it's not their favourite game or they don't QUITE appreciate the intricacies of the game, they've had tons of fun with it in the past and completely understand how I love the game so much

I'm the same, after about a week of the beta I went back to playing mainly iccup, I win less in BW but still enjoy it more
|
Those who don't appreciate BW should be stuffed in a cubicle and try to get D+ on iccup.

i totally agree. a part of me is interested in the game but a part of me doesnt want to let go of BW.

Yeah... I've come to realize balance isn't everything... :/

SC2 won't ever give the same feeling BW gave to me. A looong time ago when I first figured out how to get my hands on all the progamer VOD's after I got cable high speed.. I remember watching xellos and boxer and nada play, on all these great old school maps.. and just wanting to get better and better! SC became a huge part of my life.. SC2 is never going to be able to do that unfortunately. T_T
I'll continue to play BW for the competitive side of it with friends, and probably play SC2 for the amazing UMS that will be comming out. :D

I'm beginning to wonder if TL is still primarily the mainstay for competitive BW/SC2 or has it just become the de facto SC2 site now for casual noobs and veterans alike, and which option I prefer...

Yup, I quite understand, I'm feeling pretty much the same way also about it

Actually TL is now the place where people only post blogs because they're afraid of getting banned.

Uhh... no. Good try though.
The reason I play SC still and haven't moved to SC2 is pretty simple: I like Starcraft. I don't like Starcraft 2. I gave it an honest-to-goodness try and I feel like Blizzard hasn't put any love into it. Of course the other reason is that the game is STILL IN BETA. I am perfectly content to wait for the finished product because the version they have out now is not very good. And by 'not very good' I mean not fun to play, which is what games are supposed to be about. Right?
Games are not supposed to be about who is going to go pro on release, or who is at the top of the ladder. They are not about chatting with my friends on WoW, or having a cool looking avatar that you earned by doing gimmicky missions. They are supposed to about fun.
So what is so fun about Starcraft? Haha.. Everything. I can honestly say that I like EVERYTHING about this game. I like the noises my drones make when I select them. I like that vultures and marines swear at me after a few clicks. I like watching zealots run away as I pelt them with mutalisk fire. I have yet to get bored of the music... but then... what is there to get bored of, really? This is without a doubt the deepest game I have ever played. It is such a genius construct that after 10 years of thousands of people playing it we are still marveled by new strategies.
At the core of it all that's what really counts; is Starcraft is not only fun but it challenges you. We all had the early days of struggling to beat the computer, or getting beat down online by Korean noobs. But if we liked the game we didn't let that stop us because it was still fun just to play.
Oh... and the campaign... I know for a fact that some of you guys just started playing because SC2 was announced. Thus, you have probably never touched the campaign or haven't for many years. I suggest you go beat it again because it is simply amazing. In fact, I would say unrivaled. The story, the characters, even how units are introduced, it's all just so perfect. I have never enjoyed a game's single player and multiplayer so much. And I think that it's because the people who made Starcraft, loved making it as much as I love playing it.
So where is the love in SC2? I don't see any. It feels hollow. Like it was made by a fan of the original. And if you really think about it, it was. We made SC2. Blizzard is so afraid of pissing us off that are catering to our wishes and looking to us to test their game instead of testing it out themselves. Anybody else see something wrong with that? We are not testers, we are gamers. Many people think that one covers the other but it really doesn't. We have no fucking clue how to balance a game. And the world is going to pay for it.
Blizzard has trusted some of us to give them our honest opinions on their latest creation. I realize my voice means nothing, but here are my thoughts: SC2 so far, is the worst game Blizzard has made since The Death and Return of Superman. It is not fun. People keep looking to unit changes to maintain balance, but it goes far beyond that. I could go on for hours about why the game won't work but I don't think anybody really cares. I have written enough as it is.
Blizzard, I implore you. Take it back to the drawing boards. Or at least take it out of beta and take a good look at what you have created. I always thought you guys were about the experience and not the money. But I am starting to see a side of you I don't like. I will not pay a damn cent for SC2 if you release it as it is (barring 'balance changes' made in beta of course). Just make a game that YOU as a company feel is the best you can offer and I know it will be awesome. If you have to take 2 more years to fix it than I don't care. I have waited so long already just to be disappointed...
EDIT: Sorry I forgot my point. Do I think I love SC more than most? Damn straight I do. Does that make me an elitist for having an opinion? Maybe. But I don't care what people label me because I care about the future of this game. I want SC2 to be a true sequel, not a follow-up. I want to fall in love again.
|
None of my friends have a beta key. They want it so bad. Out of the 15 people who want beta keys, none of them still play brood war. They never really appreciated it because it was "an old game with shitty ass graphics that only koreans play". This kind of offended me.
Some of my friends started playing brood war again with me but after a week or so they all kind of gave up and went back to their "awesome" FPS games. They don't even play good FPS games like Quake or CS. They play crappy FPS games that they think are the absolute best "cuz best graphics ever omg".
So to be totally honest, I think I'm going to be the only one of my friends that actually will still actually be playing Brood War and SC2 many years from now.

Yea but just think of the rapes we will be handing out to everyone LOL.

I enjoy BW WAY more than SC2 also but I still play both. You are really putting out a short sighted argument against SC2. How many times have you played it? If you have played it less than 10 times you arent used to it yet and cannot judge very strongly. Plus it's horribly imbalanced right now, but has potential to be a sick game.
