I've heard muggings/robberies are significantly more common in Central/South American countries than elswhere ... is this true? (I've heard this from tourist blogs etc.) also, was this your first mugging?

How about instead of beating the living daylights out of armed attacker, just let it go, and be thankful that he wasnt hurt? I know it seems unfair, but thats life. Start believing in karma or something if you want revenge, dont push your luck. I'm glad you're OK funkie. How are you feeling mentally about this hole thing? By the time he mugged me I was calm, and just kept on walking, when I finally realized that I was mugged, an adrenaline rush came into me, and I was like sort of shaking a bit but not too much, I got a hold of myself and well, what gone it's gone.

I've always wanted to kick the gun out of someone's hand and do some crazy prime monkey chan moves. Or just punch him in the face =P Sucks about your phone, but hey as long as you're covered and do frequent back ups (copy to pc/lap/flash drive/w/e) its really not too bad.

Recently witnessed 2 petty theif/robberies, well sort of... only saw the guy running and a girl behind him yelling that he stole her phone. This was in the subway station about half-an hour after rush hour, I was on the opposite side in the subway car. Pretty he got taken down because there was only a single exit/entrance at that station and he had to run all the way from the other side, picked the wrong place to steal. Then 2 weeks ago I saw a very brief scene, the cashier chasing someone carrying a plastic bag across the street, probably bought something to hide what he stole. Unfortunately for the idiot he ran across to the night club, which there were 2 dudes and a bouncer outside. About 2 seconds later I turn the other way and saw a police vehicle speeding down the street. Probably ending quickly, he had no chance, it was about 11 at night I think.

First of all, he's like 25, barely a kid. young but not a kid. second, what does being asian have anything to do with this topic? are you saying if the dude was 60 and wasn't asian, that you would do something? because there was already a case like that in toronto where an elderly guy got his wallet robbed, once again on the subway; 50 people around him and still no one did anything even when he called out for help.

I've never had a gun to my head, but last year on Thanksgiving day (well, Canadian thanksgiving, so Columbus Day) I got robbed at knife point. I also have to say that the situation didn't really scare me... more disturbing than anything. What got me was just feeling helpless, unable to help myself. I will never forget how it feels to have a cold blade touch your throat, but i'm alright these days. The guy took my iPod touch, my phone, my wallet (with about ~50 CDN in it)... I never did buy another Touch, I grabbed a Nano instead. The important thing is that you are safe, Funk.

Well I know you're asian, which is why I probably added that bit in about your cousin. That and I found it annoying how you tried to insinuate that Canadians aren't nice because they fell victim to the bystander effect and didn't try to get your cousins iphone back. Of all things, an iphone, and not even your own iphone, but your cousin's. You'd probably hold a grudge against Canadians if it were you. Anyway, if he didn't put up a fight for it (or if he did) and couldn't hold onto it, you honestly expect someone else to come to his rescue? Considering most people's phones are 1/3 of the price? Other than that, it really isn't too relevant to the topic. However, people are psychologically more inclined to feel empathy for members of their own race, so maybe it is a factor. If the person was 60, I think I would help him if it meant me not getting too hurt and if it was over something I deemed important. If it was a over something ridiculous like an iphone or ipad, then fuck no. A person's wallet...it would honestly depend on my first impression of the old person. If I've had some sort of interaction (even just observing their demeanor) with the person prior, and if it was anything better than neutral, then probably yes. If not, I think it would really depend on subconscious psychological factors. But with your 25 year old male cousin and his iphone, I honestly wouldn't give a shit. I'd imagine the feeling would be mutual. edit: and stop with your anecdotes, I'm sure I could dig up many cases of people coming to someones aid, as well. get your fucking chip off your shoulder.
