'Tyrant' Jaedong successfully re-contracted with his original team Hwaseung OZ.
After the first negotiations with Hwaseung Jaedong declared free agency. However, all 10 gaming teams gave up on bidding for him, and he almost lost his life as a progamer.
However, during the 2nd negotiation period with his original team, Jaedong and his parents talked a lot and finally succeeded in re-contracting with Hwaseung.
Hwaseung's agent said "After endless attempts to re-contract Jaedong, we were able to come up with acceptable results for both sides." "I want to thank Jaedong's parents for negotiating without giving up to the end."
Since Jaedong succeeded in re-contracting, he will be playing next season as Hwaseung OZ player.
Thanks for fixing the typo!
The details won't be out until Sept. 3rd. I'll edit this thread as soon as they are out.
UPDATE 1: According to one netizen comment on the article, it was for 150,000,000 Won/Year + options = 200,000,000 Won/Year. Probably can't be trusted
Well, it sounds like Jaedong deserves more and it's not much higher from the original offer, but then you can't compare Hwaseung with a team like SKT. I'm just glad JD can play for at least a half-decent salary. I certainly think it's better than retirement.
UPDATE 2: go.go goes back to Hite! His interview here.
After deciding to become an FA to get an evaluation of his worth, Shine failed to get offers from any team, and decided to retire.
KT agent said, "He already decided to retire if no team offered him a position when he became a Free Agent. Our team decided to respect that decision."
Shine is 23 this year (probably Korean) and became a progamer in 2005 first half draft, and was a progamer for 5 years, but failed to make any outstanding achievements and decided to retire.
UPDATE 4: Fomos released another article about Jaedong returning to Hwaseung and how he feels about it. No additional information on salary/etc. though.
Main points were describing the situation and Jaedong saying: "I am happy I can continue to chase after my goals. Truthfully, I couldn't practice well because I couldn't grip the mouse well.* I think it was the hardest moments of my life. I know my parents are worried about me. This happened because they love me, and I am thankful. My coaches and teammates had hard time as well. They helped me as more than just a teammate, and my coaches gave me courage. I want to thank everyone who helped to resolve this. Since all the big leagues are over, I want to rest and go on trips. Thanks to my fans I were able to overcome this obstacle. Some people criticized that I wasn't professional because I told the media that I wanted to stay with Hwaseung, and some people called me immature, but I don't feel that way. I just wanted to work with the people I love, and I wanted to keep it that way. I think that is a lot more important than money. I want to thank again those who helped make this possible and since I get to work with the people I love, I will work harder and produce better results next season."
*Probably means he couldn't concentrate because his thoughts were on being with his team.
In bold: This is why I love Jaedong (No Lomo jokes please!)
Similar article about Shine main point was Shine saying:
"Even before I learned about the Free Agents, I was thinking of retiring. I hope people don't misunderstand and think I'm retiring because of FA. After playing for such a long time, I began to lose interest. I kept playing because it was my job, but I realize it would be a waste of time to keep playing with this attitude. The older progamers whom I was friendly with confirmed this. I'm thinking of enlisting for military service. I don't think I failed as a progamer, but I don't think I succeeded as well. I don't regret, but I am disappointed about my results. I should have made some achievements when I was still interested. Being a progamer is stressful and hard. You shouldn't become one unless you're into the game and will practice and work hard without anyone having to tell you. I met a lot of good people in progaming, so I feel like I got something out of being a progamer. I hope those who remain have more success than I do."
Free Agent Hyun re-contracted with his original team.
MBC Game agent revealed that they successfully re-contracted HyuN, after declining their first offer and becoming a Free Agent.
However, HyuN was not able to get an offer from other teams. He was able to negotiate with his original team afterwards and will play as an MBC player in 09-10 season.
The conditions of the contract is said to be the same as the one from their 1st negotiations.
UPDATE 6: According to naver sports and nate news Jaedong gets over 300,000,000 won, with salary and incentives. I don't believe this until fomos confirms it. Netizens in Fomos are flaming and debating whether this is true or not.
This news makes me sad.. i was hoping for a huge uprising against Kespa by Koreans the second the news on the Esports TV of OGN And MBC say: Lee Jae Dong Has failed with negotiations with his former team Hwaseung OZ and has quit being a progamer.
Then again it also makes me happy in the fact that Jaedong will continue his supreme reign on everything that is starcraft.
I Need the numbers... without know the amount of money I cant be happy.. In fact im upset I wanted him to retire cus he doesnt deserve 140M won (Oz said that they will offer the same that the first negotiaton)
I guess we'll have to wait till Sept 3rd to see how much they managed to negotiate for JD, but I'm glad he can finally put these matters aside and concentrate on what he likes most. He committed so much to become a top pro-gamer, I wouldn't have liked seeing him throw away everything. Who knows what the future may hold for him, but now he seems to be enjoying being with his teammates and coach. I hope he won't regret today's decision. Good luck JD
This article is way too happy when it looks like JD was crushed in negotiations. It's basically Hwaseung's original offer and JD got his parents to capitulate.
On August 31 2009 10:42 Scorn wrote: Wait, so the original offer was 140 mil/year plus bonuses bumping it up to 200, and the new offer is 150 plus bonuses up to 200?
Well, I'm glad he resigned. The $ amount he resigned for is kinda disappointing, but at least we won't be missing the best player on the scene next year.
Thank you for translating, this is such an important piece of news, really really happy that JD re-signed and is able to play next season. As selfish as it was, I didn't want him to retire...who really did. Well I hope the rumor of him getting paid 200 is at least true, 140/150 is too low, hopefully he still has those bonuses where he wins games he gets more money.
Now JD gets to play and stay on his team, lets hope his team gets their game on and lifts some of the burden.

