This has been an exciting year for the Brood War community. 2012 ended with little besides the conspicuous absence of the recently euthanized professional scene. Yet players worldwide kept on playing, and the competition continued. Sonic's Starleagues have grown in size and recognition, reintroducing us to a Korean scene of unmatched skill. And since the introduction of the TeamLiquid Legacy Starleague at the beginning of the year, the foreign scene has learned the names and styles of the talented heroes that continue to fight on the plains of Aiur. Season Three starts next week, bringing with it another opportunity to unseat the undisputed king of the foreign scene and reigning champion, the Hungarian Zerg known as Sziky. On the line is a $500 prize pool and a last shot at direct qualification for the $2000 championship.
There will be no lack of excitement when the final regular season of the tournament starts next week. Thank you for supporting TLS, without our viewers none of this would be possible.
Prize Pool
The third season of TLS will have a prize pool of $500.
Following this tournament there will be a championship event with $2000 up for grabs!
Format
The third season of TeamLiquid Legacy Starleague will have a similar format to the second season. Season 3 will have four qualifiers. Players who reached Round of 16 in TLS Season 2 will be seeded to the Round of 24, and the top four from TLS Season 2 will be seeded directly into Round of 16 in Season 3.
As in TLS Season 2, only winners of four qualifiers will be seeded directly to the Ro24. The remaining eight players from qualifiers will be filled based on points accumulated during the qualifiers. Joining the players who qualify through qualifiers will be 12 players who were at 5th-16th place in the TLS Season 2.
In TLS Season 3, each Ro24 group will be played with best-of-1 and each Ro16 group will be played with mixed best-of-1 and best-of-3 Dual Tournament (ODT) format, seeding players into an eight man best-of-5 single-elimination bracket.
Qualifier Information
TLS S3 will have a total of four qualifiers. Two qualifiers will be held this weekend (September 14 and 15), and two the following weekend (September 21 and 22). The games for this week's qualifiers will be held:
Check-in for each Qualifier starts at 14:00 GMT (+00:00), and closes at 15:00 GMT (+00:00) on each day. Be sure to show up and be ready to play your matches!
Note: Please note that the time of the qualifiers is now one hour ealier than it was in TLS S1 and S2.
As mentioned earlier, there are 12 places attainable through 4 open qualifiers. 4 positions for the winners of each qualifier, and another 8 to those who earn their place through the points system.
Remember that only one player makes it out of each qualifier this time so the finals are of extreme importance. There will be a one week break after the qualifiers and Round of 24. In this week, we'll do a group selection and decide tiebreakers, if necessary.
Full rules and details including how points and tiebreaks are handled can be found on the registration page, as well as posted below. It is your responsibility to read and adhere to these rules.
One of the finest maps of 2008, and a staple in competitive foreign Brood War, Destination makes its debut in TLS next week. This well-traveled battleground will encourage mech play from Terran, lurker contains from Zerg, and whining aggression from Protoss. This two-player map offers ample opportunity for cheesy openings and strongly favors well-prepared players.
Though perhaps the least recognized map in the TLS3 pool, Polaris Rhapsody brings some healthy variety to the competition. This 2010 Proleague map provides multiple expansion patterns in addition to a narrow path directly between naturals. Polaris Rhapsody is the second two-player map for the season and is historically strong for protoss.
Beautifully asymmetric and visually complex, Neo Aztec is perhaps the most aesthetic entrant to this season's map pool. This three-player map may draw players to heavy drop play to avoid a heavily contested center. Pun intended. This updated version attempts to address a perceived imbalance against Terran, but should still be a welcome sight for the tournament's Zerg players.
Andromeda introduces to the map pool a Proleague stalwart and fan favorite. This battleground encourages more unorthodox openings, such as Corsair/Reaver PvZ and one-base tech TvZ. Andromeda is a well-balanced map that tends to host long macro games in all match ups.
The map that needs no introduction returns this season. Fighting Spirit encourages long macro games and is widely considered the most balanced and standard map in existence. While no race can be said to be favored on this jungle map, ladder warriors will be at home on this popular practice arena.

