This is my first guitar, so I would be really, really grateful for any kind of advice how to start learning to play it
I havent received the amp at the moment (should be here tomorrow) and I have no clue how to tune the guitar up (my friend will help me with it tomorrow too), but I would like to start practicing anyway.
Does any of you have any guides that I could read? Any recommended websites?
Currently, I read a relatively short guide that gives like 5 basic chords (in Polish http://www.chords.pl/kurs/chwyty_poczatkujacy/#h ) and found a nice youtube video + Show Spoiler + Im trying to practice these, but it's quite hard lol
I have some questions however: 1) Am I some sort of mutant and are my hands to big or something (actually, Im kinda big..), because I can barely put 3 fingers at the nearby strings to play the A chord (I bought the guitar over the internet; are there like "different sizes"? I mean, I always buy the biggest mice possible and all these logitech minis are laughable for me.. ) or should I just get used to it? 2) How should I practice, basically as I understand I need to learn the basic chords first and then try to focus on transitions. Is there any "practice material" to do so, or should I just run over from A to G? 3) Why are the tabs so confusing, the strings seem to be counted from the bottom to the top? At least in the guitar I have the thickest string is on top 4) When I hit the strings, to play the "A" chord - should I hit all of them? Or only 5 (without the thickest)? Or maybe just the strings that Im actually holding? 5) How to practice the transitions and "apm" in general? 6) What are the biggest mistakes to make? 1. no, that is pretty normal to have difficulties with the a chord, there are probably custom guitar sizes but i've never seen any. 2. ya learn the basic chords then just practice transitioning like a - d - c - g - e. make up random shit or learn basic song. 3. tabs are counter-intuitive for most people at first. tabs go from low to high, as in notes. so when reading a tab the lowest line will be your top string e, which is the lowest note. hard to explain without picture. 4.hit all but e string, which is the top one, the thickest. 5. basically just practice, learn an easy song 6. just google good guitar technique and follow 7. i honestly wouldn't buy any, everything you need is on the web 8. if you look at other tabs some have legends, or google tab legend. srry too lazy to type one up

It depends on what you want out of the guitar. Do you want to just cover songs, or do you want to write your own?
Tabs are really simple. Each line corresponds to a string, the number is how many frets from the top you hold the string down. 0 means you play with string without holding it down at all. ~ is a slide (moving your finger on the fret board) and other things like hammerons and palm mutes are generally defined at the beginning of the tab.
Just wait for your friend to come over tomorrow to teach you the basics (IE: what a slide is, what a hammeron/off is, how to pull strings, etc).
The first thing you'll notice is that your fingers really hurt when you first start playing. So just play thru the pain and you'll eventually start developing calluses. Try to do technical things, like moving up and down the fret board and strings. This will develop muscle memory, and will give you something to do while you have no idea what you're doing, but need to build finger strength.

Hi 8882, if you wanna learn the guitar, I really recommend going to about.guitar.com , it has these really sweet online lessons that progress until you're good enough to learn songs on your own. It has exercises, songs, lessons, everything. It also teaches you how to tune the guitar, hold a pick etc. By the way, if you want to get serious, I recommend you learn how to read musical notation although it's totally up to you. Also, if you have a mic, getting a guitar tuner for the computer helps a lot. Best of luck!

my roommate did this: I taught him how to read guitar tablature. So then he just went online and found guitar tabs of his favorite songs and just practiced playing those and he got better and better at guitar. If he didnt know how to do something, he'd just go on youtube and found a video showing how to do it.

I suggest you get the program Guitar Pro. Very useful for learning songs as well as making yourself practise tracks using a beat or just the metronome. At first if I were you I would just learn a bunch of easy songs to become a little familliar with the guitar. While you are doing that you can learn a few basic chordes A Am B Bm C Cm etc...

I looked at the rise against tab you put and that is another good reason to get guitar pro. When you look at a tab like you posted, unless you already know what the song sounds like, you can't really learn it, because it's pretty much impossible to tell what the duration of each note is. That song looks very easy though, if it is the x's that confuse you, it basically means block the string with a finger "probably your ring finger" while you play the other 2 notes around it.

The #1 rule of practicing guitar or any other instrument is USE A METRONOME, it helps amazingly to develop rhythm. Going offbeat a tiny bit might not matter when you're playing by yourself, but it is a huge deal if you want to play with anybody else.
When you're learning anything start ridiculously slow, so slow that you can play it 100% perfectly with no mistakes. Then gradually speed up until you can play it at tempo, then crank it up even faster. If you can play something 20% faster than it's "supposed" to be, playing it at tempo will be effortless.
If you have a some extra money consider getting a few lessons. One or two to make sure you're doing things right and not picking up any bad habits will help a lot.

also i found a good finger warmup to improve your "apm" is to have your four fingers split over 4seperate frets, doesnt matter much which ones, 4,5,6,7 is probably the best to start with? or around there. anyway; you use use two strings with finger 1 and 3 on one string and 2 and 4 on the higher or lower string and then you play 13 24 13 24 over and over as quickly as possible makign sure to stum each note. eventually you can go 13241324 at fret4 then move down one fret and go 13241324 again and keep moving down until you get to about 12th fret and then start again on two different strings it's sort of hard to explain and i can't really be bothered making a visual representation right now so i hope you get it?
tip: when you're doing it right you'll be strumming down on the higher string then down on the lower string then up on both then down on both etc so you can go really fast.
sorry if it's too confusing to udnerstand what i'm saying here but its really good for warmups/getting faster.

