The grand finals for SSL 8 are going to be held at the Jamsil Student's Gymnasium, notable for being the location for the last Brood War Starleague finals with the Tving OSL. The venue seats 5500 to 7000 people, depending on configuration.
Finals will be held on May 18update: June 1st. Admission is free.
The following is a loose translation of Sonic's post, courtesy of Kimoleon:
5500 seats, with floor seats ~7000. may 18th 7pm kst time it will start. let's keep bw alive, and show it with our actions yo, free admissions, ogn's final bw starleague place will be our new beginning!
Holy. Fuck. This is amazing <3 Brood War forever! I wish I could go Sonic is totally amazing~~I hope there are thousands of live viewers and even more people watching the stream! There better be an epic match too~~huge thanks to anyone who helped this go through!
awesome! I'm still wondering if they can fill that however it is free admission after all and at decent timing. I think if he can send out the message to a lot of people, they'll be able to fill it np!
Last time there was right around 1000 people attending. IF we get a non-mirror maybe they can make it somewhat work? I cannot hope for 7000 people to show up, but im really hoping it will !
On April 09 2013 18:44 Liquid`Nazgul wrote: wowww can they fill that?
That remains to be seen ^^
To put some things into perspective, Ro16 of SSL8 had over 15k viewers on Afreeca which is more than SSL7 Grand Finals, so the numbers are definitely growing. To be honest, I'd be happy even if just floor seats are filled, which is around ~1,500 people!
if they can make those bw vips come from the now sc2 team houses and kim carrier can make ogn to broadcast it (pretty unrealistic but not totally, if it gets hyped quite a lot in the next few weeks. this announcement triggers some attention for sure in media and then people and then media again), then bw might truly come back.
unfortunately, I think the attendance of the finals is heavily dependent on the finalists--kind of like how pdpop had a bit of a smaller crowd for hydra vs great (and smaller venue, though I dunno when the venue was booked for that--small crowd may have been due to small venue).
because although larva/mong probably would pack out the afreeca crowd, a hiya vs movie finals would actually pull out a lot of people I imagine. But if it turns out to be sSak (very likely imo) vs by.hero, even though it's actually two of the best players it may not fill it up.
So I keep flip flopping between super duper optimistic and a little pessimistic. But insane that they have this venue in the first place

In my overly-optimistic (and probably wishful-thinking) view, if everyone living in Korea would treat this as a "do-or-die" event for BW - where they could potentially harm the future of BW by not attending - then it will be a success. Hopefully most Koreans will share this view and at least try to attend, regardless of the finalists.
For those working in Korea, that's one of our rare 3 day weekends. Last one was fun, I'll try to get out to this one. I'll also try to get better photos than last time.
That's sick! Such a nice time of year for Jamsil, too. If I was still in Korea I'd go~!
If there's even a remotely decent turnout, it could set a precedent for the future of professional Brood War. If you're in Korea and a BW fan, you're pretty much obligated to go
Itembay really throwing their weight around, don't think it costs that much to rent it out but its the message they are sending with this that counts. Good times
I don't think they could have picked a better location for this. The fact that it was the last OSL final venue is sure to be significant, especially if this kicks off a huge BW revival.
A big stadium like this require a very good finals to attract the crowds or at least a lot's of hype behind it . Here's to amazing finals and bw forever !.
Hmm, this is in the community news section but it doesn't show up on the sidebar for me (I have to click the community news section to see this thread).
Oh my god, I wish I could go! I hope they fill that place. It would be an epic rebirth for BW. But even if they get 500-1000 people, that would be huge.

I just saw this on FB and was literally coming here to post, IS THIS WHAT I THINK IT IS??? If so, holy shit that's amazing.

Agreed, a wonderful move by Sonic if it happens. This just gets better and better!

