I'm sure there's some people on TL looking forward to tonight's show! For those of you who don't know what Top Chef is, it's a cooking show whose contestants are eliminated each episode until a Top Chef is crowned. Two challenges are typically featured in each episode. First is the "quickfire" challenge which gives you immunity in the elimination challenge (usually a very fast time-constrained challenge), and the elimination challenge which is exactly as it sounds. I can't write enough to do this show justice, but I'm sure one of the responses might be able to help out. Anyway, the All-Star season kicks off tonight, and favourites from past seasons (no winners) are back in action to compete yet again.
+ Show Spoiler [Fantasy TC rules] + +1 pt winning quickfire +1 pt top 3 of the elimination challenge +1 pt winning the elimination challenge (winner would get 2 pts total) -1 pt bottom 3 of the elimination challenge +5 pts final 3 of the entire thing +5 pts winning the entire thing (season champion would get 10 pts total)
ANTI-TEAM: -2 pt win the elimination challenge +1 pt bottom 3 of elimination challenge +6 pt 17th/18th +4 pt 15th/16th +2 pt 13th/14th +0 pt 11th/12th -2 pt 9th/10th -4 pt 7th/8th -6 pt 5th/6th -8 top 4 Extra -12 pt if anti-team member wins it all (i.e. you suck)
Cast:
6th to 8th (Group C) Mike Isabella: top 7 Jamie Lauren: top 7 Dale Talde: top 6 Tre Wilcox: top 8
4th to 5th (Group B) Elia Aboumrad: top 4 Stephen Asprinio: top 5 Jennifer Caroll: top 4 Tiffany Derry: top 5 Antonia Lofaso: top 4 Spike Mendelsohn: top 5 Fabio Viviani: top 4, FF
Finalists (Group A) Richard Blais: finalist Tiffani Faison: finalist Carla Hall: finalist Dale Levitski: finalist Angelo Sosa: finalist Casey Thompson: finalist, FF Marcel Vigneron: finalist
Team: Two of each group A, B, C. Anti-team: Any two contestants.
The high stakes forum of 2p2 had this going on, so I tweaked the system a little bit. There will be nothing on the line because I hear that spoilers are available for the first couple episodes. Anyone can enter. If there's enough interest, I will update this with a running score total of each contestant (after I've seen the episode). Good luck! Your team should consist of 6 members, and your anti-team should be 2 members. Sorry for the short notice. I know you all browse TL like mad anyway.

I can't pick a team since I only started watching the series in DC, but thanks for the heads up that it's starting again. I lost track of it.

Yay for fantasy pools!
Marcel Vigneron Richard Blais Fabio Viviani Tiffany Derry Tre Wilcox Mike Isabella
Jennifer Caroll Jamie Lauren
I now have a vested interest in a show I've never seen before! Wilcox fighting!

Somewhat OT:
I really disliked Angelo Sosa, but at the same time, I felt he deserved the win over Kevin. Maybe if he didn't get sick...?

iron chef america is hit or miss depending on the episode.
Chopped is terrible
hells kitchen is watched purely for the dramalama

I used to really like Chopped, then it got really predictable. To the point where you almost expect the person who's winning to fuck up somehow.

Nope, there's definitely 18 chefs. Super! I'll probably have to watch this tomorrow though =[

Season 6 is by far my favorite season of Top Chef. I wish they got Bryan or Kevin in All-Stars, but Jennifer is good too. Mike I is..well at least he's funny.

Just watched the first episode. This may be one of my favorite seasons. I love the swagger, cockiness, and trash talk/banter that they all show. The editing is great as usual, and with every chef being good from the start, it's going to be extremely competitive from the start. My pick to win this season is Angelo.
edit: Also, great idea for the first elimination challenge... remaking the dish that knocked you out in their previous season

Also, couple lol worthy moments in the show, but loved the judge and chef comments about how Spike handled the frozen scallops.

Terrrrrrible thing for stephen though. He was the only one who had to make multiple dishes.
Tre got knocked out for like 2, dale talde for 2. Just bleh. One guy having to make 3 was mean. Let alone dishes he didn't make the first time around haha

Oh oops if your anti-team gets top 3 turns out you don't lose points. Since nobody had the winner in their anti-team, I'm going to revise that so it's -2 for the winner of the elimination. That should have no effect on the standings or how people chose teams. Sorry.

lolol, yea, but he probably is one of the weaker chefs there, so wouldn't have even felt bad if he got eliminated. Tre's comment about Stephen was funny though - 'Macy day parade'.

