“Appear weak when you are Strong” – Sun Tzu
Words of a true Murloc! If Sun Tzu was a World of Warcraft character, he would be a Morgl the Oracle. Mgrlrlrlrlr! That quote from Sun Tzu embodies Murky. You take advantage of the players who underestimate you and think you’re weak, and you come back at them and give them the Octo-BOP.
One of the reasons why I love Murky is because I’m able to almost always be on the map putting in value without the fear of a long death timer. I can take on risks that I normally wouldn’t take on other heroes, such as, going on YOLO missions to steal their camps like MF’ing Rambo or catching their weak heroes on rotations as they take obvious rotations paths. And the most obvious reason to why I love this hero is because he’s small cute and green and does fart noises when you auto attack people with your little fish <3.
II. Draft On Any 3 Lane Map
The draft is one of the most important parts to pay attention to when picking murky. You really have to up your Billy Mays game to sell the idea that Murky is a viable pick for your team comp, perhaps some Dr. Phil action to get them to believe in the mgrl’er. If you’re playing HL, and you’re first pick, then you really want to influence your team, preferably the last slot player to pick a solo laner that would counter your counter in the solo. If your counter comes down to your lane, ask for an immediate lane swap, don’t waste time trying to duel someone who counters you hard. Now, if you’re mid or last pick, you can see if they pick their solo laner early on. What I hope to face against are popular picks like Dehaka, Yrel, Blaze, Malthael, or a Bruiser tank that isn’t Sonya or Artanis. I would try to influence my team into getting a Mage “Burst DPS”, support, tank “Main Tank”, “X hero who can solo and put out DPS”.
Also, try to be nice to your team, at first they might be against you picking murky; you must never feed the fire of negativity. If they do something good in a game, even if they flamed you during the draft, give them compliments. The last thing you want is for your team to go on a negativity, toxic airplane spiral effect to defeat. Being friendly and positive will make it harder for them to keep on hating someone who’s acting kindly to them.
Just be like, it’s ok guys! I just read Shenron’s guide! WE WILL WIN BABY e Z Mgrlrlrl! With little murloc emoji’s.
As you’re influencing the draft, make sure to go through the profile of your team mates and see who can play mages, who has a nice warrior pool, who can play supports, and you can start calling out heroes that these players will most probably relate to. It’s very important to make your influencing sound as you’re just suggesting what would be most likely to fit. You never ever want to sound like you’re being bossy, because the most common critique they will send back at you is, “Why are you playing Murky?”
III. Strategy On ANY 3 Lane Map
Three lane maps is one of Murky’s strongest ring, where he puts on the gloves and gives his opponents an angry Mike Tyson-like Mgrl as he slaps his opponents with his fish. The entire map is murky’s world, and ALL of the camps are his Oysters, AND NOBODY taking his pearls baby e Z. You got to go in with the confidence of Genghis Khan, and like the Great Khan and Daenerys Targaryen, YOU SHALL TAKE WHAT IS YOURS… WITH FISH SLAPS AND SLIME MGrlrlrlrlrl!
Your objective as Murky is to create as much mayhem as possible, making the enemy team chase you around or put more attention to you than they need to, while your team creates value elsewhere on the map. Early game before level 10, if all possible try to make their team fight 4v4 vs your team during objectives, and keep and delay their 5th player away from the point. You can do this by zoning them out of their rotation path, or create so much pressure that they are forced to stay to deal with you or at least get a kill off you before they rotate. If they just decide to leave anyway, then you have to gauge the situation at hand. If your team is mostly losing fights, then the correct decision is to tell your team mates to back off from objective while you push. If your team has lvl 7 before the enemy team, then rotate to help your team secure the objective, and along the way clear waves as you get to the objective site. If their team has a talent up and has a big xp leads, then before objective starts, tell them to give objective and take camps.
