Well, I am currently debating the definition of the word via PM with someone. It all started from that "dopeman" thread. He insists that these days, dope pretty much only means heroine, and by saying that it actually just means "drugs" I am in fact confusing people. It's funny because I think the people who are most likely to agree with him are those who comprise the younger generations, which is also what TL is made up of. And yet, I still predict this poll will contradict what he says. So, lets see.
I thought it was just weed, but I just watched "The Departed" and.. They refered to dope as any drug (he knew drug deal was going on but wasnt sure which drug)
the hard thing about this poll is the demographic you are asking...very similar kind of people...probably a lot of people that spend a lot of time on the computer alone (nothing wrong with that because starcraft is awesome and worth it!) just saying that it's not like the same as asking random people on the street of different ages....

yeah I definitely agree it's not a very diverse sample of people hehe

yeah, considering right now the poll implies that DOUBLE the people think of dope as weed over heroine...which probably doesn't reflect the general population unless the people voting are past their 30s or 40s
heroine = female hero, not heroin, so you might wanna fix it
like all drug terminology it varies where you are... certainly, dope is most often taken as meaning heroin.
most of the people who call anything else dope are 40+ years old and generally have little exposure to any kind of drug culture... and even then it generally means buds. but yeah, pretty much anyone with the slightest exposure beyond DARE class as a kid doesn't call mary jane dope
im pretty sure dope refers to dopamine or some shit in heroin. you don't get dopesick on buds.

Weed has never been dope.
Heroin is closer to cocaine visually, so if I had to chose between the two it'd be heroin.
My wife said weed, meth, or crack.
So I'm choosing any drug.
dope definitely used to be slang for weed a few decades ago
heroin is most often brown b/c of impurities while cocaine is white...really surprises me you are old enough to be married and say that 'weed has never been dope'
Dope is a word I never hear, ever lol. Unless I'm talking to my dad or someone else who used to use drugs back in tha day, in which it normally just means weed.
But I was always under the impression that it was used for heroin, these days.
Dope is an old word for weed which has evolved to mean heroin. Recently, dope means cool. Dope is also a mild descriptor for someone who is acting stupid. "Don't be a dope." Remember the seven dwarfs?
There are many suggestions as to the origin of the word ‘doping’. One is that it is derived from ‘dop’ an alcoholic drink used as a stimulant in ceremonial dances in 18th century Southern Africa [1]. Another suggestion is that the word comes from the Dutch word ‘doop’ (a thick dipping sauce) that entered American slang to describe how robbers stupefied victims by mixing tobacco with the seeds of Datura stramonium [2], known as jimsonweed, which contains a number of tropane alkaloids, causing sedation, hallucinations and confusion [3]. By 1889, ‘dope’ was used in connection with the preparation of a thick viscous preparation of opium for smoking, and during the 1890s this extended to any stupefying narcotic drug. In 1900, dope was also defined as ‘a preparation of drugs designed to influence a racehorse’s performance’

Ok, well I'm also a super super nerd... so I don't know much about drugs. Not for lack of trying, just never had friends cool enough

i knew of a british person who called it dooping... maybe that, but definitely not dope lol
me and my friends up in canada always call weed dope, but i think its sort of a joke? In all honesty though i've always thought it was weed and all drugs. Never heard it for heroin..
It's used in different contexts and it varies from person to person. I find people less knowledgeable on drugs tend to just associate "dope" to all drugs however.
