I'm like you, so PLEASE discuss/debate/argue things with me like I'm like you. (note: I'm not the first person to ask this)
I became a staff member (banling) several months ago. There is a few things I did not fully comprehend before getting this red hammer though (they're kinda the same thing).
I feel like I'm looked at differently.. obviously not in a wholly negative way - quite the opposite; which is exactly why it can be negative. I feel like I have a lot to live up to when I make posts, like I have more to lose if I'm wrong. Of course, I'm never actually wrong (hehe), but I'd still rather not feel like this. Which is why I am formally tendering my resignation (lol jk).
Consider how you see the following line at the bottom of every page on this forum (note: I am staff AND a user).
The opinions expressed by our users do not reflect the official position of TeamLiquid.net or its staff. + Show Spoiler +But it's more to it than that... I feel like there are things about me that aren't necessarily "becoming" of a Banling / TL Staff member. For example, I've been smoking the greeny greens for over 10 years (I'm 23 now - started perhaps once a month but up to ~ once a day). I am a huge advocate of legalizing it for pretty much all the reasons you hear people saying (but particularly the part about hemp being a fucking amazing material and cash crop). Also, I'm just a poor college student (living a few hours from Orlando), I've never really been able to afford to go to any major event; hell, I've never even been to a LAN. I suspect I have never actually met another TL member irl (*braces for thrown food products*). I also love to participate in *controversial* discussions about things I'm familiar with in the General forum, often blatantly taking my own side of the controversial issue. I'm also very confident in my abilities as a mapmaker & theorist and have a history of not being afraid to say so often in the form of "epeen" remarks (though this I have basically cut back on entirely minus my self-marketing mapmaking portfolio... my posting history is still there). Okay I'll stop here before this becomes some sort of confession; not the point of this post.
More importantly: I feel like people are less likely to debate or argue things with me simply because I have the power to ban them (I only would if they get out of line of course) but not vice versa.
NO! Don't do this please. I love learning. I learn most when my mistakes are pointed out to me. So please point out any mistakes you see me make, both in my posting and mapmaking.
DO NOT WORRY ABOUT "GETTING ON MY BAD SIDE". I do not let this kind of thing affect what I do with banling powers.
I'm like you, so discuss things with me like I'm you. Ignore the red hammer when arguing with me, please. Shoutout @ two people who already do this: a176 and funcmode.
Thank you.

Maybe because it seems like you're taking yourself too seriously. This post, for example.

Can I call you "Young B" and you can call me "Big B" any time we refer to eachother in the forums? I think it would be funny. You can modify the nickname you use for me if you so deem it appropriate.

QFT, the only people I'd be careful about arguing with are IdrA and iNcoNtroL, because one could metaphorically tear my heart out through my eyes, and the other physically could.
This is a public Internet forum, true posters say whatever the fuck they want.

Don't be afraid of: Barrin Plexa
Be very afraid of: Mani Naz
Got it!
No seriously I've had similar thoughts as you after what if you were on staff? questions. I would have to curtail the blunt posts I make. Obviously not everyone takes that stance or at least has their own definition of toned down but it's something that's always nagged me. If I were you, could I post the same way I did before? The answer is probably not.
On the other side of the quote in your post there is the idea that people are less likely to argue with a hammer. Yes and no. I can't deny some people would meekly excuse themselves if they found themselves on the opposite side of your argument but for the most part I'd like to believe that the only measure of respect given is the quality in the argument. A person is a lot less likely to make a redundant, half assed and venomous post towards someone on staff than they are another user.
Or maybe I'm completely wrong on that one- I'm sure more than one banling would disagree but I still feel like it's easier in general to argue without grounds against a regular user over a banling.
Oh yeah this was my conclusion. Slipped my mind cos I'm staring at skyrim and the NASL timer.
TL Staff weren't drawn out of a hat. In a long discussion thread I'll skip over posts arguing with each other with some frequency because I naturally assume it's grounded closer to personal attacks than meritorious debate. That's my own bias. I read what staff right because they weren't accidentally selected as part of staff. If they were idiots I would know about it already or they wouldn't be on staff. So all and all, it's less based on fear for me and more based on an assumption that if you didn't know what the hell you were talking about then you probably wouldn't be adamant about your viewpoint.

So your hammer is not for novelty purposes?
|
I once was on a party and smoked some weed with some friends and some friendly strangers. During our conversation one of the guys i didnt know mentioned that he is working as a cop. Of course most of us felt a bit uncomfortable after that, even if he said to us that he doesnt mind us smoking weed and that he thinks its stupid that he has to deal with such banalities at work. Anyway after his "confession" people started to avoid him what made me feel a bit sorry for him since he seemed like a cool guy. In a certain way your story reminds me of his.

Trivia fact: When Barrin bans you he literally shows up at your house and hits you with a hammer. Things like this are why users like Ti-XX keep on trying to make accounts-- repetitive blows to the head.

So... the hammer's not purely for overcompensating?

Oh yeah Florida represent.

It was a joke (hence, no image).
This is like many things in life, such as promotions above your once peers as well. If you watch the new season of Dexter (I'll try not to spoil specifically) a character gets promoted to Lieutenant of the cops and finds out it is harder to have just everyday lunch break talks with those who were once of equal rank. Authority/power does that, I guess.

tldr
User was temp banned for this post.

I'm going to treat you like every other poster: 2/5 blog!!
O N E O F U S ! O N E O F U S ! O N E O F U S !

This reminds me of the bandwagon thread where everyone was rallying behind Fakesteve(?) and ragging on Hazel(?). Afterwards this discussion broke out in the community about moderators/banlings and the respect people on an internet forum get just by virtue of their status.

None of us should wander alone, you least of all. Barrin? I know you suffer, I see it day by day. Are you sure you do not suffer needlessly? There are other ways, Barrin, other paths we might take.