You can qualify for one of the 12 spots by doing the following: 1. Winning a qualifier tournament. 2. Placing in the Top 8 of non-winners (ranking points).
Ties are broken with a playoff.
Who can qualify for the 12 spots?
A player is eligible to play in the TLS if:
He grew up in a location without a professional StarCraft scene; OR
He currently resides in a location without a professional StarCraft scene and is not affiliated with a professional StarCraft team; AND
He does not have connection lag that would significantly impact quality of play
Saturday, September 14 - First qualifier Sunday, September 15 - Second qualifier Saturday, September 21 - Third qualifier Sunday, September 22 - Fourth qualifier
If I win a qualifier can I play in the others?
No, you cannot. You cannot secretly play under another name -- this will result in disqualification from the TLS and future TL events.
What about banned or previously disqualified users?
Banned users (for any reason) cannot enter these tournaments. Do not try to circumvent by creating smurf accounts. We will find you, and you will be disqualified from the TLS and future TL events.
Can I enter all four qualifiers?
Yes. Anyone who can enter one qualifier can enter all four. You do not have to play all four, but your chances increase as you play more.
Rest of the tour will use all five maps, which are from the latest iCCup map pack (2.5) and are available to download here.
What about hackers / cheaters / abusers?
Any sort of cheating may result in disqualification from the TLS and from future TL events. We take cheating very seriously, and we will hand out harsh punishments.
Why don't you allow everyone including Chinese/Koreans to participate?
The unfortunate truth is that we aren't prepared for the logistics of such a situation. We haven't run a tournament using this system in Brood War before and frankly we're rusty at administering these sorts of events. Having a large group of players who may have difficulty communicating with players or admins is not a scenario where we can guarantee success at this point. Plus, they have SOSPA and the SSL.
ODT? How does that work?
OGN Dual Tournament, the format where the group starts with players paired off into two sets of games. There is another set of games between the winners and the losers of the first games, with a final tie breaker match between who wins those. Text is a pretty poor way of describing this so check out this chart for clarification. The rest of the event itself will be styled very similar to the MSL
Download the TLS Plugin for Chaoslauncher 1.16.1. Save this file into the folder containing the Chaoslauncher application; or if you're using wLauncher, save this file in the Plugins subfolder of your wLauncher folder.
Run Chaoslauncher/wLauncher as an administrator. Check the box next to TLS Plugin (1.16.1). Click the start button.
The TLS server will be listed in the Multiplayer screen. You can create an account using the in-game interface.
Make sure that you host your games with #LL or #L2 in title to enable Lan Latency.
Format
Single-Elimination Tournament
Bracket will be displayed on TeamLiquid. Participants must log in to view opponent IDs to contact their opponents for matches.
Players must contact each other through in-game chat and arrange a host (unless Ro4 or later).
From Ro8 on, TL referees will host the game.
Winners will report results and upload replays after each round.
If a game's results are disputed (both players report win), Tournament Referees will check replays and determine who advances.
Best of 1 until Round of 8.
Best of 3 in Ro8, Ro4 and Finals.
TLS Qualifier Rules
Players are permitted to stream or cast games up to the semifinals, streaming or spoiling the semifinals or final series will result in disqualification.
Players may not have any stream open in the background when playing.
Any violation of TLS Qualifier Tournament Rules may result in game forfeit and future suspension from TLS Qualifiers and other TL events.
No cheating in any way. This includes any sort of hack or illegal program and receiving messages from friends watching the stream. This also includes account sharing or playing under an ID that you did not register under.
Players must set status to /dnd during tournament matches.
Players must arrive within 10 minutes of the end of the previous round. After 10 minutes, every 10 minutes is a game loss for the player who is not present. Ex: with one player present for 20 minutes, 1-0, 30 minutes, 2-0.
If your opponent is not present for 20 minutes, please PM TLTourAdmin.
Players may change race between games.
Players may not play in another tournament that conflicts with TLS Qualifier play time. Referees may disqualify players that delay the TLS Qualifier due to scheduling conflicts.
Referees may warn and disqualify players for chat violations, including excessive or abusive insults toward players, observers, or referees.
Maps and Host Rules
Games will be hosted on one of the approved maps from the iCCup map pack.
In a Bo1 games, host must create on designated map for that round.
In a Bo3 games, referee will host all three games in the exact order posted below.
Maps cannot be played twice in a series.
It is the player's responsibility to check the map pool. If a player protests an incorrect map after playing a game on it, the game will not be replayed.
If neither of the players can host, contact the referee who will host the game for you.
Map Pool: Qualifiers will use three maps that will be interchanged each round (in Bo3 games all three maps will be used). Map order for each round is given below:
Download: The maps used in this tournament are from the latest iCCup map pack (2.5) and are available to download here.
Disconnects and Lag
Due to lag conflicts, we may swap players in the bracket to resolve issues. This means that even if you receive a bye you may be swapped in for a match that round. This will not increase your number of games played.
If your opponent is disconnecting, players should take a screenshot of the lag screen and contact the tournament referee.
If a disconnect happens in the first five minutes and there has been no player-opponent contact, game will be replayed.
In a Bo1, if a disconnect happens after player-opponent contact, disconnecting player may receive a loss. The Referee will make the final decision after reviewing the screenshot and replay.
In a Bo3, if a disconnect happens after player-contact, player must contact Referee immediately and Referee will decide how to proceed after reviewing the evidence.
Referees and Tournament Administrators reserve the right to overturn results or award wins based on evidence they see.
In a disconnecting situation, both players can agree to a regame.
If there is persistent unplayable lag (lag screen comes up more than once in a short time), players must contact a Referee who will decide how to proceed.
Coverage and Observer Rules
TL will officially cast both semifinals and the finals.
No observers are allowed in games other than those designated by TL.
TL will designate "approved" observers who will be allowed to observe and broadcast games.
TL referees are also allowed to be in game.
There will only be a maximum of one observer in each match.
If a non-approved observer joins the game and the host starts, game does not count.
If game lags with an approved observer in game, that observer must leave at the request of a player. If a TL referee is in game, he will make this decision.
Observers and broadcasters are subject to the same rules for cheating and abuse as players. TL may suspend observers from future TL events if violations occur.
Any rules not covered by these posts will be handled according to the TSL handbook
Please note the change in times this season: - Qualifiers are played one hour earlier than in TLS Season 1 and 2 - Broadcasts are two hours earlier and are now at 17:00 GMT (+00:00)
Wait why only 4 qualifiers? I thought we were having 6. What ever happened to the other 2? Did staff not like that system anymore? Did the amount of BW players drop or something in comparison?

