GIVING OUT 17 BETA KEYS, I WILL UPDATE THIS WHEN IVE RUN OUT ):
edit: IM ALL OUT
I couldn't think of any way to really give these out. I could have just dumped on Reddit or begged everyone to follow me to give these out. But neither of those sound any fun
So let's do an AMA! I haven't really done much to warrant it and I doubt the opportunity will ever rise again where I can blatantly entice people to ask me something (through beta keys), so I figured why not. I'm not expecting much of a response, but I'm hoping at least nine people ask me anything (relative or not) so I can hand these out.
Please no Math questions, I am honestly horrid since the 10th grade.
I'll try and summarize myself in a few positive and negative ways to be fair. There isn't much about me that people would like to know more of (defeating the point of an AMA), but let's see what I can come up with:
*For all relative interest towards my experiences and work, you can check out my Linkedin Page (I could use feedback on it too please): Linkedin.com
- I enjoy meeting new and interesting people.
- I take things too personally, even teasing from acquaintances.
- I can write about almost anything for at least 350 words (creatively or informally).
- I still have the university mindset where I think I know more than I really do.
- I am a simple guy in that a great meal at a restaurant and good conversations could make me overwhelmed with cheer for weeks.
- I am consistent with my work ethics, just inconsistent with relationships
- I may be best known for my dedication, devotion and willingness to cooperate with others to achieve a common project.
- I am absolutely a terrible sore loser in many competitive games (WarCraft III, Dota 2 & StarCraft II)
- I have done a variety of work within E-Sports for the sake of the work (most of it was incredible and a huge learning experience)
- I have trouble asking for things from friends and people, instead I complain a lot.
- I always aim to help others.
- I have a horrible problem of constantly comparing others to myself - to which I become bitter/jealous of that person.
Surprisingly, I had an easier time finding my flaws than qualities. Welp, that's all I could think of! Let's talk about some stuff!
|
Actually i don't have any clever Question i'd throw out at you so i just take this chance to say thank you for everything you're doing - i appreciate your blogs and most of the things you're contributing here. Hats off to you and your dedication to the community.
|
Why did you first choose to get into esports? What made you think, 'instead of a traditional job, I want to work in this unstable industry and help it grow'? Also, as I already have a key, please don't send me one ^^

JUST ASK ME ABOUT SOMETHING SILLY LIKE THE COLORS OF RAINBOWS! Oh no problem! I do it because I like to do it, so the only dedication is of my obsession to do what I like doing :B
Let's talk some more!

Okay - If you could spend a day with one progamer of your choice at your hometown/place. Who would it be, what whould you show them for entertainment and why (nothing related to playing Starcraft).

I understand that you would not necessarily want to give out this sort of information, but I figured it's the only SC2-related question that I'd like to ask you. Given that you're an avid follower of the SC2 competitive scene, what ladder rank are you?

Well that blows ):
I got into E-Sports because of two reasons: 1. It is very convenient, most my writing for my classes is on the computer, so I could thankfully multitask.
2. The second reason is because I need to remain in school in order to fulfill the requirements of my tuition agreement set by my family (as per the child support contract set forth when my parents first got divorced in New Jersey 12 years ago). This meant I also had to finish school by the age of 24 (which I am turning this summer), so I haven't had a summer vacation since like 2002 or so (been going to school, 2-3 classes in the summer, 4 in university, 7 to 9 in CEGEP [junior college in Quebec - more or less]). This meant I couldn't necessarily hold on a full-time job, keep my full-time status of university. If I decided to quit school, the child support funds would be cut severely and my brother would not have the necessary family savings to attend CEGEP/Junior College (we have both did certain years twice due to learning difficulties and language problems [by law, I had to attend a French high-school despite coming from an entirely English language background]).
I bet that really makes your question even less answered, huh? Doing this helped show I could do something if I put my mind to it [which is something I needed to answer personally] and also create a reputable CV (somewhat). It's a big leap from saying you can do things to actually doing those things, no matter how big or small it is!
Fuck, page two already T_T

From 2012, who do you think was thé most outstanding SC2 player. (What I mean is, who rose to the top of the SC2 scene in 2012 according to your opinion).

