Basically, if you've read my last blog, you'll know I've been struggling with anxiety and hypochondria to the point that it was severely impairing my ability to do anything at all. I had yet another procedure performed on me yesterday to check for the cancer which I was positive was in my esophagus. This makes a total of six doctors, including two throat specialists, I've seen in the past two months. Yesterday after my procedure, I heard what I've been hearing all along: there is no cancer, it's just bad inflammation from acid reflux.
Except after this doctor visit, my mom told me that she's terrified I'm going to lose my mind if I stay here any longer and she had a long talk with me and said that she's sending me to live with my father's relatives who live in a city close to Linz in Austria.
My mind shut down. This was the absolute last thing I was expecting. My dad was born in Austria in the late 1930s, he was one of thirteen kids, and his parents were dairy farmers or something. He left after the war and settled in Suriname which is where I was born and raised. I've only ever seen his family a few times in my life, mostly as a young kid when we'd make trips to Germany to visit his closest brother.
But she said that after my dad died, she's been keeping in constant contact with everyone. They're all spread out now. Some in Austria, some in Germany, and some of their kids and their kid's kids are all spread over Europe now for studying or working or god knows what. Two of his sisters and their kids (who are in their forties now) and their young kids (around ten years old or so) are all living close to each other in Austria and they, apparently, are very eager to look after me and spend time with me and made a very generous offer which my mom didn't want to refuse.
So I agreed and I'll be leaving sometime in September. I asked my sister if she wanted to go with me, but she said it would probably be better if I went on my own without her around to bother me. And I agreed with her because she is a cunt.
What exactly can Austrians on TL tell me about this area?

Sounds awesome. You, my friend, have taken the fake sick to skip school gag to a whole new level.
On a serious note though, would it help you out at all to tell yourself, "Hey, even if I have cancer, I don't care, I'm going to make the best of my time?" Seems pointless to agonize over it. Your body's gonna do what it wants to do. Eat right, sleep right, exercise right. Beyond that, it's up to fate.

Ya. And what would you do if you did have cancer? Live the best life while your time remains yes? So you dont have cancer, you should be doing that anyways.
|
I absolutely cannot fathom how you have convinced yourself of this. XDDDDD
I think you need to tell yourself you don't have cancer every morning, and stop worrying about it... cause even if you do, nothing you can do about it except hope you come out in the ___% that survives... and even if you survived YOU WOULD STILL EVENTUALLY DIE.
So... gl hf in Austria? :D Away from your cunt sister? lol
Sadly I have no experience there, but I suggest you try to see as many historical and cultural sites as possible while you are traipsing around Europe.

Austria has mountains.
Mountains, fyi, ARE FRICKING AWESOME.
Also I go hiking there every year and go snowboarding there, not every year.
TLDR: MOUNTAINS.
|
I bet my ass you gonna enjoy yourself a lot more in Austria than in USA. Much more peaceful and not to mention the gorgeous sights at the Alps. If you enjoy hiking than you gonna love Austria.
|
Well I'm living not far away from Linz (about an hour with car) so maybe i can tell you something about the area, depending on what do you want to know. All i can say right know is that upper austrians (cause Linz is located in upper austria) are the most nicest guys amongst all other austrians, at least in my mind, although i'm from styria ^^

rofl.
Get better man and have fun in Austria.
|
I went to Vienna when I was in high school, and got to see the Vienna Philharmonic - it was awesome! Maybe it's just Vienna, but I have this impression that Austrian people love classical music. Lots of historic (arts / music related) places to visit.
|
Go Skiing/snowboarding. That's all I know abuot Austria.
Either way, getting yourself into a new world should do wonders for helping your mind.

I've never been to austria but I know its really beautiful. I am sure no matter where you end up you will be living somewhere great.

I hope you use this time to reflect and really try to focus on your anxiety and fear. Try checking out a few books on cognitive behavioral therapy to help with the hypochondria.

Perhaps you were thinking of hypotension (low blood pressure)? And the other condition you might be thinking of is Münchausen syndrome, which is like hypochondria with a twist, the twist being that they do it for attention.