It's because 12 players from TLS2 are already seeded into ro24 ^^
Wow excellent choice of maps. Destination is my all-time favorite 2-player map, Aztec is my all-time favorite 3-player map. FS is solid as always. Finally, we will be guaranteed a lot of SK Terran vs Crazy Zerg on Andromeda. Can't w8
I'm really happy there's going to be another tournament for Brood War (hooray for EleGant's return). The maps are also just what I was hoping for. I do have a few criticisms, though.

This doesn't make any sense to me. Don't people play against Koreans all the time on the Fish server? How is it so difficult to accomodate those who want to play in the TLS? If there is any trouble with communication, then get a translator. Also, what do you mean you are rusty at administering these events? This is TLS Season 3! You seem to have everything, including the broadcast dates, thoroughly planned out and organized.

noobish players are encouraged to participate in the qualifier - if you are lucky you get to play a top foreigner! but noobish players are nevertheless very unlikely to qualify for the final tournament.

I can tell you that you are heavily underestimating how much there is needed for this, and how understaffed we are. This would be tons of extra work, something we really can't do. Not including many different reasons.
I copy past mca64's statement, because he asked me for doing it:
why this plugin was blocked for my launcher? i added this registry to my launcher cause for some players like koget starcraft lags without my launcher. Here is screen: http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/2374/szet.jpg
Also, question from me, has this plugin any other special ability than adding gateway?

I also wonder the same thing, the file size is 99kb so I have some doubt that it's made just your modify your serverlist.

I will try, probably I will lose in the first round, but hey, it is BW! and ignore the map thing, I just downloaded the whole mappack.

Thanks for your reply, Epoxide. You still haven't answered my questions, though.
I have seen Korean players, such as Pado and Terror[fou], play in Defiler tours. It looks just as easy for them to join as it does for foreigners. How and why should it be any more complicated in the TLS?

I think the point is that Korean players, most of them at least are much better players than foreigners and this in turn can discourage foreign players from improving. Aside from Sziky, I can't see many foreigners having much luck against Koreans. That and as he mentioned in the OP, communication is a big issue(possibly lag too). They'll need a translation and someone who's reliable. Best to grow the foreign scene, improve the skill then with due time, possibly open TLS to the Korean gamers. Either way, they have SSL/SRT etc... and with streaming, they are making enough to survive and thrive on.

Come on now, can't we just say that this is a tournament for foreigners only. Koreans have sospa, china seems to have their own little scene. And we have this. Let's not beat around the bush.
Someone took a lot of hard drugs before selecting Destination for a tournament. It is probably one of the most boring maps that have ever appeared in the history of starcraft. Prepare to see cannons and tanks being laid on exps for 30+ minutes straight without any attack happening. Its a terrible choice.

Hi, BigFan.
You say that Korean players will discourage foreigners from improving because Koreans are much better. I believe the opposite is true: Having a better crop of tournament players will make the scene more competitive and will push foreigners to improve their game.
I'm not saying we should allow ex-progamers or SSL/SRT players in the TLS, as their skill level is much higher than even Sziky's. What I am suggesting is that we allow lower-level Korean players (i.e. amateurs and lower) that can communicate with officials and follow the rules of the tournament and, of course, not lag in their games with other players.