The official details on his contract aren't out till the 3rd so take any rumors of what he received until then with a grain of salt.
YAY i'm so glad for him. About time that he gets some sort or raise. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Jaedong continues on his trek to becoming the most decorated player of all time!
honestly part of me wishes that jaedong got screwed over so netizens would overthrow kespa somehow. but another part is glad that we get to watch more godly JvZs.
On August 31 2009 10:39 Zinfandel wrote: The Dong makes $160,000 USD/ year to play StarCraft?! HOLY... DREAM JOB!
Bisu makes almost double that, and Nada's had a contract for almost double that since 2007.
If those netizen comments are true, I must say I'm kind of disappointed. JD's parents basically caved, and Jaedong's still underpaid (though not nearly as much as before).
On August 31 2009 11:17 0neder wrote: What a world we live in, where $160,000 a year is somehow slavery...
It may not be fair market value, but don't call it slavery. That's just silly.
Obvious hyperbole, the point is that Jaedong is still underpaid by a fair amount (he could reasonably be making double that offer). Even a lowball estimate based on players that aren't Bisu or Flash still would put his value somewhere around 160-180M Won (I think it was said somewhere that Calm makes about 130M).
Although I am not the biggest Jaedong fan, this is great news for Starcraft. To have one of the top players taken out during his prime would've been a shame. Hopefully this news will create even more appreciation for our favourite players and their commitment to Starcraft.
So now we have to wonder what Midas's and Hyun's fates are.. Hyun I could honestly care less for, but it would be a damn shame if Midas was forced to retire :l
There was no way they were going to let him get DQed on a technicality. Any other player but Jaedong right after he wins and OSL would have been screwed but there was just no way they were going to force him out now...
He's back on, and 150 is better compared to what he was getting before... Well, I hope he can push it up higher next time, but for now it seems like it's all good news.
On August 31 2009 12:14 Zozma wrote: He's back on, and 150 is better compared to what he was getting before...
Actually, it's not. The lower end bonuses Jaedong had were REALLY easy to get(something like 10 mil for reaching10 PL wins). So in other words, it would only look good on the surface. But in the end Oz is still going to pay roughly the same amount as their original offer.

I'm actually really curious about those bonuses. Jaedong has a Golden Mouse, the highest Kespa rank by a pretty convincing league, and very arguably the best player in the world. WTF does he have left to do that could warrant a bonus?
Also, shouldn't him winning the Golden Mouse between the original offer and now be worth more than 10M?
Im glad to hear he is getting more money, also I am sad to see shine retire. Even though I do not know a lot about him I am always saddened when a pro retires, like GGplay, who is one of my favourite players. Gl in life shine.

So after all that Jaedong only makes 10m more a year? 140m to 150m base. (Which isn't even 10k btw.) Options are like if he wins this league or performs well he can make up to x amount. I hope Oz lost a lot of fans for this whole thing.

Well I think 140-150 is still much better than his previous salary before the FA thing, which I believe was like 65 mil?

No one knows what his actual contract is until the third.

Previous Salary was 140m which caused all this uproar in the first place.