When your team gets to lvl 10, you always want to group with your team for objectives, except if they get a pick before objective starts, and the enemy team decides to give away the objective.
a. Map Ghosting / Confidence Building
What Map Ghosting is, is envisioning where and what the enemy team is doing when they aren’t showing on the map. I got this idea from Day on one of his StarCraft BroodWar podcasts and it really stuck to me. Day Is one of my gaming heroes, next to BoXeR, Jaedong and Flash, he’s WICKED smart, I strongly recommend you to check out his content. How I would use Map Ghosting in a game like Hots, is by almost always looking at the mini map and analyzing, who’s most likely to do their camps. I try to read their intentions by the way they rotate or appear on the map. For example, if their mage is middle with the healer, their tank went to cover for their “Sonya” player at bottom lane, then you can almost be 100% guaranteed that sonya is off doing camps and almost always it’s the siege first.
The way you build up confidence in your team is by calling these things out, right after you notice sonya is off doing a camp, you type or say in comms, “Sonya’s doing camp right now”, and right after you say that and she completes the camp, it plants the seed of trust onto your team mates. As you notice that sonya is off doing a camp, you tell your mid laner to cover for you while you take a camp, and you tell your team that I’m going to do this right now because sonya is doing bruiser and I’m going to do ours to counter it, and as you complete your bruiser and they complete theirs, your team learns to trust your calls more and more. Before any teamfight starts, you analyze and see that you need to kill a key hero in their team, if you’re on comms, you let your team know who you want, and while on the team fight, you guide your team to focus on the target that you Octograb, you say on the mic, “On X hero” and you repeat it 3-4 times so everyone knows the urgency of targeting that hero and get the pick. When the enemy team doesn’t show on the map, try to put yourself in their shoes, what would I do to try to climb back in this game? Could be that they’re doing boss, or setting up for an ambush on boss, and you can predict which one it’s going to be by the way they’ve played the entire game. The more you organize your team to work with you, the more trust they will have in you. Always compliment your team for doing a great job, what you’re trying to do is erase any negative thoughts that they might have for you picking murky, and replace it with a plan, and positivity.
The more consecutive games you play, people start to recognize you and saw how well you did the previous game and become more likely to work with you again on the next game, or even the enemy team who got bopped, if they queue into your team, they’ll most likely be okay with working around a murky pick.
b. Map Control / How To Steal Camps
Here’s a short video I made about how to steal camps as Murky and map control in general. One thing I would like to add is that I keep a mental check on all the camps that are yet to take and I prioritize on using my bribe stacks on the enemy team, and if the enemy team is on point in doing their camps, I bribe my own camps right before objectives.
IV. Draft On ANY 2 Lane Map / Strategy
YEP! You heard me correctly, “2 LANE MAPS!” What I said before about upping your Billy Mays selling game, it goes 10x on 2 Lane maps when convincing your team mates lol. How this works is, I like to have 1 solid solo laner top, and have a strong 3 man bot, (Mage Tank Healer). As murky, I like to sneak behind the enemy top fort and clear the wave behind, so that our creep wave reaches the front towers and our top laner is able to put in significant siege damage on their structures. While I do this, I also get bribe stacks, and if the map is Braxis Holdout, and I take the 2 Siege camp. If we’re on the Left side, it will help our solo laner push harder top, or if we’re on the right, it will help bottom lane push further. The most common response to this, is that they send one from bottom to top to deal with you on top. In which case, I like make that person waste their time chasing me around, and depending on how well our top laner is dueling vs their top laner, I either help them or led the guy chasing me around to bottom lane where I go behind their fort and clear their wave from there. This strategy works great because it’s very unorthodox, and most probably players haven’t really dealt with this before. Creating chaos is one of your objectives as the Murky player.
V. Who’s Murky Good and Bad Against
Murky is a great solo lane specialist, but unfortunately he does have an Achilles heel, and that’s pretty much ANY strong, and fast auto attack hero. Here is a list of heroes I wouldn’t want to solo lane against.
Valla, Greymane, Raynor, Artanis, Sonya, Thrall, TB Varian, Gazlowe, Zagara, Alarak, Butcher, Cho’Gall, Zul’jin, Ragnaros, Rehgar *When enemy team plays double support*, Gazlowe, Genji, Srg Hammer, Chen, and Kerrigan.
