1th of april the new law "Ipred" started in Sweden. It gives the music / movie companies law support to track down downloaders IP-adress and such to ultimately sue them. This is a huge threat against the integrity and it has been debated for months in Sweden between everyone, on TV, EVERYWHERE.
The sad thing is that the politicians think of the Internet as a toy and as the downloads as "bad kids". If the kids are bad you can just take the toy away as a punishment. But today Internet is not a toy, everyone today do their bills and pretty much everything on the Internet. This is something that the extremely old politicians doesn't realize. By doing this, they ATTACK our whole generation!
"I see in your eyes, the same panic you get when your broadband fails you"
"One day may come, when we don't dare to download any more"
"When no one is seeding and Piratebay is shut down"
"But it is not this day!"
"In a time where greedy music companies are allowed to hunt us"
"When the free Internet that we has grown up with is overthrown, in debrises of ones and zeros."
"But it is not this day, this day we will fight back!"
"For all that you has downloaded with your Internet"
"I tell you, stand up for our community. Open your networks!"
More and more people has started removing all their "router defenses" (if you know what I mean) and naming it "Ipredia" so that soon everyone will soon be able to log into anyones wireless network anywhere! Then the companies cannot sue anyone because they don't know that it was you that downloaded! (could be anyone that connected to your wireless network)
Really though thats actually a scary thought although there are ways to mask your IP the Danger of being sued could outway the risk nonetheless.
EDIT: is this just in Sweden or is this something thats being debated worldwide? and how far would The Music / Movies jurisdiction go for sueing people? but I can see how if this goes through in one area of the world the idea can spread worldwide.

If you mask your IP you cannot be sued in any way. Sweden has the strongest hackers in the world We have every possible information there is about this (even more than the politicians)

Next thing you know it will be illegal to walk into a store and take things without paying.
They are allowed to check your email, your letters, everything. They don't need to have any evidence that you have been downloaded. Just do what they want to.

It's like you walked down the street and suddenly two police officers runs over to you and searches you for crack, or one day when you come home the police has searched your house.
This is information that would have been nice to include in the O.P.

well im assuming even with a masked IP there will be a way to gather the information as you connext to a seeder or something of that sort but im just speaking in theory i guess im by no means a pro at this sort of thing i just pirate with pride

You can also use a special proxy that masks your IP. Many people are using these today because of the law.

Or at least a link.
The information I wrote about is enough that anyone would think "discusting". How about I put it this way. Police would be able to search your house before they even believe a crime has been committed.
This is becoming a more common policy debate worldwide. Obama said he is in favour of keeping the internet the same as it has been but Canada has been leaning in the opposite direction. Not to this extent where people will be sued for copyright infringments (although that bill is already made and just waiting to be implemented by the Harper government) but just with the CRTC allowing ISPs to "traffic shape" or "internet throttle". This basically allows them to slow people down who use certain services (bittorrent) and in the future can lead to them slowing peoples access to websites not affiliated with them. IE: if TL isn't in link with rogers and your a Canadian with cogeco, TL loads slower for you than google.
Best way to fight is to voice your opinions (in mass) to the proper government authorities. For Canada it's the CRTC, Iunno what in Sweden though.
It's about the Swedish government talking about the Ipred law and about integrity. The Pirate party member comes and starts talking for integrity and democracy. The "normal" party members is like "But the American movie/music industriy is too strong!" The pirate party leader is like "You were chosen by the society! Then why are you here?" and most of them answers "Well, not to lose our carreer!" The pirate tells everyone to stand up against the big music companies and In the end everyone is shouting "integrity/freedom/democracy" etc ^^

?! really ..wtf.. do you think that could happen? Canada has always been really chill with downloaders...i hope it'll stay this way. im a huge downloader. i've probably downloaded for more than $1million worth of stuff over 10 years.
like everyone who's with Bell, i get ISP throttled for about 9 hours per day (max 30k/s) otherwise its prettyfast. but i dont really care because its all about hard drive space...how much can you have.. i dont really care about being throttled but i think the internet has to stay the same as it is right now, i.e. as free as possible. some stuff you just can't buy...for instance, im addicted to BBC documentaries, theoretically i could actually pay for those, but i mean...common. it'd be hard as hell to shop around and physically get your hands on all the titles that you want...
Being throttled sucks and enable to throttle they do DPI (Deep packet inspection) to see what kind of data it is. It's more invasive than you think. Harper tried to bring the bill I mentioned in in 06 and there was a huge uproar about it and it got pushed back. He's now trying to sneak it in under the shadows of all the other shit that's been going on. Our media sucks and doesn't really cover it that well but look at CBC for net neutrality issues. It's lame ;P and the CRTC sucks
Dude, being throttled?....again...who cares.. like many many canadians ....or at least quebecers, i get throttled at max 30k/s for most of the day. its not really an issue when you know you can launch your torrents just before you go to bed, and wake up the next morning with 10+ new GB's.
as far as DPI goes, again...who cares. i dont give a fuck if they know exactly what im DLing, everyone DL's the same stuff. Music, porn , and movies/videos. as long as they let me do it.
I just hope Harper wont be able to pass that bill that would let companies sue people for copyrights infringements. That's really the only issue.
What is ipred? Ipred is a Swedish law that allows record companies, movie companies, game companies, program companies (EX. Adobe, EA games, 21st Century fox, Virgin records.) IPRED makes it legal for them to take our ip-adress and request that our ISP gives them all the information they have on us (ex. Name, adress, phone number and so on)
What happens when they have my name/info? In som countries theyve sent out letters demanding you pay a sum, about (5000-10000 kr). But in extreme cases, like if youve downloaded and uploaded extremly much then they will probably file a civil suit (Civilmål) against you directly. A Civil suit will cost about 150,000 kr to 300,000 kr according to DN (Dagens nyheter)
Whats a Civil suit? A Civil suit is when a company or person sues another company or person for money. With other words, you cant be send to jail only be fined(Skadestånd). *You cant get a public defender (You have to pay for a lawyer) *If you lose you have to pay for their lawyer to. *They can demand a house search without you even knowing about it. (They can kick your door in any second looking for evidence)

