SPOILERS!!!!!
- - - - - - - - - - -
Last night, or more accurately, this morning, at 12AM I, along with around 15 of my friends, piled into a movie theater, dished out an additional $3 for 3D effects that no one cares about, and sat back to watch the film adaptation of one of our most beloved anime/cartoons (I understand there is contention on this particular issue). Avatar: The Last Airbender was sure to be wrought with epic psuedo-mystical martial arts madness and insanity, and we had been eagerly anticipating this night for nearly a year since word got round that Aang and the crew were making the jump to the big screen. When we heard that the director was to be none other than M. "What a twist" Night Shyamalan, we grew fearful after having such epic failures as "The Happening" and "The Village" to his name. But, how could he mess up? With such an enormous and unique setting, maybe this tale had a Shyamalan Proof Vest? And then it happened. As we watched, eyes glistening with anticipation, my group of friends and myself finally figured it out; just exactly what WAS the big twist. Simply put, the movie SUCKED.
Then, today, I got to thinking, "Maybe I missed something...was all my hyping just too much for the real thing to live up to?" and so, I come to you TL, I humbly seek your opinion on the matter.
Did Avatar: The Last Airbender, suck?

You are not going to achieve anything with that poll.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I absolutely loved the series. Naturally, I was pretty disappointed after seeing the previews.
|
It has a 6% on rotten tomatoes. I'm not even going to bother with it now.

All I have to say is:
IT CANNOT BE UNSEEN.

just to give a better picture of how bad that is.
There have been 77 reviews. 6% means that only five reviewers have a positive review of the movie. Only five out of 77.
M. Night Shylalamnalanlaman what have you done.

I just want to say a big FU M.Knight Shyamalalasshole for ruining such a great series.

I dont know the series at all, so I wasnt really looking forward to this piece of his. After the awesome Unbreakable, and the decent Sixth Sense and Signs I was always thinking movies like The Village, Lady In The Water and The Happening were flukes, not the real faces of Shyamalan, but its starting to look like those first two weren't... It really makes one wonder how can a director go down such a path. Is it just money, that makes him not put in real artistic creative effort? Or is he pressured by trying to appeal to the masses(/studios)? Being afraid to leave his "signature" twists and buildups, and surrendering the rest of his movies to that, which loses the element of surprise and originality because he is infamous for them by now already? Or maybe he just got lucky a few times and he's lost the magic touch, and that was it? Actually, thinking about his worse movies now, its really not the effort thats missing. I think by now he has a basically flawed approach on what would people enjoy in a movie, and he wont stop until studios stop giving him films to write/direct.
I won't spend any money on Avatar, but now I actually wonder if its even worth my time if someone brings it along on dvd, or should i just spare myself an other disappointment...

He ruined one of my favorite series ever. I'm pissed.

I absolutely love the series itself, and would HIGHLY recommend it anyone with a mild interest in good animated shows, but even on DVD the film is just....not worth the 2 hours and some minutes of your life it would eat up. Go stab yourself in the face instead. It feels about the same, and it's faster.

Why is Lady in the Water and The Village such bad movies? I always enjoyed those movies!

...so, what did you think of the new SW Trilogy? xD Seriously though, they just didn't do it for me, at all.

I don't get how this ruins the whole series for you guys. Just act like you didn't see the damn movie, and even if you did its probably nothing even similar to the series, like most movies about popular tv series that are made to movies.
|
Maybe if the Movie could have been more intense it would've been better, but they had to keep the rating at PG

It's not that it ruined the series for us, it's that we love this series so very much, and the epicness that should have been the first movie....well let me put it like this:
Imagine you're reading Harry Potter, and the Seventh Book rolls around, the anticipation in the air is palpable as you slowly leaf through the opening pages and get read to feast on the "IT" of what you've been waiting for for nearly a decade; the culmination, the climax, the coup de grace. However, instead of words, there's just a massive shit. Hot, slightly moist, and steaming, sitting smack dab in the middle of where the first chapter should be. That's how we feel.

Dammit, I was hoping it would be good.

You guys know why M Night Shyamalan decided to do the movie? He said he saw his daughter dressed up as one of the characters from Avatar during Halloween, and he learned that it was a popular series, so he decided to make a movie on it. WTF? He was not a fan from the beginning, and decided to make the movie because realized kids liked it? I saw him say this in a interview on TV long time ago, so I have no actual source to give you. But when I first heard this, and realized this is the same guy that made those horrible movies that people spent good money to watch, I went ballistic. I am thinking to myself how the fuck is some dude that made strange ass movies going to make a full featured live action film of the Avatar? With a empty mind and money obviously.
Sorry I am a fan of the animated series.

