So I've been on this website for a while now and have noticed a lot of things. A lot of things I really enjoy and a lot of things I don't, so this is just a rant blog on one particular thing.
A lot of people on this website seem to think that ESPORTS is StarCraft, and anything other than the almighty glorious StarCraft is not considered ESPORTS. If a game reaches or reaching a high level of popularity, let the butthurt nerds rolling in calling blasphemy that anything other than StarCraft should like just die because it's not esports.
There were a lot of games that are still very popular today and has contributed a lot to the competitive gaming scene. There's CS, AoE, DotA, Warcraft III and many many many many more. Hell Age of Empires is a way harder game than StarCraft can ever be, and the skill ceiling of AoE is way higher than StarCraft (It's the truth, no troll)
I don't give a shit about esports personally, because I just want to have fun and do whatever the hell I want in a game and to be honest I find the entire esports thing is kind of lame. But this StarCraft = esports thing is just dumb...
It's hardly unique to starcraft. Some SCBW people say the same about SC2, etc.
It's pretty much the whole "hardcore vs casual" mentality that for whatever reason pervades gaming (on the internet). People pretty much either don't understand themselves why they play games or refuse to understand others.

Don't really know what to say. You have seen people play starcraft haven't you?

You haven't seen high level AoE II haven't you... Try planning out a 1 hour game with a 4 resource economy. AOE2 requires so much speed/skill nowdays to compete its insane. It's not about outguessing your oppenents build orders, and playing mind games, and hiding buildings/expansions/etc. its about OUTPLAYING him.

They're both RTS.
AoE2's UI is much worse than broodwar's, and the harvester mechanics are significantly more difficult. Have you seen people play AoE2?

What? They are basically the same....
The UI covers about 1/3 of the screen that BW does, and most people will have a hell of a time trying to hunt boar and manage their gold/lumber ratios on villagers. I don't even want to try explaining how hectic it is practicing the AoC mining mechanics.

I somewhat disagree with this opinion.
On one hand, you can select more units in AoE2. On the other hand, there is no attack move, which IMO is quite a huge difference.
Also, it's annoying having to deal with large swaths of forest being cut down, which tends to gradually increase worker inefficiency until you rebuild the resource drop-off sites.
"ESPORTS is StarCraft 2, you can't take the RTS out of ESPORTS, then it'd be ESPO and that doesn't make sense" --Hot_Bid
There was a featured thread that, basically, stated what you have stated, but in a more factual way. Well minus the rant, but the "ESPORTS = lots of games" part is still in tact.
So you don't give a shit about ESPORTS but you feel the need to rant about it? In my opinion you look pissed because Brood war and to a lesser extent, Sc2 are the most competitive games. They are the pinnacle of electronic sports competition, especially BW. I feel a bit of insecurity in your post, are you afraid that the other games do not get the recognition they deserve? Don't worry, most of us enjoy and respect the other scenes. Personally I like the Fighting games competition but I believe that Starcraft really embodies the spirit of ESPORTS.
Also Age of Empires? Really? It's all about WARCRAFT 2 BITCHES !

Yeah, but DotA and LoL also have their merits. That game is primarily a teamsport, with a clearly defined pitch and goal. SC is an ever-changing game of incredible individual skill, MOBAs are team games, games look similar at first glance (comparable to football/soccer) and the super-high skill is primarily centered around awesome teamwork.
Recognise the differences, and grow off the success of the MOBAs.
Get yourself a copy of the game. Play an easy game against the AI, try to juggle between harvester maintaining a steady ratio of the resources you need. That by itself is already hard to do.
I can't see anything being harder than BW. There must be some videos you can point us to? You must have seen them to be able to say that it has a higher skill ceiling than BW.
i don't think people on this website think esports only means starcraft. its a starcraft website and people come on it to discuss starcraft mainly. there are some smaller threads on other games but they are only minority interests, compared to the 100% of the people of the site who registered being starcraft fans.
if you mean people being rude about other games in live report threads when on streams like wow on blizz invitational or other MLG streams its just some people are rude about anything in live report threads.
i can't remember anyone saying that ESPORTS is exclusive to starcraft. i think most people here embrace the fighting game and shooter game communitys, at least to the extent where said "other" communities matter to these people personally.
with that said, i find the OP very dumb and uncalled for.

There can obviously be, a game where every second you have to have a thousand apm and manage a hundred control groups or something along those lines. With most competitive games the skill ceiling is effectively infinite, and other factors than sheer difficulty come into play (namely, which skills do you actually care about seeing?).