Short version: Yellow has accepted to attend for a legend match. No clue who the opponent is yet, sonic is waiting for an answer from a "terran champion" - answer expected to come in tomorrow. Anyway, he asks for everyones cheers and strength to fill this glass of spilt milk(water) up again(I assume he's talking about bw, damn Koreans and their idioms)
I somehow hadn't seen this till now. This is very definition of "HOLYSHIT OHGODOHGOD IM SO HYPED AWESOMEAWESOMEAWESOME I CANT WAIT AUWTYDBGAIJWDM" -- which coincidentally was the sentence that looped in my head as I read through OP's post.
Airplane tickets to Korea, why you so expensive??? !
Its been a long time since I've been this hyped for a BW event. Can't wait to see how this final shapes up! Yellow vs. boxer/nada/oov/anyone really would be amazing!

Yellow resigned as coach of his team about a month ago. He's doing some shitty K-Drama to make ends meet these days.

This makes me sad T_T. Is there an announcement anywhere for it? I assume it'd be on fomos or something, but leaguepedia and the xenics websites don't really have posts about it (or maybe its because I can't read korean)
I think it's funny that sonic says liquid is an US organization (I think) ^.^, I don't think he really knows it half european

Why aren't their torrents of the K-Drama he's in?!?
The swedish brood war initiative is making posters advertising the barcraft / brood bar of this event. I need to know a rough estimate of when the finals will begin to be broadcasted. Is it 19:00 KST? Please help!

Hmm, haven't really followed anything since PL/OSL died. Can anyone familiar with the "amateur" scene fill me in? Are the favourites mostly all retired A-teamers or have random no-namers from before taken the spotlight?

Either way as long as it's not a mirror, I'm in
Mostly it's A-teamers. Some other gosus are Mong, Sky, and sSak.

a lot of ex pros like Hiya, Sea, Ssak, Iris, By,hero, Movie, Shuttle, Pusan, Tyson, Killer and a lot of skilled practice partners and on top of that you have a couple of amateurs
I'm confused as to why Sonic would change the date to conflict with the GSL finals. Not sure how much it's going to affect the actual turnout / viewership in Korea, but the foreigner viewership will probably be a lot less now
Well don't see how it is a problem with the conflict between the two programs because for certain the turn out will depend on Broodwar fans of the old who still want to watch nada and yellow since it's korea we are talking about many loyal fans should be available to watch it .
Gsl finals is interesting ....but my take on it sonic could have push it backwards to the date maybe to give more time for fans to be prepared or for the production crews to do more planning and other thing that maybe needed to run the events. Don't think he wanted it to clash the supposed grand gsl finals on purpose though (In my opinion).
On the issue about foreigner viewership will be less now I don't think sonic is going to have any loss even if the viewership is drop because of the clash between the two finals . Vods will be available if you can't view both at the same time

he changed the final date.
That's inconvenient... Guess we'll have to redo our plans for a live viewing in Stockholm. And if the GSL finals are at the same date then moving it to 1st of June makes little sense to me. Of course I don't that the amateur BW-scene depends on all the GSL-viewers showing up, but it's still a pity that people will be forced to choose between the two.
Whatever, I'm sure Sonic has his reasons, and I'm sure the finals will be just as epic even if we have to wait 2 weeks longer then expected
its especially weird because LoL has its semifinal on friday may 17 (since my initial assumption was that it must have conflicted with kim carrier in LoL or something)
because it seems out of sonic's way to reschedule jamsil's gymnasium, because I imagine something as large as that wants a months notice for the scheduling. Its odd to say "we'll cancel the stadium on the 18th but move it to the 1rst!"
ah well, really hope them yellow and nada fans pack the place, because surely more than a couple korean starcraft fans will be torn between the bogus vs other kespa player (sHy) in gsl finals and the hiya ssak finals* :p
Sonic's changing the venue for the finals. Not announced the new place yet, but will do so after Ro4. His main reason was that he realized it'd be too hard to fill the stadium.
I'm actually kind of glad to hear that, even with the showmatch news with nada and yellow I was a bit worried. My biggest concern with Sonic is that he goes too big too fast, he's already made pretty big leaps in production quality.

Also foreigners in Korea who would like to experience a not horrible GSL finals (Ror0 winning) and some BW action - especially now that it involves Reach.