Terrible do not see this movie, I have no experience with the series but it would only serve to infuriate me further. ITS GARBAGE. It demands me not to think.
EDIT: To put my disgust in better words, my girlfriend forced me to go see Twilight Eclipse the day before, and I'd would have rather watched Twilight again than this movie.

Okay Dragonball Z was actually terrible in a funny way, so I don't regret going to see that (especially since 5 friends and I were the only ones in that tiny movie theater and we were laughing obnoxiously and laying in the aisles and whatnot). The Last Airbender, though.....

The whole movie was just put together bad. Really wrecked the series :/

Okay, when you put it that way I can see why you feel that way :p

LOL @ critic response.
The current national priorities should be as follows: reduce carbon emissions and stop funding the films of M. Night Shyamalan.
It's rare to see a film so choppily edited, poorly scripted and spastically directed that you can barely understand what you're watching.
Please, Hollywood, if there's to be another Airbender movie, hand the job to some efficient hack, and not to a once mesmerizing artist who's lost his way.
|
Aw, sucks to hear that you didn't like this movie. I actually considered going to see it, which in itself is quite astonishing, since I swore to never see another M. Night movie again after watching The Village at the theater. Which is funny because it was the first, and most likely now last, movie of his I ever saw.
Oh well, at least now I'll save $13.
|
I lol'd at Day9's response:
Avatar: The Last Airbender is probably my favorite TV show of all time. Too bad they never made a movie out of it.
|
Until I heard of this movie I had not even heard of the story whatsoever. I haven't seen it so I can't say either way. But with Shyamalan as director I'm sure there is a massive blunder and plenty of plot holes all over the place.

After the first preview, I thought the movie was targeted to 9-12 year olds.
I guess it might be one of those movies that's so bad it's good. The kind you watch with your friends at drunken parties.

soo. not gonna see this. thx rofl

Thanks for the warning guys, I really wanted to see this, looks like I will pass on it now.

The series is one of my all time favourite shows and this is extremely disappointing. I'm really sick of these cashed up corporate assholes who aren't fans in any way ruining the shit out of my favourite intellectual properties to make a quick buck. First it was michael bay with transformers, now this bullshit with avatar. What next? By the looks of it: starcraft, warcraft and diablo will be the next ones to go at the hands of Activision's execs.

"The Last Airbender" review by Ebert: "Let's hope it is". lol
He particularly didn't like the character changes from the original series. Will skip this movie. Would rather watch Inception.
|
I have no interest in seeing this movie at all, but it's not surprising it got panned. Shyamalan was terrible other than the sixth sense, and that was only probably because Bruce Fucking Willis was in it.
|
Surprisingly I've never seen a Shyamalan movie Don't plan to either
|
I have no idea how faithful the movie is to the series or if child actors were even necessary, but they certainly didn't help the cause. However I usually take that with a grain of salt as most children actors are terrible. What I couldn't ignore was M. Night's storytelling failure.
+ Show Spoiler +Again, without knowing anything about the series, several of the scenes seemed unimportant to the main story of the Airbender. The ice princess romance seemed forced and she was such a new character that the audience had no time to emotionally invest in her. When she died I didn't care one way or the other.
I used to like M. Night, but he seems to be digging a deeper and deeper hole.

One thing i have to ask after seeing this movie, what was that dragon thing that told aang stuff, I watched some of the show, but i still have no idea what this dragons purpose was at all, can someone please explain it to me?
|
I heard they might be makeing a Neon genesis evangelion live action movie.... after seeing what they did with dragon ball and this im scared D:
|
I haven't watched many M. Night movies, but I thought Unbreakable was pretty good with its great cast of Jackson and Willis. The Village was an interesting watch as well, but they probably shouldn't have advertised it as a horror movie and attracted the swarms of teens that were expecting a modern day gore fest.
Btw, can you explain what you actually thought about the movie "sucked?" Honestly, I'm not going to watch it either way (never even heard of it before the movie came out), but it just feels like you're telling us to dismiss it as a shitty movie.
|
This movie was absolutely amazing! I saw it at 12:01 and I think it's one of the best movies of the year. The acting was incredible. Noah Ringer is definetly going to be the next Leonardo DiCaprio. He definetly fit the roll of Aang just like I remembered in the animated series. The special effects where mind-blowingly cool. Definetly what I hoped for in such an epic war of the elements. The only thing that confused me was....in theory, water should destroy fire. I know a lot of people that didn't like it, but they are entitled to there own opinion. A lot of people didn't like Transformer movies, but I enjoyed them. I can't wait for this movie to come out on blu-ray. Any news on a sequel yet?
