So my girlfiend is pretty aware (maybe too aware) of my addiction to pro Starcraft, and my status as a jaedong-fanboy. For my birthday, she baked me probably the coolest cake i've ever seen.
the tyrant, in cake form
yes, those are chocolate hydras
the next day, she asked me if i posted the pictures on teamliquid yet. i'm a pretty lucky guy
-------
also, i'm going to be spending the next 6 weeks in sweden. my first stop is stockholm, but i plan on wwoofing it after that, and possibly doing some hiking and traveling to see the less frequented parts of sweden. does anyone have any recommendations of places i should go? must see cities or hiking trails? i'm pretty terrible at planning things so the entire trip is still pretty much in the air at this point
|
awesome cake and girlfriend imo ! long live the (cake) tyrant and your girlfriend! ;D

I'd show you around if you came to Karlstad. Best hiking is done in the north of sweden, in the mountains. You should definitely check out Gothenburg (although second biggest city) it's more "warm" than Stockholm. I really don't know, what do you want to do?
|
never eat that cake, thats awesome!
|
Lol dude your one lucky guy to have a girlfriend that is that accepting of your SC addiction .
^^ Sick ass cake, mail me a piece?
|
|
And I thought my girlfriend was supportive.
You and your girl are nothing short of awesome! Kudos!
|
If I had a cake like that i'd probably try and hang it on my wall. That's awesome~~!!

You sir, are one lucky bastard. Happy Birthday...gimme a slice? Please? ”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjF1bG5LUcs”
|
Happy birthday!
Now i have to force my gf to also bake me a cake with Flash in it
|
|
That's a nice cake, happy b-day!
What do you like to see when traveling? You say you want the less frequented places, but if you specify a little bit more I shure could help! I know alot about museums, art and I could tell you about my hometown (only 3-4 hours away from stockholm with alot of places to visit).
I usually spend time with the exchange students here (not watching starcraft though ), and our most common problem is that there is no typical swedish food around. When you've tried the standard meatballs and seen IKEA you've pretty much covered the basics. There are alot of traditional dishes but we seldom make them ourselves and even more seldom make them in restaurants, which usually only serve swedish variations of other countries food.
Feel free to PM if you have any specific questions!

The less frequested places in Sweden are less frquented for a reason, just stay in Stockholm Guess Öland is kinda pretty in the summer though.

If you're in sweden I require you to visit Julmust~ Also pretty ballin GF
|
You going to Sweden? I'd say Stockholm and Gothenburg is the coolest cities to visit, if you're going to Gothenburg let us know, quite a few SC gamers over here.
|
awesome cake, and as previously posted: what else are you interested in. if you're looking for hiking I'd really reccomen the far north parts of sweden. alot of hiking there and some really impressive views if you like nature.
|
Marstrand is a must in my opinion brought many friends there and they love it there are also some other small summer cities on the west coast maybe someone knows them better. Also Gotland-Visby is supposedly amazing in the summer.
|
What is with this influx of awesome cakes... and girlfriends that make them - I must find one. Happy belated birthday - lol.
(The detail on that cake is impeccable)

I am willing to bet that either a) you live in Stockholm, but didn't originally or b) used to live in Stockholm, but doesn't anymore.
Anyway, that cake is awesome, as is your girlfriend, by the sound of it. I'm still working on getting mine to watch Hyung Joon becomes a Progamer, but I figure that once she actually sees the first episode, she'll get addicted to the awkward cuteness that is Shark.
Also, congrats!
As for places to visit in Sweden, well, there are a lot of places worth visiting for different reasons. Stockholm is a really beautiful city in many places, although Gothenburg is definitely the friendlier of the two. Both have extensive archipelagos worth seeing, though.
Proper hiking is, as others have noted, best done in the mountains in the north. Something which I would really recommend if you have the time is to travel to Sarek and do at least a few days of hiking to get into the actual national park. If you're there early enough you will probably be in time to see the midnight sun as well, which I hear really is something if you're not used to it (I am pretty used to at least very light nights, if not outright midnight sun, coming from the northern parts of Sweden myself).
Still, Sarek is pretty damn far north, and I would probably not go hiking on my own, nor without some proper planning, if I were you. If you want to go hiking in the mountains, but find Sarek a bit too out of place, well, just go to the mountains further south. Not quite as impressive, not above the polar circle, but still very beautiful.
Are there any other things in particular that interest you? History? Architecture? Religion? Museums? Partying? Sightseeing? Medieval reenactments/festivals?
|
reminds me of incontrol and his gf xD
|
Looks awesome. She's a keeper
(Does she actually call you skronch too?)
|
Stockholm has everything you would ever want imo. Citylife + nature. Take the bus for 20 minutes from the city and it looks like this.
It's not so good if you wanna hike though, you should go north for that.

wow, really amazing cake!! lucky to me she dont participated in the cake contest...
if you are in sweden u can contact coltrane, he is traveling in many places around stockholm and he is very nice.

As for Sweden, I recommend visiting Göteborg, since you pretty much can't go wrong in that town

Medieval reenactments/festivals? thanks for the suggestions, Sarek looks incredible. definitely seems like something i want to do, but its pretty damn far north and i will be packing light; i probably don't have the equipment for the temperatures up there. I think mountains in the south are exactly what i'm looking for, do you have any recommendations?
also, I heard that there is a stockholm week on week#29, and the medieval festival after that. are either of those two worth seeing?
other than that i'd be most interested in seeing some good music. and meeting up and getting drinks with tl members of course
|
If you're referring to the medieval week in Visby, Gotland, that's definitely worth seeing. It may be a little complicated getting somewhere to sleep for a reasonable amount of money at this stage, although I've heard they are going to keep an old castle ruin open for people to sleep in the courtyard for relatively cheap.
If you want to hear some swedish folkmusic/general world music, you could check out the Urkult festival in Näsåker 5-7 of August. Apparently, they are organising a train ride from Stockholm and back again this year, with artist playing on the train. I'm sure that'll be a blast Expect endless amounts of barefoot hippies, a bunch of chill musicians and lots of love. I've been there a few times, and it's been very nice every time. Also, the place where they hold the festival is ridiculously beautiful.
Another music festival I've been to which also has a good atmosphere is Arvikafestivalen in Arvika (15-17 of July), which has more of a electronica/metal focus. Generally a dirtier, more gritty festival, it's nonetheless in general full of awesome people. Apparently VNV Nation is going to play this year (they were awesome three years ago), as well as Combichrist, Robyn and S.P.O.C.K (and of course a whole bunch of other artists).
Trekking in the southern parts of the mountains is not something that I've done very much, I'm afraid, Saxnäs being pretty much the furtherest south I've been doing such things, but as long as you can find some actual 'tundra' (kalfjäll) it's probably going to be worth it. No guarantees though
As for meetups.. I'll be in Gothenburg around 6-10 of August, or so (not quite all planned yet), so if people there are up for it, I could go for a beer at Bishop's Arms or so some night
Guess I made another textwall, but hopefully you can at least extract some kind of useful info

Boat from Stockholm is the most convenient and cheep, way to get there.
edit: fixed one of my embarrassing spelling errors.

Epic cake!
I live in Stockholm, and I'm a frequent clubber. I enjoy mostly house, techno etc.. If that is your preference I can give you some recommendations.
As of now, I'm going to "Thaiboat", really nice on Sundays