I dont play the guitar but I just wanna say to you that learning an instrument can be really frustrating - Dont get discourged cause you sound bad, it takes a lot of time and patience, stick with it!

Actually, the whole idea of playing with the left hand is hard for me to grasp at the moment, because my right hand has like 80 apm and left hand is like 40 T_T

I think I understand this, but one question, finger 2 seems to be DEAD, it completely does not respond to my thoughts. I mean, he moves with fingers 1/2 (basically up). No such problems with right hand however. Oh well, I will just need to practice..

btw. what does this "handle" thing do? The one near the bottom of the guitar. I think it makes this "shaking" effect or something, but am I supposed to screw it in as hard as possible? Ok, i just started learning guitar and i can tell you from experience that you cannot expect to play anything. You also need to put alot of time into learning how to play guitar, Like at least an hour every single day. What you should do is look up a bunch of songs (make sure when you play them you have them tuned to the right tuning or it will sound NOTHING like it). and try to play parts of them. jsut keep trying to do that and also JAM BY YOURSELF. play by yourself for like an hour a day just trying things and you will learn FAST.
I have only played seriously for like a month and im vastly better than i was when i started. I am writing two songs right now that are turning out to be really good.

In that song that you linked by Rise against, they use what are called octaves. you hold a note and then another one in a power chord but you skip a string and you mute the string you skip so its like this.

let me explain what the little # is. There are two types of tunings: flat and sharp # is sharp (you HAVE to get a tuner they are 20$) flat looks like: like:
sharp is like: # as you have seen.
another main thing is dexterity, which ONLY comes from playing ALL the time. this chord
in the song "everything went black" is still super hard for me to stretch to ( thankfully its only once in the song). practice chromatic scales. an easy on is 1234 on all 6 strings in succession.

With a pick, practice plucking up and down and play the chromatic scale (you just play each fret and go up, sometimes people go from 1-4 on each string and then switch) Also, some basic chords to start out with is G, C, D, Em. Learn to play power chords but don't just play that because that's boring. Some open power chords are E, D#/E, C#, B, and A. Have fun

The "handle" at the bottom of your guitar would be a whammy bar, which is used for various tricks and stunts. Basically it changes the pitch of the note/s your playing at the time by stretching or compressing the guitar strings. Though this can detune your guitar, it depends on how it's made. Check out something like For The Love Of God by Steve Vai for some of the crazier whammy stunts.
The two knobs would relate to volume and tone I'm guessing, I wouldn't move the tone one off max since I've never found a benefit to doing that.
The switch is changes which "pick up" is being used on your guitar. If you look around the area where you'll be picking you'd probably see two to three bars in that section followed by the neck. Different positions on the switch will change which pick ups activate to grab the strings vibrations which changes the overall sound of your guitar. Generally having the switch in a more backward position gives a more metallic tone and more towards the front adds a more rounded blues/jazzy tone.
If that's not too clear I'll try to fix that.

I just got the amp, it's roland cube 15x http://www.roland.com/PRODUCTS/EN/CUBE-15X/index.html.
The guitar is a black "sounder" (I think this is the model http://aukcje.gazeta.pl/show_item.php?item=361193565 ). Looks like some cheap Chinese guitar for me, but at least it has 6 strings and I got it as a gift My friend will visit me in the afternoon to tune it - he will do the drop D, recommended by Hypnosis.
Currently Im trying to get the "california punk"/rock sound of the amp+guitar combo. It's trial and error for me, any recommendations? I put the volume and tune knobs on the guitar on nearly max (as recommeded by FR4CT4L), and put the pickup on the bottom position (looking from the top of the guitar). But what about the amp? Currently I put distortion on (also have metal stack, metal and overdrive) with 9 in gain. As for the standard equalized I put 9 into bass, 2 into medium and 7 into treble. If I had any reference song, I could try setting it up properly - any recommendations?
As for the whammy bar, how strongly should I screw it in? I have no idea if it is working or not and I am afraid that I will damage the guitar if I screw it in too hard.