Random jabber : Thx for the post. According to aftonbladet.se the swedish internet traffic was reduced alot since IPRED applied. 1-0 IPRED? Just adding one thing, if they want to do a search in your apartment for evidence, they must use the police, and if the police is going to do a search they need a warrant, and to get a warrant the sentance of the crime must be more then 2 years in jail.
So, no they cant just barge into your home uninvited just like that. WRONG Dosent work like that in Sweden...
"Sry to say this but in sweden the police actually dont need a warrant, if a policeman SUSPECTS SERIOUS CRIME they can just go into your home and search it THOUGH, the sentance for the suspected crime must be jail for them being allowed to do this ! "
This is more for you guys to understand this retarded law and some common deliberations about this law.

That's the direction it's moving in and you not giving a shit doesn't help By the time a person like you gives a fuck it's too late.
problem is, we (downloaders) can't transform ourselves into activists. We can't complain because infringing copyrights is inherently wrong. What do you wanna do? could it be a little ironic to go to the CRTC and ask them to remove the limit on the speed at which we are stealing copyrighted material? Hey sir, these motherfucking ISPs are throttling me when im trying to.....ooops ..nevermind. To quote you....its not like we're 'getting fucked' right now.
Downloading is one of my passions. it's crazy just to think about the ridiculous amount of super interesting stuff that's out there. BBC documentaries, mentioned earlier, is just one example. Stuff that for the most part, i would have never ever even come close to discovering without the invention of the internet. But its still borderline illegal. And for some particular content, even unethical. Like most people, i still do it because like most people, i just can't help it. I want the stuff so badly, and clicking 3 buttons is so easy.
Honestly, im STUNNED that we're still allowed to do it. Allowed is the word, because the highest form of enforcement that i've witnessed in Canada is random adds on TV saying how downloading//pirating is wrong and how we shouldn't do it. But its essentially nothing more than an awareness campaign. And that's why im stunned. Why is it so hard to just declare illegal downloading ..well...illegal. im stunned that they don't do anything about it. The GVT would be able to collect billions more in corporate taxes with strong music/movie/software industries.
Why they don't do anything about it here...and in most countries, is astonishing to me. There is a high concentration of hardcore jackasses in the legal and governmental line of work and that's probably the reason why nothing concrete is done. They take 9 and a half months to establish law # 422 B version 18D-3 paragraph 14 that says that Napster has to shut down because of some gay ass technicalities. Me? allright, im using Limewire and Soulseek. I'm not complaining about the situation. Im just highlighting its absurdities. I honestly hope the status quo will last...
Not everything we download is illegal and thus needs to be throttled and throttling effects more than just our download speed. The debate goes further when artists willingly put their shit out their to get sampled in hopes of people spreading it virally. There is a thing called the e-commons which is content for all which would still get indiscriminately throttled. Proper evidence hasn't even been supplied for the need to throttle. It's a bad thing. Just the fact our internet blows compared to most other countries and competition is discouraged sucks. Throttling is reducing the services we pay for. Piracy is a problem but cutting the balls of the internet isn't the way to solve it.
Not everyone pirates as well and downloading isn't the only thing throttling effects. In a house with routers and multiple systems just regular internet usage starts to suck. Throw in a PS3 and Xbox for me and my brother with streamed shit downstairs then it just blows. No downloading required.

Untrue. Part of a different law totally unrelated to IPRED and only directed towards foreign traffic passing through the borders of Sweden (which includes like 90% of Russian foreign communications through internet, most of Finland's communications etc...). Government agencies still have no right to listen in on domestic communications without a warrant.
At the very least you should make an effort to read up on things before posting this biased bullshit.

If there has ever been a time where the apocalypse was about to occur, it would be now.
There will be blood.
You're taking this way to lightly. Seen V for Vendetta? A law that lets the government control the population is just the beginning.