Boom, easy. Liquid Sheth. He's been the closest progamer friend I've had and he is been nothing but supportive, sweet and generous. More than the public will ever know.
I have two hometowns and although I loved my life in Millstone, New Jersey. I loved the area of this small town in Quebec I lived in.
But honestly, Montreal is the best and I would take him to a restaurant because he's focused on eating well and I love eating good food, always find to get a good mix of both at a perfect restaurant.
If it had to be entertainment, probably to the St. Joseph's Oratory. Fantastic view in Autumn and Summer and it really let me reflect on things. I hope it would help him too!

How would you describe the past 5 years of your life? 1 sentence per year max.

On February 08 2013 06:30 d4d wrote: What is it people have against bugs?
I think it's due to how they perceive bugs from media and also because of their own personal experience. Bugs look nothing as we've come to understand about animals ranging from their size to number of ligaments, feeling of their skin (not fur or feathers) and their organs/blood/insides.
It's all very weird nad some people can't accept that and it freaks them out.

what do you think you would have done if you didn't have any interest in gaming?

It was memorable because any views or ideas I had of them dissolved when I met them all in-person, even if I didn't say much. I also got to meet Conrad from EG (QuantumPope) who is an amazing guy and later at the small get-together at the hotel room, I got to meet Gunrun, Shindigs and Mona (hayzelynut, I hope I spelled that right) who are also all so down-to-earth. Short replies, fast reading, assumption of the topic. I don't do LR topics because watching all the games takes more bandwidth than I'd like. The reality is that I stick with safe topics that don't demand much conversation or opinion. I don't do General either. I post an opinion on sensitive subjects wait an hour then check for replies. If none, I move onto another topic. Blogs are also easy-reads, quick-reply places because I've read so many similar issues from so many similar people.
Manage your time wisely and you can post as much as you want. From 11PM to noon, I don't post much and the activity on the forum lessens as well. Just gotta work when it is busy and figure how to manage school work, E-Sports and chatter.

yes, it is evolving horizontally, I think the vertical growth of it is smaller than people are leading it on to believe (yes, I think E-Sports could be on television, but not within the next two-three years thus far, especially when WebTV is quickly out-pacing).
If I could change it, I'd boost up the amount of contributors that are volunteers into somewhat pseudo-part-time paid ones. It's unrealistic, but the amount of unpaid work that's sustaining a large part of the content everyone reads or watches on a daily basis is absolutely astounding @_@

Legitimacy and relationships. There is a difference but its because E-Sports has no prospered and thus the sustainable method for news sites to remain afloat is quite low.
This is my fast answer, but in my opinion, with time, E-Sports Journalism will definitely be able to say and do a lot more as the scene grows larger and people become less able to see and know everything that there is to know (among many, many other things that need to blossom).

In some parts, it has made me very bitter. Reddit as well makes me a bit bitter because its unfiltered bluntness. The community is great and it feels much smaller than it really is. It changed me in that it accepted most of the things I do and at how fast I do (or how much in terms of posting) whereas in the past; I would get a lot of problems with it. I've had to change a lot about myself and I've also learned to filter a lot of what I say rahter than being cynically blunt or heavily sarcastic. I think morality will always be set by the majority of the political figures presumably elected by a democratic form (that or some form of systematic democracy). I think we both know the issues with the voting systems especially in America (so much bias and strategy in the minimalist of things). However, I think individual set of rules is perhaps the better way in theory, but I am not too researched on any exemplary countries that function this way currently (please enlighten me!).
In essence, norms and values will always differ from people and interpreted differently as well, imposed morals is just the quickest way to find a common point in most values (unfortunately sometimes set by the religious past of the country).

You know when you're alone and you have time to think out everything you wanted to say, you can come off as pretty likeable. The reason I compare is a mix of where I am, where I want to be and the fear of not quite getting there while seeing those with opportunity, squander it (of course, I'm seeing it as them waste it; I'm sure they'll disagree).
Comparison is just a bad habit and a reminder that things are unfair. Y'know there's a Calvin & Hobbes comic where Calvin rants about how things are unfair and it's never in his favour. Very similar here in that I don't count my blessings and focus more on where I want to be instead of working with what I have.
It just comes with time where I'll eventually just accept where I am and what I have. Maybe when I have my own proper life.