Could you clarify the some things for me? Im not sure if Im understanding them right or wrong
drop C tuning: D (thickest string - despite being "E" plays the "D" sound, when hit empty - these are the notes, yes?) A (plays the "A" sound when hit empty) F C G C (thinnest)
Basically, as I understand now, my friend will have to tune the guitar this way, so it gives the drop D sound. This can be done with this tuner thingie, which I will buy later.
Moreover: if there was only one string and the notation was D - 3 3 - does it mean that I hit the "D" (thickest) string while holding it on the third fret, then wait some time (according to the metronome) and hit it again (Im holding it all the time)?

drop C tuning: D (Thinest string) A F C G C (thickest string which was "E" in standard tuning and is now "C")
It's actually this way around, tabs are odd like that; Caught me out first time through as well. As a quick note when guitarists say Drop (Insert note here) it's in reference to how much lower the Thick "E" has been tuned. It's more prevalent in metal where there is a war to make your guitar sound more "brutal" than the last guys =P. Though these tunings have slight variations which are used in more folk styled songs. Such as CGCFGC tuning.
You've got the notation indicating a slide 100% though you'll have to change how you've read the tab to 7th fret on the thickest string and 5th on the one below and 0 below that. Then you hit them all at the same time.
In reference to something like this
E - B - G - D - A - D - 3-3-3-3-3
That does indicate you just replay the note. You'll have to listen to the song to get the timing though since most tabs just ignore it or try to show it with gaps.
You might want to reduce your gain to 6 or 7 when your starting off and practicing since high gain tends to fuzz out mistakes and notes that aren't hit quite right. Muck around with your medium though, newer guitar sounds drop it low like you have it but older sounds like AC/DC or Val Halen have it equal to or just below the treble.
A quick note on holding the pick. There is another way that's slightly different to how Hypnosis has it. It's explained excellently by Paul Gilbert here along with other mechanics of picking. A great watch which I recommend. He starts teaching at 1:10 after a little show off. Power Chords! These form the basis to like every rock song in existence. There's a theory to them that I don't know however they look like this.
Standard tuning:
E ---------------- B ---------------- G - 2 5 7 ---- D - 2 5 7 ---- A - 0 3 5 ---- E - --------------
and so on. Though notice the same hand shape will play all of them.
Drop D (will also apply to drop C,B,A and so on)
drop D tuning: E ----------- B ----------- G - --------- D -0 2 5 A -0 2 5 D -0 2 5
Here you can see the Dropped "E" string changes the power chords which it's involved in but doesn't change the ones it isn't involved in. Again the shape applies pretty much everywhere so I'd move it around and see which notes seem to follow others nicely and which sound horrid.
Whammy Bar. I'm not too much of a knowing guy here since my guitar doesn't have one but my friends does so I can't explain tricks and noises created using it. Though you twist it in a fair amount but don't let it get tight. It's better to have it loose since that allows it to swing easily so it drops out of the way of your picking when not being used. Also I wouldn't go nuts with it until you've got an better idea of it's limits.
As for songs to learn? In standard tuning I'd start with the first part of "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple, "All the small things" by Blink 182 is a nice intro to palm muting(which I'd be happy to explain later) and "Smells like teen spirit" by Nirvana since that'll require basic string muting and has a wikid easy but still great solo.
I could probably make a video tutorial on the weekend if I put my mind to it.

The reason i really like Drop C tuning is because if you just bar 2 strings like this:

you can also reverse the power chords so instead of 5 7 (5 on the 2nd string and 7 on the 3rd) its 7 5 (7 on the 2nd and 5 on the 3rd)..
There is a thing called tremolo picking which is realllly fast picking (its hard to do at first but once you can do it it is a very nice technique). This is normally portrayed as numbers on a tab really close together like this: |---------------------------------------------| |---------------------------------------------| |---------------------------------------------| |----------------------------555555555-| |-------------44444444------------------| |-3333333--------------------------------|
And if you are learning how to play any type of melodic metal or death metal or hardcore or metalcore (lol) there are tabs like this:

Although you need to hear the song for the exact timing just a heads up.
The little asterisks are what symbolizes a palm mute (sometimes its PM or a star)What you want to do for that is SLIGHTLY est your palm on the strings a few inches behind where you pic the strings. It creates a low thumping sound on the lowest string.

Sorry for not replying for such a long time, I was able to post but did not have any time to practice. My friend has tuned the guitar for me, however he recommended me to try the standard tuning first, as most songs use it (no idea how it is called, lol).
Im trying to learn blitzkrieg bop but I simply cannot make a single sound that even resembles the song T_T Any ideas how to setup the guitar/amp? And how to use the pick? I got guitar pro 5 and use some tab, but I absolutely cannot reproduce a even single sound. I think Im picking the wrong strings or something. Should I pick all of them? Only the ones that are mentioned in the tab? (Im talking about the first 7 sounds, not the first switch of the hand and palm mute http://download.yousendit.com/CB7296BA77E4D018 - tab is here)

I have absolutely no clue how to reproduce this effect and thank you very much for showing it to me, because that's the way I want to play actually I feel like a complete idiot, because Im wathcing this video in slow motion for the 4th time and cannot reproduce the sound at all. Is it caused by my pick? (I have 0,46) Because I tried playing with a coin and the sound is much better ("harder"). Im kinda worried about the strings however. And Im not even sure how many strings does he pick. I think I should configure the guitar/amp somehow, maybe the guitar is just shitty? (I think it's rather me not being able to play at all).

My friend brought some other guy who showed me that it in fact works and it works quite well, I was just too gentle when moving it up and down.

I think this is enough theory for me, time to practice, Im coming to the conculsion that: a) I am an idiot (nothing new) b) I lack rhytm c) Im coming to the conclusion that I am left handed, or I should hold the guitar the opposite way (right hand on the neck/frets)