Original base salary and bonuses add up to 200m won.
Original from thread 140m + 60m options = 200m Speculated current (Probably not to be trusted.) 150m + options = 200m
If that ends up being true which is speculation at this point, that isn't a victory at all. That's just we'll say it's 10m higher so we can say Jaedong wins and don't lose all our fans.
my only regret is if jaedong is still being payed like a sub par gamer, it is really a shame. I can only hope that OZ has the ability to respect jaedong for the caliber of player that he has come to be, and pay him accordingly.

How is that good? That's completely against the purpose of free agency. If they had made offers, it would've forced Oz to pay him even more. Instead, the power still lies entirely with the corporate side of SC and this outcome didn't change that at all. It's good that he's where he wants to be, but the fundamental problem with Kespa and Korea SC still exists.
It's very sad he doesn't get paid like the baller and bonjwa that he's become. That being said the bonuses that the contract includes are basically garaunteed with a player of JD's calibre. So basically he gets paid 200 million won per year which is still far below bisu's salary i believe and JD>Bisu and so life sucks.

Most of the other progamers work 10-12 hours a day in an environment where you have to be competitive to survive. Giving up most else during that period to even have a chance to get good. (I'm not just talking about things like girls and friends, I mean like giving up the ability to go outside. To have any sort of hobby.) For less than a McDonalds salary for the majority of players. Then the few players that get paid something in comparison are few and far between. It's not everyone that gets paid 160k it's like less people than I can count on my hand for all the progamers.
It's like working for 5-10k or less in an area that has the same or higher cost of living than America. And the very best you could do as a brass ring is be one of the maybe 5 people or less that get paid 160k or more for like a year or two or however long you can put up with practicing 14-16 hours a day before you burn out physically or mentally.

So refreshing in the days of modern sports with players and whole teams changing locations/sponsers all the time that a player is willing to be faithful to his team and team mates. The money truely isn't anything substantial. Someone like jaedong will be comfortable in life no matter what. Mental health is much more important than a salary.
Besides 150,000 grand a year to play broodwar around people you regard highly as your friends is pretty fuckin awesome.

Compared to Jaedong, there are people in 3rd world countries working in sweatshops in a worse environment, getting worse treatment. And they make less money than you or I spend on breakfast. And I wouldn't even call that slavery. Although it comes close.
As much as Jaedong's getting butt raped in contract negotiations, he's still getting paid quite a bit for his services. It just so happens to be a lot less than he would've gotten in a fair market. That's all.
Good to see him not retiring. He's just such a good and accomplished player, it would have been sad to see him go, after winning the golden mouse. Hope to see more beastly performance from him in the future!
I knew it! I knew that FA was the reason why Jaedong wasn't practicing much or getting enough sleep. I was wondering why his WCG performance was a little sloppy (Luxury and especially against Stork). I guess he just had a lot going through his mind which I don't blame. I'm happy for Jaedong in a way that he gets to be with his team.. now we just gotta wait and see how much he, I mean his parents, negotiated for.
"My coaches and teammates had hard time as well" cracked me up, because all I could see was Lomo in that famous picture with his mouth open. Poor worried Lomo all alone in bed at night.
Also funny how Jaedong says "..and since I get to work with the people I love, I will work harder and produce better results next season." - How do you post better results than this season? Take the triple? I'll be looking forward to that!

Well, he can run himself into the ground, like Flash almost did last season.
I really do wish that top progamers take more of Stork's "I only practice when it matters" attitude. No point in practicing hard for mid-season PL games when it just tires you out. There are things more important than starcraft. Like WoW and One Piece.

I remember Jaedong saying that he feels like he belongs to OZ, as that's where he started his professional career, so I'm happy for him being where he wonna be. Now if Lomo and Backho would improve a little, they could protentially win the next pro league.
I think the most critical thing is the length of the contract. He went into the negotiations with NO LEVERAGE. He could either accept the offer or quit, so if it's just a 1-year contract, then I think that this is the ONLY move Jaedong could have done. Otherwise his "challengers" the next season would be in the CSL (heh. hehehehe. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Ohh good lord, just thinking about that... hehehe).
This gives him and his parents (which are terrible agents so far) a while until they can (deservedly) bleed Jaedo... I mean Hwaseung Oz dry, or organize a player's strike. As the second most popular sport in South Korea, the top tier players should be making millions of dollars.
A comparison: in Israel, Basketball is the second most popular sport - lagging far behind the first. With many leagues spanning from amateur to pro-level (with the best team being one of the top squads in Europe). Even the greatest superstar in Starcraft makes far less than the top tier players in Israel (not even talking about the superstars).
Israel's total population: under 7 million people. There are no TV channels dedicated to basketball. Average top-tier salary: $400,000 (up to over 3 million for the highest payed player).
South Korea's total population: nearly 50 million people.
It's more than reasonable that due to the massive (in comparison) market, the average top-tier salary should make the players millionaires, but instead Jaedong is making money that should be the average for players that are 4th-5th in their team's rotation. That's the money Hyuk should be making. The players are not getting close to their worth from a sheer economic standpoint... Even if the teams weren't massively backed by corporations. TV channels and advertisers are making a fortune on their backs.
... so yeah, the players aren't poor. This is no sweatshop wage. But it is also extremely unfair. Jaedong should be leading the strike. A player's union is a necessity in this case, and the people who should be organizing this are the veterans and parents of the players, and work to establish a much higher minimum wage, flexible FA and contract rules, revise the draft system, and force KeSPA to include players' representatives in every single internal deliberation.

