holy shit I just finished reading the story, and it brought tears to my eyes and so much anger. Its about a girl in texas that her parents locked her in a closet for years, didn't feed her, and pimped her to pedo's she was 8 years old and weighted as much as a 2 year old. Im beyond shocked
very long read, but must read
+ Show Spoiler + In a photo of Lauren taken at Children’s Medical Center Dallas after her rescue on June 11, 2001, she had the skeletal look of a Holocaust survivor. She was no bigger than a 2-year-old, and hers was the worst case of child abuse in the hospital’s history. She also had teeth missing and genital abnormalities, and her body was trying to shut down. It's really disturbing that things like this happen in our world. Also fuck everyone involved with this, just sick.

Please spoiler picture, wasn't mentally prepared for this.

Can you spoiler the photo please?
I came here expecting something else, and I'm shocked...
|
why do I check TL blogs while breakfasting?
Now I feel terrible :X
Ty for the recommendation though .

So not going to read this. Why would I? There's 7 billion people on this planet, and we get news from all over the world nowadays. It's just a matter of probability that there's some twisted, sick fuck out there doing something like that. News like this are why my grandmother thinks that behind every bush there's a sex offender.

no read it
feel sad
knew the world is ugly already .. until someone does something to make it SEEM fun and joyful
humans are pets struggling to be more.. most of the time we fail
this just makes me want to save the world even more (if that was possible)

People that seek to read this kind of stuff then share it are slightly messed up themselves.

It was a good read. Her recovery was unexpected.

edited: spoiler the pic
and what the fuck no of course I didn't enjoy what happened to her or reading about it...sick
I found the article while browsing longreads.com and once I started reading it I had to finish it to see what was the outcome of all

i thought one of the most interesting and thought provoking parts of the article was the examination of the mother. the part where she's asking the other person to pray for her is a really powerful and confusing moment.
i dont think it's fair to think is just about something terrible that happened - i think they try to really look at a lot of different things and it challenged the way i initially thought about things.
i thought the article does a good job in trying to fairly portray everyone involved.

This article made me ill. Anyone who does something like this to a child deserves nothing less than the death penalty.

To be honest I read the article because I was fascinated about the psychological problems the girl must've gone through rather than to simply read about the parents etc.

the parents should be hanged. the pedo should be castrated.

U know I actually value curiosity and informing myself, yes this is a sad fucked up story, but why shouldn't I read it or share. Does it have to be all candy and roses my whole life, should I ignore all the suffering people in third world countries, stories of rape and abuses, wars, countries destroyed by politics and corruption and instead read the latest good american story

Valuing curiosity, in this instance, is just an excuse for wanting to peak over the fence at the fucked up neighbors.
I'm sorry you're blind to any ground between candy and roses and this sort of thing. Of course we should be informed on wars, corruption and mass suffering, as they affect a lot of people and may be prevented. Instead, these isolated sick crimes are reported more for hits from bored voyeurs/shock seekers than anyone else. Sick, unusual crimes get way more coverage than stories about the socially relevant issues you list. You claim you want to be 'informed' and yet fixate on the more shocking stuff that interests you. If only more mundane suffering had the same allure.

Please, please take all those involved in that story out back and shoot them, without any further questions asked.

It was a long read but couldn't stop reading as it was so interesting and heart wrenching. Glad to see she is doing well now and is surrounded by people who love her and care about her and want her to be a part of their lives. It's just a reminder that no one should ever give up on their dreams. When she first went to the hospital after being rescued, doctors expected her body to shut down but her heart kept beating...this girl had an undeniable will to survive despite her circumstances and nothing else in life can ever come close to the pain and suffering and fear she experienced as a child. Stories of heroes and people who have faced adversity frequently come up in the news, but rarely in life do you ever see such a strong person who makes other people's stories pale in comparison, and Lauren's story is exactly that.
