This is something that I was thinking about last night during the stream, and no this is not the result from the harassments from last night. If I am thinking about this issue just because two people bickered at each other on stream, I might as well as quit life because I would be an impatient retard.
'You are bad. No offense'
No offense taken milkis, but that made me realize something.
Whenever I translated in the stream, I only tried to translate quick and fast. I do not even know if the translations made sense because all I tried to do was translate few words that went through my head ASAP.
This has made me think about past few months. Finally, I told that I have never provided quality translations during live streams, in my honest opinion. Could I have done better? Possibly, or maybe I just suck at it. Practice makes it perfect, sure, but there's absolutely no reason for me to bother 100+ people from chatting if I'm just a burden.
Like it or not, there's no reason for me to translate. Why did I do it? Because I love the TL community. But as I think more and more about it, I think I'm just a burden in the stream, screaming my lungs out through keyboard, and just blocking all of you from chatting
Poll: So should I keep doing the live translations?Yes (64) 94% No (4) 6% 68 total votes Your vote: So should I keep doing the live translations? (Vote): Yes (Vote): No
If you have a solid reason on either of these answers, comments would be appreciated.
Please refrain from last night's events, because this has absolutely nothing to do with it

The only issue with some of the live translations is that sometimes you're just translating what we can see. As it was explained to me, there's one guy who simply says what's happening and two people who explain what what's happening means. If the translators focused on these things rather than what's happening on screen i feel like some of the perceived quality issues would be resolved.
Keep doing it, though, I really enjoy the translations.
|
SNM, same goes with me. But I do it because of the good will and my care for the TL community. I feel ya, there were moments I wanted to quit, there were times I had to just say "screw it, I'm done". But something about this community and the streams and the people draws me back to come back and translate once more on the next day.
Am I a good translator? Of course not, I've often stated that mine isn't perfect and yours aren't perfect. However, all these people in the stream are way worse situation than us, where we can understand at least 50% of Korean but these people don't at all, a complete 0%. Some of them don't know the first thing about Korean and when I think about it, I feel awed by their motivation and commitment of watching these games that is so so so foreign and completely different yet keeping it up with us.
The choice is up to yours. But you already been proven beneficial to translate in stream along with me and abacus in the past and even now. Don't get caught up what others say because as long as there is some small form of lights of appreciation, that should give you hope as well. Nonetheless, people will always remember of your contributions and even in the way future, you can always remember of the bright glory times of translating stream in super fast mind power.
*Edit* That being said, there are definitely unnecessary people in the thread that needs to be taught a lesson to know respect of doing this.

I feel like as long as you can capture the gist of what the commentators are saying (which is what I gather from your post), even if your translations are "bad" compared to the polished, careful article or interview translations, they help a lot during the game. I've personally enjoyed live translations during streams, and felt they really kept me up to speed.
Also, about half of the people you are blocking from chatting are spamming troll/hyperfanboy comments (and 1% are filling the whole chatbox with <3 LUNCHABLES!!!!!). *most* of the time I feel open chat is fairly unproductive, so in those cases blocking chat is good riddance.

Since it's LIVE, translations don't have to be eloquently and professionally written. As long as translations aren't completely wrong where you translate wrongly 'yes' for 'no' or something like that, a general idea of what they're talking about is fine with me.

You don't think about the 15% but the other 85% that's better. And I think these posts and poll say themselves of your opinion of the translation.

IMO a bad translation is better than no translation.

It's not that the translations are "bad", per say. There is a terrible tendency for you two to translate really mundane things rather than actual interesting things.
He got Zerglings in the base? People can see that. He's going BBS? Well... we're not blind. These things aren't important. The Korean commentators are valuable not because they're telling you what's going on, but because 1) they provide interesting background, 2) they provide a more complete picture of the game, 3) they talk about strategies the players should be considering ie what the players need to do to come back, etc. No one cares about AHHHH PLAGUE or anything like that -- it just makes you sound like retards.
Just be more careful with what you're bringing to the table. It seems as if you both miss the important stuff and concentrate on the trivial nonsense of the commentators which makes you guys kinda useless since we can see everything you're saying... about 5 seconds before it's actually translated.
Also, I don't see why you can't have an open chat while translating. If you need "peace" while translating then seriously get the hell over yourself. The thing that annoys the most is a certain user's desire for "NO CHATTING WHAT SO EVER" while translating. That's not even needed. If you want to ensure your translations want to be read, then change your font color and bold/underline it. No need to restrict chat for whatever reason since that's honestly the best part about having chats during the game.
*Edit* That being said, there are definitely unnecessary people in the thread that needs to be taught a lesson to know respect of doing this.
If you're demanding respect, you'll likely never get it. If you want respect, then stop martyring every other time someone says something in the chat and just man up and translate. Don't be a whiny little idiot who constantly complain about stuff. Why should you even be considered a translator when you ragequit every stream and give up translating 3 minutes in? -_-

I'm sure you can get every single second detail of what's being said in Korean and can fully translate everything into English in the exact same time.
And I suppose everyone in the stream can read and follow all those translation with all these other random messages and spam. And the scrolling since the chat isn't necessary dead with over 1000 people.