Ah man, so sad I missed this. Well, even though I know how it went, I can say my team would have been:
C: jamie, tre B: jen, antonia A: richard, angelo
Anti-Team: stephen, fabio
Group B is just odd. For a bunch of top 4/5 chefs, I don't really like anyone here. Jen will probably defeat herself and everyone else is kinda meh. On the whole, I think the chefs in Group C are better.
I know my anti-team might seem fishy but stephen should be an automatic lock for anyone who remembers season 1 or watched that holiday special. The guy has always been more of a front man/restaurateur than an actual chef.
My choices for the other bottom dweller was between Tiffany D., Fabio, and Spike. Spike might not be the best chef but he plays the game well. Both Tiffany and Fabio's food always seem rather lackluster and so it's a coin flip for me. I guess you can chop this up to a combo of personal bias and first episode influence.

I just burned though Top Chef season 1 in like a day and now I'm working through seasn 2. Padma is like 5 billion times better than season 1's host katie. Katie was so monotone, I thought at some point she was just reading it off a card or a screen in the background.
Plus padma is hot/pretty.
/edit also if Marcel (dude with Edward hair) participated in a Top Chef season that came out after twilight, he'd win for sure.

Yeah I'm watching past seasons that I never watched in the first place. Cursing myself for not putting Stephen on anti-team. You can join in btw, I agree with your reasoning but I'll just give you -1 (you said the decision to put Fabio on anti-team was a toss-up, so you shouldn't get that point).

This is also on Hulu btw!

i didn't know what to make of angelo because his competition that season seemed so weak. both of them seem kinda crazy, marcel's experience and technique i hope will trump the focus and competitiveness of angelo.

btw, thought there was going to be a head to head cook off with tom this episode, sorely disappointed

honestly dude. With my knowledge as a cook and of injuries in a kitchen. Jamie should have been sent home for leaving. Fabio broke his finger and kept cooking in season 5, and as all those chefs said just wrap it and keep going.
I've taken the tip of a finger off never went to a hospital, and god knows the other cuts I've done where cauterizing or just wrapping in gauze and covering with a glove have happened. She should have been sent home on that. Competing for 250k and you get two stitches? come on.
I honestly do think jen deserved to stay based on what we saw.
To quote bourdains blog
"That said? I don't have a lot of sympathy for Jamie -- who deserted the front lines (all too happily, it seemed) in order to have TWO stitches put in. Just about any line cook I ever knew would have gone for the Vince Lombardi option of "spit on it and run a lap" -- at least until the end of the shift. And when you're competing for a quarter million dollars? Most would cauterize even a sucking chest wound with a hot spoon."

there's no way they're going to let jen stay after she basically ranted at the judges, that's undermining their credibility and opinions. if they let her stay after that it's basically encouraging anyone to talk back and defend. i thought it was pretty disrespectful for her to just contradict them like that, and her behavior really stood out and saved some of the other bottom chefs this time.
angelo probably would have won his season if he wasn't sick at the finale, bad luck.
|
As for Jen's ranting, I think it didn't have too much influence on the decision because her food was clearly bad. Jamie should've definitely went home, especially considering she had been paired with Jen ;o~~
|
Well, that sucked for my team.
Jen... self-destructing a little early. Suppose to defeat yourself after you rack up a few points.
Does Jamie even care about the competition? The whole stitch incident aside, she doesn't look like she even wants to be there.
Should have went Dale instead of Jamie meh.

Guess I'll tally up too.

Antonia 1, -1, 1
Jen 0, -1
Richard 1, 2, 1 Angelo 2, 2, 1
Anti-
Stephen 1, 0, 5 Fabio 1, 0, 1
And an overall -1 means I have a total of 17. Regretting my choice of Lauren over Dale more and more.
I think Spike has been the most surprising so far; at least point wise if not for his cooking.

one reason I really like blais is because of his cooking philosophy:
"Hopefully, molecular gastronomy is an extension of great simple ingredients, not a replacement for them."
Too many chefs just go hardcore molecular gastronomy; I'm all for it, but when you have 20 courses of frozen foams, you just want some real food.