You are right, MOBA games definitely have a big place in esports and I should have mentionned them. To be honest I don't really watch them because I prioritize sc content but I definitely look forward to Dota 2 so I can really get into this genre.

I don't know whether you've heard of this, but an interesting thing to note: if you thought BM in SC2 was bad, get ready for MOBA BM lol. It's a jungle out there in terms of manners Just randomly putting that out there.

In a realistic human sense, no RTS is going to be harder than Broodwar.
AoE2 harder and more difficult than Starcraft, what a joke.

Yeah that's what I meant. No possible and real game is harder than BW.
Although I agree that BW is an overall harder game, I think there are certain aspects of AoE2 that tend to be harder than the equivalent aspects found in BW.
Balancing 4 resources seems to be much harder than managing minerals+vespene. The lack of attack-move tends to make army control more cumbersome. The tendency for AoE2 games to be much longer than BW games does strain the patience and stamina of the average player.
Then again, both are different games and are judged based on different merits and flaws.

These are a big chunk of what makes Starcraft more entertaining as an ESPORT compared to AoE.
I could believe either way about which one has a higher skill ceiling, but Starcraft has a faster pace and I would say is more punishing, which pushes entertainment value.
saying AoE is a harder game than starcraft on teamliquid is such hard flamebait lol. I'll agree that it's infinitely harder to beat 3 computers on hardest mode than it is to beat 3 computers on SC though.
I don't understand why everyone cares about thist. The game designers for games didn't design for games to be hard, but as long as a game is multiplayer with multiple aspects involved (ie not rock paper scissors) the skill cap is likely "unreachable".
Just take a look at Go and Chess, theoretically Go is harder but it's not like anyone can reach perfection in either so the room to debate which one takes more skill isn't very big.
Broodwar at an AI level is easy. By the looks of it OP thats all you really played it at. If you played BW at a level higher than AI then you might be saying something different. Although I will admit, I have never played Age of Empires. I never liked it. Too slow for my liking. So in saying that, I really cannot justify that Brood War is any harder or easier than Age of Empires. But there is a reason why Age of Empires online has really plummeted, and why it's hardly played at a top level, or at least at a top level where you hear about it. Maybe I am just not looking out for it? Anyway, from my own personal experience of StarCraft and Age of Empires (What little amount of it I have) StarCraft is a harder game, and far superior to Age of Empires in every way (In terms of gameplay, I am not discussing graphics)
You come onto a StarCraft website and rant and say that eSports is not equaled to StarCraft? That may in fact be true, but I can tell ya, a lot more money has come from StarCraft that has really defined "eSports". Most of which can be attributed to Kespa.
In addition, we do recognise other games out there that have added to what we now define as eSports. What I am about to say is totally opinionated and I don't have any actual evidence to back it up, but it seems to me, that other games have really piggy backed upon StarCraft's success, they saw the success that StarCraft has brought to eSports, hence why more and more companies are sponsoring these tournaments, why big companies are even hosting their own tournaments now, recently by Valve with their One million dollar DotA 2 tournament. Kespa has seemingly took a huge gamble with StarCraft and they really made eSports big. I am not saying that other games haven't attributed to eSports, especially games out there like Counter Strike 1.6, all I am saying is, StarCraft was the stepping stone to the acceptance of eSports.
I want to second the earlier request for vods of competitive AOE.I loved the game as a kid, but have never seen any true high level play. It would be interesting to experience again and compare it to Starcraft.

QFT, I've pretty much played all of those and the difference in skill between BW and pretty much every other game is miles long.
I've seen some of the AoE2 tournies a while ago when there was a post.. a while ago. Most of the games were just slowpushing with barracks and just producing as close to the line of skirmish as possible while sending villagers around looking for the randomspawn animals.
There were a few games that weren't like that though, it looked pretty sweet. Harder than starcraft, I'm not convinced.
That being said, i could completely accept a game like AoE2 into the ESPORTS spectrum, the same way i see CS, Quake, Dawn of War etc. It's some of the supercasual games that have been hitting the scene that have a 'quick to learn, quick to master' learning curve like WoW arena being a pretty big example.
So.. let me get this straight. The harder the resource/economy management is.. the better a game is competitively. ...
Fucking seriously? I used to be inseparable from Rise of Rome. I remember playing AoE2 in those terribad .. god it's been so long I can't even remember what the pre MSN kinda thing was called for Microsoft multiplayer games.
Even if you were making a legitimate comparison I have one thing to say: Apples and fucking Oranges.

