Technically I just turned 22 today in KST time. (it's funny b.c it's still 7:50am Thursday 20th)
Instead of writing a whole story, I'm just gonna get to the point...
Is it just me/our family who doesn't celebrate birthdays(like partying, giving out presents etc..?) or are there others? (We still eat cakes though)
I'm not really bragging/whining, its just I cant remember when was the last time i actually got any presents and I'm not sure is that a good or bad thing.(as in u have to get a present just b.c it's my B day)Obviously I won't get anything this year also...
To be honest, I don't really care whether i get one or not because Its just been so long I actually received something on this day.
(Although I have to admit that today is one of my laziest day of the year...sweet)
So is it okay not to celebrate your birthday?

I honestly don't care. It's just another day, plus I always feel kinda depressed cause I'm another year older and another year of my life has gone by.

I know some people (and also myself) who dont celebrate bdays at all. It's ok )
There are many ways to look at it.
A birthday signals that you have one less year to live. But instead of plunging into depression, you try to be with friends to make yourself feel better (and not kill yourself)
A birthday party celebrates your achievement (of leaving your mother's uterus for the first time in your life).
A birthday party is an excuse to get lots of presents.
I normally don't care about my birthday. I even find it awkward to receive presents. But for tomorrow I've invited some friends, and to my great surprise, not a single one has declined. I'm still puzzled how I'm supposed to fit 16 people in this place.
I have had years where I celebrate it and years I dont. Honestly I lost the whole magical day kind of thing. Its mainly an excuse not to go to class, get drunk, or be lazy.
I didn't celebrate my birthday when i was 22, i got married, and now we celebrated both of my birthdays since. Birthdays are fun if you have a fun group of people to celebrate with.
This was probably the first birthday I didn't really celebrate. Ironically it was the 25th. I mean we got invited for lunch by my godmother and I invited people who texted me (not too many, thanks to fb) for a glass of wine in the evening, but that was about it. Felt kinda weird but I just don't feel like partying a lot anymore.
Might be the age
EDIT: Oh, happy birthday btw.^^

My birthdays generally include me not caring as much as my mom, who loves taking pictures of everything. But usually it just includes a cake, a couple presents, opening cards from relatives, and that's about it. Also I don't like cake so I usually don't have much.
Even when I was younger, I didn't really like birthdays much (19 now).
Eat cake, nothing else, really. A few happy birthdays here or there but I generally don't care.
I haven't had a birthday party since grade 3? It's not a really big deal to me. My family and I go out for dinner and I usually get a present from them. I haven't been getting presents lately because my dad hasn't had a job for the last 2 years. Not really a big deal though. Like people posted, it's just another day. Sometimes I feel kind of sad that I don't get to share it with some people but again I rationalize it as another day.

My immediate family usually gets together and goes out for a dinner for our birthdays. No presents, parties, or anything like that. Extended family wise, there is still usually family birthday parties for my younger cousins and such. I don't think it is unusual as all as you start to get a little older. I don't think I've personally had a birthday party (family or friends) since I was 12 or 13. I didn't even really celebrate my 21st (mostly because it was in the middle of the work week lol).

I hate birthdays... I want to be seventeen again, seventeen foreverrrr....
same here, i havent had "normal" :D birthday since i was 11 years old, and its np for me, i dont realy like birthdays anyway.
I have never celebrated my birthday to my memory. I consider myself particularly well-adjusted and socially competent.
The voices tell me I am pretty.

Hmm birthdays, when i was a teenager (and now) my relationship with my parents was tenuous at best, what i mainly remember is that when i was 16 after a custody battle i was sent to my dads, turned 16 up there a month or two after and you know what they did? After fighting so long to get me, they left for San Diego the weekend my birthday happened, that was my bday present to be left alone at home and it was great cause i hate those fuckers. So no, some people don't celebrate birthdays, but I do. I get wasted with friends.
I normally get a shitload of presents, but I don't rly care too much. It actually sucks, because when it's your birthday, people feel forced to get something for me; but therefore, when it's not your birthday and they see something that I might like, they refrain from doing so, because "birthday is the time for presents". Which sucks.
And yea... I never liked celebrating that much. To get me partying on my birthday, it always took some hardcore friends who just wouldn't let go :/

I don't get why we celebrate birthdays, but I don't mind. I think it's nice to have another excuse to celebrate.
I love my birthdays, I take off work but tell friends/family I have to work and am going to the bar after with a few coworkers; I work 40 miles away from home so it's not like they will want to join. I turn my phone off, lock the door, and do nothing the rest of the day. Last year I watched the entire Death Note series.
It's gonna be a pain come this July as SC2 doesn't have ghosting. QQ

thats so sad.... b.day should be celebrated. its day of your birth ! thats great you made it to 22 and you are awesome why you dont want to celebrate awesomeness ?! Well i dont celebrate it hard core but i want to have at least a drink with my friends and have fun.
btw happy b.day man hope you have a great cake
I don't really celebrate them in a big way anymore. It's usually just me and some close friends going out to get some drinks, and shooting the shit. I like it that way, I don't need a big celebratory ordeal or anything like that.
When I turned 15 on the 22nd of December last year, it was my first birthday without presents and honestly I could care less about it. I just am happy with people wishing me happy birthday. I am pretty neutral about this issue. My friends don't know this otherwise I would be made fun of and shunned and yada yada lol But yea, I do have chocolate cake and hang out with friends.