All industries grow with scars and I doubt E-Sports is any different. People see these things such as OWN3D as a turn for the worse for E-Sports when, in reality, it is just natural. Remember WCG? That's gone to shit now but before it was a foundational block towards the growth of legitimate competition within gaming. As the scene grows, so will its people and so will organizations. WCG has gone to shit and maybe MLG or ESL will go to shit too. I don't know, but all I'm saying is that foundations through years will begin to diminish as new and stronger ones grow. It's just natural and I hope for the best that these evolutions help attract new interest.
In other ways, I don't like the large separation between community and notable personalities. In some areas, its needed, but in others, the distancing is definitely an annoyance.

I am so bad in Economics, but capitalism would be fine if it wasn't so damn robotic and cheapened. How everything is angled with marketable purposes to better persuade the human psyche. I definitely dislike how systems unrelated to economics in some regard are boiled down to Service A for Price B.

I'm hoping IPL6 will be the most fun! And poop! Let me see if I have any left D:

Yes of course. Observation just confirms what we imagine or hypothesize.

A nerd falling into the rabit hole was the first Torte blog I read... Have you had any crazy adventures since (maybe something I missed)?
Also, what motivates you to write AA and in what way do you want to "be relevant" or influence the scene? Further, do you see yourself keeping involved with SC2 or are you considering or already looking into some of the other games? (edit, I know you're out of keys, but I still want answers!)

Yeah, I'm pretty excited for IPL6. ^^ I'm not going, just watching online, but if it's anything like IPL5 was, it's going to kick ass. Alright. o.o

Whatever they see, they cannot identify it visually.

NASL S3! But honestly, that club night was pretty wild for me hahah
Good question! My bitterness was my original intention when writing that series as I was unhappy about how I came out of all that work with being by myself again. Friends constantly asked me to do my own content, so I really wanted to write about my opinions on things and then get the opinions of those I respect. Great learning experience and after 4-5 months, I'm pretty happy with the near-consistent results (not many comments, but a lot of smart and intelligent people talking!)
Like most people, I'd love it if my opinion was taken into account by thoise making the big moves, but I'm not really at that level of seniority or relevance (maybe ever). I'd love to player-manage or help manage a large team, but in terms of relevancy, I think that all depends on who wants to consider me relevant; I'm more interested in that.
I'm thinking with SC2 til the end of my school year (April-June). After that, I haven't decided what to do from there. I don't have as much time as I did then to get involved with another game beyond being a spectator, but who knows how it'll be after university. I might not have anymore time for Sc2 either.

Not if he embellishes the officials
hohohooh

yes, embellish is definitely an odd word to use
Oof, That was more fun than I thought! 8 pages of questions of all sorts of fun! I wish I got to answer all of them with succinct and conciseness that really said everything I wanted to say ):

Thanks a lot for asking so many fun questions!

Hi! Quick question:
Do you travel at all, to events or for other e-sports related business, and how do you feel your current location affects your career in esports?
Also are you going to Lan ETS? If yes I look forward to seeing you there!

I'm neither casting nor playing at LAN ETS, but I will stop by. Would be cool to chill with you guys again!
I wish I traveled, I'd say if I was sent or able to travel, I would feel so much more rewarded sentimentally and materialistically. If you've never been to a major event, it can be very rewarding and an addicting feeling of giddiness and excitement if you're involved enough beyond just spectating the matches!
Nearly all my work has been unpaid.

Annnnndddd Torte de Lini emerges from the fray alive and in one piece. Amazing.

You are the coach/manager or whatever in a foreign team and you can choose/buy 5 player. Which 5 player do you wish?
|
Did you know that your name, in addition to being a play on Tortelini, has a weird multi-lingual ring to it?
"Torte" is German for "cake",
"de" is French for "of",
"Lini" is Italian for "bed linen". [<-- according to google translate]

In your opinion, what are the qualities necessary for someone to be a good journalist (good in sense of quality, not most famous or yellow pages shit)? What pointers would you give to people who are new to journalism and what would you recommend to them?
Whoring for key obviously, but i'm really interested on your thoughts about the journalism (kinda aspiring to become one, but i want to be good, not just one more person who realised that he can type on keyboard and pronounces himself a journalist).