care to clarify on how AoE is harder than SC? somehow i just don't buy it, the game pace is much slower, sure you gotta manage more resources but at such slow pace i don't see it to be such an issue (i mean not for me, but for progamers) ...
I thought this post was completely reasonable and I agreed until the AOE stuff. That's hilarious.
I actually don't even like arguing about what game takes "more skill" because in competitive gaming, how much skill it takes to win is based mostly on how tough the competition is.
Here is some knowledge for ya: the competition in broodwar is some of the stiffest in competitive gaming, if not THE stiffest. AOE definitely isn't in the same league as it, I don't really think any game is.... but if there is one it isn't AOE.
I agree that many usages of the term ESPORTS are stupid and undermine the legitimacy of Starcraft as a self-sustainable institution (and may be HURTING STARCRAFT).
To me, when I think of esports, i think of WCG and other organizations that sought to promote all computer games. But for the most part, most professional gamers exist within their own realms. Not often, do you see a pro smash bros player switch to SC.
Confounding Esports with starcraft puts it on a shared level with other inferior games and assumes a greater interdependence between different competitive gaming communities.
The history and legacy behind Starcraft is a beauty in its own right.
"I hate that you shit on something because you don't like it so I shit on your opinion because I don't like it." At least you're not any different from us. You're welcome!
It's quite simple: Every game where you can play against an opponent can be e-sports. Not the skill level decides what ends up being one, but the fanbase.
If there are fans that would pay to watch players play as well as players ready to dedicate their life to mastering the game, it's E-Sports. The skill level of the game doesn't even matter at all, it's the community around it that matters.
We might not like some of the games or platforms (Seriously... console games as E-Sports... i will never understand this world) but since they have a community around it that wants to watch players play and they are ready to pay for it, they are legitimate E-Sports. Yeah, some are harder, some are easier, but in the end it doesn't matter at all.
Totally agree on "not only starcraft is esports", been playing cs for years myself. But... alot of people have been showing some love towards EVO for example as well I've seen links to the evo stream or something during the Anaheim weekend all the time from starcraft people. And LoL has been getting a fair share of attention as well, it's even implemented in the stream thingy. (the [BW][SC2][Misc][LoL] part)
So even on TL (a Starcraft site ... !!!! Oo) we appreciate these competetive games and basically support them/their communities to some extent. Not everyone no, but after all this is a site for sc first so you can't complain about people talking about sc most of the time.
edit: just remembered the jason lake interview, I do have to say that there seem to be alot of people who forget where ESPORTS started I guess. But I'm not in a position to really talk about that too much.

Its not bashing. Its the reality.
-.- It is most definitely a biased statement. I'm a BW guy too but that original statement is ridiculous. Right now SC2 is the head of esports in the competitive, global sense, so they've sort of become synonymous for the time being.

This for fucking days. Football requires very little skill to play, but it is the hardest sport on the planet to become the best at, purely because the competition is insanely high. Anyway, I wanna see FPVODs of AoE or AoM (I love me some mythology!).

Well, it depends on the viewpoint. SC2 was claimed to be an ESPORT long before it was released. I dont buy that.I think that in order for game to be ESPORT at least the game has to be balanced. The talk about imbalance is forbiden on this site, but for me this is very objective criteria of a game is good for ESPORT or not. SC2 is highly unbalanced game ( http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=252870 ) although its more than a year old, bunch of patches and bazzilion tournaments later.

The only requirement for an esport is for there to be people who watch the game...nothing in the actual content of the game is absolute direct criterion for whether or not it is an esport. If the game is fun to watch (i.e. balanced, high skill ceiling), then those things will show up naturally through viewership. If it isn't then no one will watch or play it.
So regardless of what you think about the game, it doesn't matter.

They did design the game to be competetive enough for solid eSports. "The game" wasn't claim anything.
Also, we should stop discussing "BW = awesome, SC2 = shit" and vice versa. It makes no sense. NO.SENSE.
QuakeWorld is the hardest game to get good at. Nothing comes close in terms of speed, acrobatic control, aiming speed.
But really, game being hard doesnt matter. The point is to have the popularity, that is what esports is about, and so far BW has been the only game on the planet to achieve a real life popularity - that is having an industry in real life, not just e-transactions and virtual goods.

Fair enough. In terms of viewership, revenue, and popularity, sc2 is probably more of an esport than BW is. It's just ridiculous that sc2 players seem to have the gall to bash other games (AoE, LoL, WC, CnC, etc) when the reality is, if their game didn't have the word "starcraft" in the title, it would literally just be another thread in the sports and games section. Maybe a subforum if it got really popular.

Uhh, not really. There is the elephant in the room. SC2 is a success of a solid scale, but there exists the mammoth whose results have dwarfed all other candidates for esports popularity. Lol.