bdays certainly aren't big anymore, but I still like to buy some high end beer and eat something nicer than usual and spend the evening doing something I enjoy rather than something I don't enjoy. don't care about presents at all though, nor about "partying".
Personally I don't care too much about my Birthday, but for everyone's birthday, my family goes out to eat at a restaurant, and then we have cake after. It's not too extravagant, but I think it's a very nice excuse to just have a nice dinner with your loved ones. I haven't had a birthday party since I hit double digits though.
Oh and Happy Birthday!
My GF gives me a gift, and that's it. Only very few of my friends know/knew my bday, I don't like to make a big scene.
(I had bday parties until... 19 probably)
Damn this is a sad blog.
Ever since I was born I've had birthdays / parties / presents.
Last couple of years (I'm 20) it's wound down quite a bit (couple presents from parents, no presents from friends [although some people ask if they should] then dinner with the family and or going out drinking with my friends [birthday hat at the bars = people buying you drinks all night lol])
When I was a kid though birthdays were always massive, lots of presents from friends and parents + parties like laser tag, mini putt, waterslides, etc.
I like my birthday....I get stuff and I get to eat cake ... :3
At least you don't live in Korea with "friends" who make you do stuff like 생일주(big bowl of alcohol mixing in all sorts of nasty stuff) or 십배주(ten shots of soju)..

I Concur! You guys actually have cake, I opt not to celebrate or receive gifts... Nothing special. Of course that doesnt stop others from listening but whatever.

Same here. (except the last part, i stopped around 16) If someone knows it's my birthday than its fine, but i'm not going out of my way to celebrate. I would much rather celebrate actual accomplishments of real life goals/challenges. Being born is nothing special...
I used to have huge birthday parties when I was younger. My parents would invite my extended family (my mom has 6 siblings, my dad has 8, and EVERYONE has kids), family friends, some distant family as well, etc.
Honestly, putting at least 60 Vietnamese people in one small bungalow is just a terrible, terrible idea.
Due to the craziness of my earlier birthdays, I prefer to either not celebrate them or just have a nice quiet dinner with a few loved ones. I know a lot of people who are similar as well so it's definitely not weird!
My family don't celebrate birthdays. We give out hand-written cards.
Well, most of my buddies and I all turned 19 last year, drinking age, so we celebrated heavily. My family always buys a cake for everyone's bday and we go out for dinner usually on the closest available day. There is certainly less emphasis than the birthday parties that I had as a little kid, but that is to be expected.
We don't do anything special for birthdays in my family, I get my mother flowers for hers and we go out for dinner at a restaurant (not fancy, just one that we all like) and that's it so you're not alone.
You can't say that you don't celebrate birthdays and then eat cake/go out to eat and stuff
On my birthdays I'm usually just slightly more introspective than usual. I don't like telling people because I feel like asking someone to wish you a happy birthday is kind of pathetic and sad, but at the same time I still spend the whole day wondering if anyone will remember. Usually someone ends up remembering a month later, but by that time it's just funny.
My family never celebrated bdays beyond a nice home cooked dinner (never going out or take-out). No presents are usually given.
I never really celebrated my birthdays, I usually get money from my parents though. Except last year they didn't give me anything- might be a sign saying 'get your own monies'.
Oh and none of my friends said happy birthday cause I hid my birthday on Facebook. -.- Some friends.
It's just you. Everyone I know celebrates their B-day. Except perhaps grandpa.
Throughout my childhood, my parents held celebrations for me, but These days the celebrations are not what they used to be, I'm not interested in the concept of a birthday anymore.
i just play games / do homework, and act surprised when i see my mom bring down a cake and the rest of the family following, singing happy birthday, eat cake/ice cream and its done. i also get cards with money cause they dont know what i want.
parties seem lame anyways <3
I absolutely celebrate birthdays; birthdays are amazing. If I'm not spending time with my family, I'm out partying and having a blast. Who doesn't want an excuse to have a great time?
Happy birthday man! I just turned 22 as well actually on Jan 20 which is still happening atm in NA... lol.
i eat cake every birthday, but i don't get present from anyone except from my sister, which is usually something cute like a handmade gift card so it's kinda worth it
There's also an entire sect of people that you can join. You know, those Jenova Witnesses. Yup, they joined Sephiroth in watching the birth of a new race.
(I know it's Jehova)
I don't really celebrate my birthday anymore. I spent my last birthday here on TL, watching Oz lose.
When we were growing up, we were too poor to celebrate birthdays.
Now that we're older, we can but all we usually do is go out to some restaurant. Now and then, we pick a really fancy one.
Dont really care or celebrate it anymore. Only big ones, 30, 40, 50 etc.
Just another day, if it happens on a friday/saturday i might go out with some friends and grab some beers but nothing fancy.