Entirely possible. Just because Oz put in some bonuses doesn't mean they're likely to be reached.
Simple example. If Oz give Jaedong 20 mil for each SL win, technically Jaedong can earn 120 mil from 6 possible SL titles next year. But realistically? No.

How else are they going to get young kids to spend thousands of hours playing a game that they're never likely going to make any money off of? Got to show them the dreams of being a star so they can toil away for free as practice partners and B-teamers.
Yay at this, JD will bring exciting and imba games to next Season! LE JAEDONG FIGHTING! + Show Spoiler +

Then again it also makes me happy in the fact that Jaedong will continue his supreme reign on everything that is starcraft.
And WTF about the Free Agency? They should call it the "Free Agency Kabuki Dance" what it is. A lot of smoke and mirrors and large dick up the player's asses.

Wouldn't trust this yet- makes no sense why it wouldn't be on fomos.
Entirely possible. Just because Oz put in some bonuses doesn't mean they're likely to be reached.
Simple example. If Oz give Jaedong 20 mil for each SL win, technically Jaedong can earn 120 mil from 6 possible SL titles next year. But realistically? No.

If the bonuses are anything like their original ones, Jaedong will easily meet them all.
Man this FA has completely failed. How many players have actually been traded?! Oh well it's good to hear that Midas and Hyun were able to renegotiate something and continue to play.
300 mil for Jaedong sounds completely bogus. Jaedong's parents just asked for 180 mil, why would Oz deny that, and then come back and offer JD 300 mil after no other team picked him up?

150 + 50 bonus mil sounds a lot more likely.
It depends how you see that. Before NaDa has the double of JD's salaray given that achievements he did. Jaedong can be in the same case. Now he has the gold mouse and he is ready he can win another OSL again. Thanks to him, Hwseung improved a lot. So he really diserves more I guess.

I'm not saying he doesn't DESERVE it, but why would Hwaesung Oz offer him 300 mil when he and his parents were going to be happy with 180 mil?

Maybe he's a valuable practice partner.. or they are giving him a chance to pick up his play to a decent level and if that doesn't happen, they'll just let him go
It would be really nice if Midas came back into form

Unfortunately, there is still none at the moment. I'm sure someone will translate and post the info once it gets released. I would do it myself had it been out already but I'm about to sleep soon.. zZzzZZz~

How could you have come to TL a week after the OSL Finals, clicked a thread that is obviously about Jeadong, and have expected not to find out whether he won the Golden Mouse?
Fucking stupid.
The allies also won world war 2 ViruX. Sorry for ruining it for you.

Stay away from the TV. Chances are there are spoilers on every entertainment channel. And sometimes even horror of horrors - History Channel.

Still hasn't been posted yet buddy.. I'm sure it will be revealed sooner or later. I'll post when it comes out although I'm almost certain l10f will beat me to it since he's such a speedy gonzales.

I thought we had established that Nada was getting a lot more than Jaedong?

Do you know the requirements for another team to pick him up?
The way the whole "Free" Agency system, with all its liabilities and fees, works, essentially means that that almost no team is ever going to be able to afford to hire a top-tier player that goes FA because of the costs.
It's all a miserable big sham by Kespa/the progaming teams with the intent of creating an illusion of the players getting a bit more power/leverage through the possible "choice" of being able to switch teams, but with the way the system currently works the reality is that the only choice players will have (well, save for maybe a proven up-and-coming who has his breakthrough just in time before his choice for FA) is to either renew their old contract, or retire.