And thanks Milkis for that last comment before QS interrupted.

everyone settle down
you're all better translators than me

I really really appreciate the translators here as they bring the culture of e sports to us foreigners, however,
But as I think more and more about it, I think I'm just a burden in the stream
Is an attitude that doesn't deserve coddling. A fragile ego is overall, just boring.
Ask yourself
"If I couldn't understand the commentating of something I enjoyed, would I be appreciative to the guy who could help a bit, but decided it might be a bother, or to the guy who gave it his best shot even if it wasn't the best?"

Milkis, what the fuck. Stop ruining the community. It doesn't matter if you translate more or better. That doesn't give you the right to go around calling these guys bad translators. If you notice that some people are translating poorly, then pm them and give advice instead of publicly ridiculing them on stream.

I agree that Milkis is kind of being a massive cock in general, but when he gives legitimate, excellent advice about why their translations aren't great (his first post in this thread) and then QS comes in gets all defensive, it suggests to me that he's probably tried to give advice before and got a similar reaction.
Obviously I don't know for sure, but that's just what it seems like.

^ I think you are right.
I really enjoy the translators here but I didn't know it was such a cock fight. Quality of work speaks for itself and people know if there getting a bag of runny shit. I dont know why any of these guys are getting all uppity.
Just as annoying as jocks in regular sports. Too bad.

I probably should apologize for that, since I do tend to be blunt when it comes to these kinds of things. To be fair, I've never been any good at sugarcoating anything I say =(
I should also apologize for "ruining the community" because this comes right after someone gave me a similar statement. I honestly don't have a legit excuse because it seemed to have slipped off my mind soon after that someone told me about it. I do apologize for causing a rift again and, I'm also making this statement public in hopes that I'll avoid doing it in the future.

reason why i'm voting no (and was always against live translations, unless absolutely necessary or important info) was that 90% of the stuff is actually not worth translating at all.
"Oh he's getting a defiler" "ZERGLING RUNBYY!!!!!!!!!" "AAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!"
no offense to those who put in hard work, but i think that live translation in a stream is one effort that i feel is kinda being put to waste, because the stuff you guys translate are mostly rather obvious stuff. not about quality or whatsoever, just feel that that effort you guys put in can be reallocated to somewhere else more lasting and effective.

If you think about it, these guys are posting the obvious things exactly because it is obvious to them. If you're trying to understand what the commentators are saying and translate under a tight time constraint, it becomes quite understandable that proxy rax is what comes to mind first.
So milkis and kona are right in that the op probably shouldn't be doing live translations but try subs or post game interviews which let them improve vocab & get familiar with sc lingo.

Of course keep it up! It seems the only people who are being critical are those who don't even need the translations. As long as you're not mis-representing them, translations are always appreciated.

Milkis man, just let it go. From my years long experience of streaming, I've learned that people really do like these translations. Even if they're mostly stuff we can see, some of the times you get stuff that you wouldn't have noticed.
People enjoy it, they really do. And I've grown to notice that people enjoy translations more than having the freedom to talk. So just let it go.

The last time I've trolled QS out of doing translations was at least a week ago. I've stopped that after I talked with Mystlord and a few others about it.
SNM asked me how his live translations where during livestream chat, and that was just my response at that time. Yes, it was blunt, and I realize now that I could have been a lot less direct about it.

man QS, why do you get in heated fights with people in every thread i see you in stop caring what others say on the internet, theres seriously no point gettin mad every time someone has something bad to say about you
|
I voted yes... but honestly, whenever the game starts I watch full-screen so I'm not even looking at chat (unless I need to figure out who is what color).
The only time I would care for translations is pre-game or post-game, because the commentators might say something about league standings, team politics, player history, etc.
These are things I would be interested in because they aren't so obvious to American fans like myself. But then again, I'm not even sure if commentators talk about them...? since I usually don't see translations of pre-game and post-game commentary...