And Heroes that I love to see on my solo lane are,
Anub’arak, Zarya, D.VA, Diablo, Johanna, Dehaka, Blaze, Nazeebo, Li-Ming, Malthael, Probius, Xul, Medivh, Yrel. KT, KTZ, Chromie, Mephisto
Heroes that I do OK in solo lane are,
Lunara, Falstad, Tychus, Jaina, Samuro, Gul’dan, Maiev, Honzo, Nova, Zeratul, Tracer, Junkrat.
Genji , Valeera, Cassia These guys are quite formidable in the solo lane, but How I feel about it, if they aren’t out killing my team mates it’s value for my team.
One of the great things about Murky is that he has a lot of viable talents, and a lot of murky players build them their own way that fit their play style.
In my opinion, this is one of the talents that make Murky an annoying force for the enemy team to deal with. Stealing camps left and right, and add value for the entire game.
I absolutely LOVE Tufferfish as it synergizes perfectly with Bribe, you can slime the wave once and leave the puffer fish and rotate to the next lane or rotate behind the enemy fort to catch the incoming lane. This talent I feel is pretty underrated.
My rule is, if I can’t get value out of my pufferfish in the solo lane, then I choose Slime Time as it’s also a great skill. For example, if I’m playing against a Yrel, or Leoric, where they’re able to very easily kill your puffer fish, then I get a significant value from slime time, as they are easy heroes to stack off.
Time to Krill
This is another underrated skill that I almost always pick. It’s amazing when you catch heroes off rotations, and makes them much easier to kill. Sometimes, Time to Krill dot was the difference between killing a hero or not.
Slippery When Wet
This talent is also very viable, I use to pick it 100% of the time, but it doesn’t fit my own play style anymore, but It synergizes great with March as you can position easily in team fights, and Rejuvenating bubble.
This is the lvl 7 talent that you see most Murky players pick, and they aren’t wrong by picking it. It’s a beast of a talent, but I personally almost never pick it. The only way that I pick this talent is if, I can’t get value out of my puffer, and if for some reason I’m facing a hero that I can’t get Slime stacks off easy like a Valla and my team doesn’t want to swap with me, then I go Black Lagoon to help battle.
I almost ALWAYS pick this talent, it’s great to snowball games or to catch up in a game and get a clutch pick on someone. This talent will secure most of your 1v1 Skirmishes you have.
I don’t like this talent as much as Octo-Grab but I do pick it sometimes. I have to be VERY desperate where the DPS in my team isn’t providing the DPS necessary to win the team fights. One of the reasons why I dislike March is because it has whopping 110 cooldown. In the early / mid game that’s very detrimental, say you do get a pick on someone; they maybe have a 15-25 second death timer, and objective pops. You now don’t have an ult to use for objective and they’re back as 5. You can’t use it freely in the early mid game, you always have to hold it for objectives.
This is my go-to talent, I feel it’s one of the talents that makes murky scary in 1v1 duels, and you don’t want your healer healing you most of the time, so this is a great way to self-heal yourself to keep yourself up in team fights.
A VERY strong power spike for murky, at this point you’re able to kill almost any squish in the game. I almost always pick this talent.
I almost never pick this talent, but this is a very popular Murky talent, for good reason. This talent is very viable, especially if the enemy teams comp is very auto attack heavy.
Wrath of Cod
Murky players sleep on this talent, I use to almost always pick this talent, as it gives such a huge blow up potential, 15% max damage over 5 seconds, is pretty nuts. I would pick this talent if I’m facing a Cho’Gall.
Big Tuna Kahuna
Omg Giant Murky, how can you not love this talent? This talent now allows murky to pretty much duel almost anyone in the game and out trade them. If you picked Rejuvenating bubble at 13, you are an un-killable Murloc, with a giant fish slapping on people. I pick this talent 100% of the time.
This is a very popular talent, and it’s very viable. In my opinion, it isn’t as good as Big Tuna, but it’s still a BEAST of a talent.
