Doing your seat belt only takes like 5 seconds yet so many people just forget about it. Seriously, it doesn't make you look cool if you don't have it on.
The reason I'm writing this is because two days ago, I got in a car crash. It wasn't big, but any car crash is bad. On top of that, most of the impact was on me while I was sitting on the front passenger seat. Whenever I put on a seatbelt, I always think what the chances are of getting into a crash are and that day, I was almost about to not put it on b/c I trusted the driver, a friend of mine. The way it happened was we were on a crowded highway and so the traffic was all messed up. The car ahead of us suddenly stopped and my friend saw it coming like 50 feet ahead; unfortunately the car was full (7 people with alot of luggage) and the car kept skidding although he pressed the breakes.
But please do your seat belts, it will save your life.
Glad you're safe. Putting my seatbelt has become a habit for me that during the rare occasion I don't have my seatbelt on, I feel really exposed and uncomfortable (even though the chance of a crash is relatively low).
People who don't wear seat belts because they think it doesn't look cool are suicidal tools. Props to you for being safe, glad you're okay, and props for making this blog.
Sometimes when I'm in a hurry I back my car out of the garage before putting on my seatbelt, and even that is enough to make me not feel comfortable. I ALWAYS wear my seatbelt and I wont drive anyone who doesnt put theirs on.

Seatbelts = mans best friend.
Ironic that you would call seatbelts man's best friend... Maybe I need to stop smoking weed.
I hate it when people don't put on their seat-belts. Regardless if it just hasn't become routine or habitual for them. Parents should force all their kids to wear them. It's stupid to do otherwise. @_@
i think we did all learn it in kindergarten. nevertheless, if everyone wore their seatbelt, about 5500 lives a year (just in the US) would be saved. that's almost twice the losses in 9/11, every year.
I always put on my seat belt, I dont care if others dont because its gonna save my life more times than not. And when i do not have it on i always feel so weird and like i could rocket out of the car so easily.
Glad you're ok, and that's something a lot of people (aka 99% of drivers) are too stupid to realize; you can't fucking follow another car 15 feet behind them at 75 mph. There's no fucking way you can react, brake, and stop, before hitting the car in front of you. This doesn't really have too much to do with your case because you were probably going slower but I always maintain like 100 feet if I can, although sometimes I get impatient and get a lot closer. But the time it takes to even react will take you farther than the distance between your two cars.

When I'm on a car and someone is driving it I feel exhilarated because I am probably drunk and high and death is not an option when you are in that state.
I hate it when i tell people to buckle up and they say "Oh ill be fine". I feel like saying "i dont give a shit about you i just dont want your bulbous watermelon head hitting me on your way out"

Watching crazy drivers everyday cut each other off, tailgate, change lanes without signaling, change multiple lanes at a time, and changing multiple lanes at a time without signaling cutting half a dozen cars just to tailgate another while speeding on the freeway.... is a regular reminder that no matter how awesome and safe a driver you have or are... gotta wear that seat belt.
I guess I was just raised that I never even give putting on a seat belt a second thought when I get into a car, it puzzles me that people consciously don't do it or even forget to do it, just occurs naturally with me. Am I the only person who thinks that the seat belt law in California/Oregon/etc is an absurd law? Not putting it on only endangers yourself and anyone who doesn't put it on is just asking for it, I guess it's just so that some dipshits will do something for their own good.

Like others said, I was raised to put on the seat belt immediately. It's an unbreakable habit for me. I also don't drive if the passengers aren't buckled up. They can get the fuck out if they don't like it (I've never had someone go to such lengths to refuse the seat belt however).

Very true. It's amazing how often I'll maintain what I consider to be the perfect following distance, and people continuously keep passing me on the right and then lane-changing in front of me. By far, the best thing to do is just shrug and fall back a few more feet again like you've been doing, but it's annoying to see because it happens so often.

So true. I hate it when drivers try to use a self-imposed label of 'safe driver' in order to justify driving that isn't defensive (such as not wearing a seat belt).

You get drunk AND high AND you don't buckle up? No WAI, you are so cool
i even wear my seat belt with me when im not driving
anyways, why the hate storm. Sometimes i dont buckle up, has nothing to do with being cool. I know i should and i TRY to do it unless i completely forget.. I dont see how its worse then say, smoking cigarettes. So if any of you smoke cigs and call me a retard for forgetting to buckle up - FUCK YOU
theres something you never thought about - if you get in a serious accident the outcome indeed will be different - those with no seat belt will simply die while the others will happily live a life of a vegetable
something that never happens when you wear a seatbelt - you dont miraculously fly out of the windshield and survive, instead your neck snaps
I used to wear seat belt, but I dont do it anymore because I want to be kool. A lot of kool young people these days they dont wear seat belt. They say, If we die we die, better die instantly than slowly.

Yup because flying through a windshield at 70MPH then landing on solid pavement is really survivable.

There's no guarantee you'll die instantly from not wearing a seatbelt, if anything it's far more likely to give you a slow and painful death than you know, just wearing a seatbelt.
I actually don't know anyone that doesn't wear a seat belt when they get in a car, it's like an automated response the second they plant themselves inside.
I've always worn one since I was a kid, and I remember when I was a kid there were a hell of a lot of ads on TV (I especially remember the McDonalds ad) telling us to buckle up, must have worked (well for my generation at least).
I didn't know it was fashionable to not wear seatbelts in cars, but definitely do that. And also, wear a damn helmet if you're biking. It's very common to see people without helmets when they bike, but if you're biking with cars, or on rough terrain, you really need to smarten up. There's no sense in draining public health care on preventable injuries, or risking your skull for that matter.