Out of curiosity, are there any ex-SC2 but also ex-BW players playing? Like, I know LaLush tried to qualify last season, but we've certainly had quite a few more ex-BWers retire from SC2 since then.

I think we got Naugrim last season and LuckyFool to play with us this season.

Definitely, FS was released when I first started watching progames and I haven't even heard of Andromeda prior to that.

Setting up the TLS Server: . Ensure you are running Starcraft: Brood War version 1.16.1 Make sure you have either Chaoslauncher for 1.16.1 or wLauncher installed on your computer.
Is this really the smartest idea? Using a dead server to run your qualifiers on?

What's wrong with it, it only needs to be used for the duration of the qualifiers, people won't be laddering on it xD

Yes, but it's a good way to lose a couple of participants to play on an otherwise unknown server.

On the other hand, playing on iCCup means that players they've blacklisted can't participate in the tour...
Don't know if that's the only reason for a separate server being used, but it's something to consider anyway.

Don't know if that's the only reason for a separate server being used, but it's something to consider anyway.
iCCup doesn't allow tours to be run on their server if ANY of the players in the tournament are banned players. So dotY and so on can't play in TLS, or else TLS has to be run on a different server. Pretty sure that's why Nation Wars moved to Fish.

Yeah, that's what I meant, although my choice of words was a bit clumsy (English is HARD). Also, Nation Wars moved to Fish because the organizer, LRM)Game, is blacklisted on iCCup.

I don't really think we are capable of improving on KESPA maps. We could add in foreigner maps and get them as tournament ready as possible before playing them- -negativezero-'s Overwatch is a prime example of a map that could be used in tournaments.

I would also love to see a foreign made map thrown into the map pool, and Overwatch is one of my all-time favorites. I feel sort of dirty complaining about map choices for such an awesome event that's had so much work put into it (and for the record, I don't think the map pool is all that bad), but 1 foreign map in the pool is something that I would like to see in future events.
Of course, there would be probably be a lot of people whining about using untested, non-KeSPA maps, so I'm just speaking for myself here. Also, I really hope I don't come across as a whiner here, because I <3 TLS and everyone involved in making it happen
You should ask Freakling to do map debugging and mining optimization he manages to do it so that lathing screwups are minimized and each play has equal mining (believe it or not, most maps allow certain positions in main/nat/3rd have somewhat unequal mining even though the mineral patches look balanced) also I feel like a foreign map would need more tours/publicity/games/testing before being used in a big tourney like TLS
Awesome ! You think u can stop the zerg swarm just by adding this maps ? Admirable but mistaken , in swarm we trust and all shall fall.Prepare , death and chaos is coming.
Can anyone stop Sziky's Swarm? Tune in to find out.
LOLOLOL. I was just thinking when the next TLS is gonna be and say to myself "i have a some feeling about this, lets go to TL" and suddenly found news for TLS from today :D :D :D BW is talking to me you know! This made me so happy. Much love for sayle and everyone involved! GOGOGO protoss winner this time, it can be Draw or maybe Wands is good enough already? You guys now have jaehoon, best and jangbi at your side, take their power and hit the swarm! Also can we have Champion vs Jangbi showmatch please?

I would love to see Judgement Day
or La Mancha
or maybe even Bloody Ridge, Fortress SE, Grand Line SE anyone ? And what about that Benzene map ? or maybe even Roadrunner, Colosseum II ? Beltway was sweet too !
To be perfectly honest I'm pretty tired of seeing the same maps played over and over and OVER AGAIN, when the amount of awesome maps that can be used is just staggering.. and maps that many people know of course, because they were used in KeSPA tournaments. Adding one non-KeSPA map would be even more amazing ! Like this one for example --> http://i.imgur.com/q2A5z6D.jpg looks pretty neat, and balanced
Seriously guys ! Some fresh air in the next tournaments please ?
Thanks !
But nevertheless, I think this is going to be a good tournament.

Honestly I think at the foreign level of play I don't think map balance as important as long as there aren't glaring imbalances...so as long as te maps are decently balanced and interesting I think they're fine...
Also can we have sziky winner of TLS vs Bisu show match please.

That should be enough to motivate me to beat Sziky.
What dRaW??? I was really hyped to see how you're getting on . Why are you forfeiting? Don't lose motivation- I know last season may have looked a little bleak to you but the only way is up!