She is. The year before she left for college, my mother was deathly ill with some awful stomach virus and she was stumbling to the bathroom (which is right beside my room) and I guess her bowels let loose and she defecated right outside of my door. And my cunt sister yelled my name and said "come here" knowing that I would come out of my room and step right in it.
And I did.

It does seem like I've found myself in an exciting position because I'm a hypochondriac psycho. As for your serious note, I don't view this from a perspective of life and death so much as from a perspective of time. I know I'm going to die, but I want to die when I'm old. Not now. Not in my twenties. I'm too scared right now to die right now.

I hate the United States. Actually, I just hate the people. And I've never been hiking because Americans are too overworked, underpaid, and too sick from lack of quality healthcare to have any time to do anything. You Europeans have a six week holiday, us Americans have an eight day vacation that we spend doing nothing expect drinking a beer while sitting in a chair. You're also from Slovenia, I've read all the works of your philosopher Slavoj Zizek. I love reading things he wrote and then memorizing them and saying them to people during conversations and feeling smart.

You may be right about that that. My dad was not a man of education or erudition, but he would always play classical music and yell at me to listen to it while he was drunk. And also another trait all the Germanic people seem to share is that they are fucking obsessed with the weather. My parents would blame every bad mood and Law and Order re-run on the weather.

I'm positive I have some sort of psychological condition. I've had some sort of anxiety ever since I was a kid. I was actually borderline bulimic during my mid-teens. I'd only eat one apple a day and run five miles and ride a stationary bike for an hour with a trash bag with a hole in it over my body and a sweatshirt over that during the summer. My mom got so scared and angry over that and she grabbed me by my neck while I was standing outside on the phone one day and pushed my head down to the ground and screamed "If you don't start eating, I'll make you eat this fucking grass."

Oh my god, yes, they are very pretty. When I was a kid and we would take our vacations to Germany, I was always blown away by how gorgeous everyone there looked. Even the guys selling apples on the corner looked like they were GQ models.
I remember during one visit to Germany, a family friend had a daughter who was visiting from some university in Italy or something and I was a very small kid and I would sit on the floor and pull her sock off a little bit and she'd giggle and bend down and pull it back up and I kept doing it because I could see down her shirt, sort of.

Yes it is, ypochondriasis or hypochondria (sometimes referred to as health phobia or health anxiety) refers to excessive preoccupation or worry about having a serious illness.

Man, go see a psychologist. They really can teach you how to relate, understand and act with your fears. You need to do this. I suffered from hypochondria for four years. Everyday I had anxiety that I was going to die. Then I finally saw a psychologist and was able to learn.

Well Austria itself can be considered as a quite nice country to live in. We have a very high standard of living, 5-6 weeks of vacation (as you already said), quite a good health care system and were are very religious (because of that we have quite a few "legal holidays") I know there's a lot of stereotypes about austrians, f.e. that we are laid back and only drinking beer and eating fucking wiener schnitzel all day long (there are a lot more i know) --> well i have to say some of them are kinda true, we are really drinking a lot of beer and eating schnitzel xD
Anyways, some said mountains (and all the stuff you can do on/in/in front of/on top of them) already, the area around linz and wels its rather flat, with only a few hills, but don't panic there are mountains of course not that far away
And the dialect: well i would say there are a lot of different dialects depending in which area of austria you are, and none of them can be considered as real german, as they speak it in germany (well in vienna maybe). But if you speak german we will of course understand you, but you will have some problems to understand us maybe if we don't speak "real" german.
hope that helped a bit

What i'm saying is that everybody in Austria is great at SC2. Including your old family. Take the oppertunity (^_^)=b

Well... like I said in one of your other posts, make sure you seek psychological help. Quitting smoking, if you can, will do wonders for your anxiety as well; 1. No more stimulant/depressant factor and nicotine to throw your chemicals off worse than they are 2. Your biggest problem revolves around throat cancer and the acid reflux that makes you more worried you have it... quitting smoking can alleviate both of those things.
Enjoy your trip, just make sure to be proactive about your health. You have had plenty of great advice given to you, but I usually just see that instead of getting help for your condition you just give into getting help for you imagined conditions instead.
Not trying to be an ass, just saying please try to deal with the problem so it doesn't keep ruining your quality of life. (And maybe the next post blog post you put up on TL will be more positive lol)
Again, Hope you enjoy your trip.