I was talking to quickstriker, not you, thats why i said QS sorry that I wasnt clear D: I havent seen a lot of your posts but I do very much appreciate the work you do, especially because I cant watch livestream from bangladesh so I just sit in the chat for the LR

As long as your translations are remotely closed and manage to correctly portray the idea of the speaker I think it's fine. I personally enjoy them. And it's not like it's "blocking" anything else, the people in the stream's chat rooms are constantly spamming boring non-sense anyways... At least 90% of the time there is nothing interesting going on in the stream's chat so your translations are more then welcomed, please keep it up.
|
I voted yes and I think tons of people here are missing the Reaganesque larger picture. How many people log into chat for one of Roffle's or Mystlord's streams? Usually its around 100 from what I can tell, and usually about half of those people chat frequently. So that's 50 people. You're letting the 50 people who log into chat dictate the whole argument. Usually the streams have at least 1000 people watching. I suspect most of them prefer the translations to the general chat (since they don't even bother logging into the chat, they obviously don't want to participate in it).
I tend to lurk both here and on the streams, though I think I'm logged in on them now. I really like the translations, whether its the mundane things or the strategy things. The mundane things help to put into words the excitement I hear in the commentators voices. It doesn't matter if I can see exactly what they're saying, I still like it especially in the exciting moments. When there's lulls in the action maybe focus more on the strategy things they're talking about, but that's not a huge deal. I try to catch most of the big events live specifically for the translations.
I watched the VODs of Flash vs Effort because I can't usually be up at 5:00 am and it just wasn't the same without the translations. I found myself almost falling asleep while watching them even though I wasn't tired when I started.
I listen to English commentators when I watch sports on TV and usually almost nothing they say adds valuable information to the event. Commentating is part of the experience and being able to understand the commentating makes me feel much more invested in the games.

-_- I'm not demanding respect from you to me, I'm asking you to be more mindful and respectful of the people who are doing their work voluntarily. You clearly don't get it don't you.
Then why don't you take over our roles and translate for all of us? I'm sure you can get every single second detail of what's being said in Korean and can fully translate everything into English in the exact same time. I was simply giving you advice. It's kinda funny how you constantly turn this into "WHY DONT YOU DO IT THEN?". I'm pretty sure other people will agree my time translating is better spent on other things ;P Wanna talk about switching roles? Don't even start lol. I don't see your advice as "advice" here. You think we don't know that? You think we don't know our bad our translation is when clearly SNM stated it on the OP? I only replied b/c your advice isn't advice but you want to make it into more of a shitstorm by replying. As for switching roles, let's talk when you do what I do in my entire life besides being on TL. Then I'll live as "Milkis" for a day and we can talk then.
1. You get defensive whenever someone say something bad about you
2. It's not sugarcoated or anything, but he actually gives out useful advices. Like what Milkis and Kona said, a lot of the stuff you translated seems unnecessary. I saw useful stuff too, so i think skipping the AHHHH PLAYGUUU stuff and translate the other parts would cut time and provide a better. more useful live translation as well. The no-chat part is also pretty annoying. I find myself going to grobyc's more and more often, but maybe that's just me.
3. Your last statement fking irks me. Is what you're trying to say, is that you are busy with your life and you don't have time? Like you said before, you VOLUNTEER. If you feel like you don't have time, then cut down what you do, rather then just continue doing the same thing and get defensive whenever someone criticized the quality. TL appreciates contributions, however small they might be. "Let's talk when you do what I do in my entire life besides being on TL. Then I'll live as "Milkis" for a day and we can talk then" is just plain old martyrdom fucking bullshit, and it's not even good bullshit. Space your time. Do what you can. Don't go "OMG nobody asked me" or ragequit live translation every so often.

SNM is cool tho, he holds the fort.

I thought quickstriker called it quits

Definitely keep translating man, I really appreciate what you're doing. (I voted yes, btw).
Anyways, just putting this idea out there, but when you feel that the commentators are being redundant or pointing out the obvious, try talking about something different about the game like "IF so and so does this right now, or if so and so did this back then then the game would be like this."

Is SNM gonna be live translation tonight?

It breaks my heart to see threads like this one

The only solution is an 8 way Translator FFA on BGH. Hmm, I do recall the last person saying this got warned/banned though. Buttttttt, that would be a nice way to reconcile since all the parties involved seem rather level headed considering the conflict.

Having translators like you is like having subtitles on anime. IT IS NEEDED! ^^ Don't let the haters get to you, they're all just jealous

So like, what's the point of this thread if you're just gonna do "what you felt right" and say that we have no appreciation for contributors?

I never said that you all have no appreciation for contributers. It was directed at few people, yet it sounded like I said to everyone.
I might have sounded cocky, but it was a word of advice to people who doesn't appreciate contributers. People should be granted that there are people here trying to keep things going. I'm just a stupid translator imo. Take me out of the picture and you still have great stream from Mystlord's. No huge impact.
