They could have easily called it something else, but no, it had to have exactly the same initials. Red flag to me. Yes, I'm sure they were attempting to capitalize on the fame of the defunct tournament series created by a disgraced businessman and not just continuing to use the brand that they've been using for their SC2 tournaments since 2014.

I dont think they're trying to capitalize on Sonic's league at all, but at the same time, when SS2L was announced, Sonic's thing had been going on for 9 seasons at that point.

- spotv/jinair want to have the most popular players to get better viewership - expros/streamers (especially the most popular ones who earn the most) don't wan't to compete in multiple tournaments, since it's not profitable for them (most of them will not get any earnings anyway) I can't blame either, although additionals tournaments can only be good for the scene Also, Sonic receives too little credit imo, despite how the whole story turned out. I doubt BW would have remained popular enough for all the expros to take the decision to come back in BW (at least the recent 2015/16 ones)

I liked the GSL back when it was a single-elimination BW tournament. The SSL will definitely need to expand the format in future seasons to allow players who don't yet have popularity to earn a spot through merit. My ideal format would be a series of four-man MSL-style groups--- + Show Spoiler + A vs B C vs D Winner(A,B) vs Winner(C,D) winner advances Loser(A,B) vs Loser(C,D) loser is out Loser[Winner(A,B), Winner(C,D)] vs Winner[Loser(A,B), Loser(C,D)] winner advances and loser is out ---where each match is Bo3 and groups are picked at random. Then in the Ro8 it would be single-elimination Bo5s.