Depends on where you are and who your are talking too. If you are in some rural area talking to people over 30 then it might be hard, but everyone has to learn english at school and in the more touristic areas almost everyone involved with tourists has basic english knowledge. Without knowing where exactly you are going to live we can't tell you much.
As for the dialect: As already mentioned, austrian dialects are quite different from standard german (even most german dialects are), but in schools you have to speak "Hochdeutsch" (standard german) so everyone is able to speak and understand clean german (maybe with a slight accent) and it is still the official language of the country.
Basically find out where exactly you are gonna live and we'll tell you the details
|
when Austrians speak standard german it sounds pretty awesome. at least the ones I met in the area around Salzburg did. The people from Vienna who I met were mostly assholes though :o
But OP be happy that your mum send you to austria because they tend to be nicer. Germans would call you out on the bullshit you are pulling.
|
About the accent: Try not to get the one that is spoken there, speak clean Highgerman instead(not that having an accent is bad or anything:D), because if you ever meet a german girl the accent will probably fuck up dirty-talking badly for you, since about 90% of the accents spoken there are funny as hell for germans(just like a few of those, which you can find in germany^^). I got a buddy in teamspeak who always sounds funny to me, even if he's tottally angry and ranting about something, I sincerely hope that I never meet him in ts when his gf leaves him or something even more serious happens to him or a member of his family, because chuckling about the way he speaks would be really mean. Oh and there's a story about dirty talking and a girl who I met on a classtrip, but she just came from a region in south-east-bavaria, which is very close to austria, but not in austria itself. The story ended with the loss of my erection, when she said something, which would've been pretty hot if she wouldn't have spoken with that hilarious accent... I guess it was still kinda hot, but I just couldn't notice it, because I was lying naked on the floor and couldn't stop laughing and thought I would die from laughing when she asked me if I'm alright or if I need help.

I've never been to any mountains or been skiing or snowboarding in my life, I'm so excited. The only thing I know about montainclimbing is what I know from watching documentaries about Reinhold Messner. I saw the new movie about him called Nanga Parbat.
Those dialects, especially those Allemanic dialects in Switzerland, sound very, very funny to me. Almost like an Italian speaking German, the accent is so weird. Actually, I remember in high school there was a female exchange student from Asutria and I had an art class with her and I tried to impress her by naming old Austrian schlager singers that I knew and speaking to her in German. She giggled a lot so I guess she understood me just fine.
If you live around Linz, you should come to the mountains with me. Wir sollten Alkohol mitbringen.

It'll be more positive because I won't write another one until I have something nice to say.

But OP be happy that your mum send you to austria because they tend to be nicer. Germans would call you out on the bullshit you are pulling.
I am not "pulling" anything, sir. Okay, maybe I am but it's not on purpose. I'm gonna bite you if you say that again.
That's funny everyone keeps saying the conventional wisdom about Austrians is that they're nicer to Germans. That's great, of course, but a long time ago during my parent's time, I guess that stereotype didn't exist because my mom would always say that Austrians were too strict and they're either laughing or they're crying, like crazy people. Or maybe she was just talking about my dad and not Austrians in general.

Catholic Bavarian girls, delicious.
Wonderful story, my friend.

About the austrians are nicer than germans thing, you might wanna read this blog from zatic about the different stereotypes about germans from different regions from germany: http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?id=176649 Btw if you read all of his blog entries definitly read the comments, sometimes they're even funnier than the blog itself (the story in the comments, of the asian guy who was sent into a german sauna and didn't know that they're mixed here made me fall of my chair) Oh and easy women and dirty porn fuck yeah!

i don't give a fuck about mountains to be honest, cause i'm surrounded from them, there everywhere and i don't get it climbing on them just to climb down later on :D

Sorry to disappoint you, but directly around Linz there are no mountains. You'd have to travel an hour ot two to get to some decent ones.
|
Linz is, after Eisenstadt, probably the most ugly large city in Austria imho. Sry to say If you do trips, check out Salzburg. It is probably the most stereotypical Austrian city, but also expensive as hell.
Just learn to ski/snowboard well and don't wave your US flag too much then the locals will like/love you.
