Since you guys brought some tears to my eyes by bringing up some *really* old school names in a previous thread, I figured I'd post some old pictures from various tournaments / my time in Korea to put some faces to the names...
From WCG 2000 tournament held in NYC.
Crexis, fondling the token, large-chested announcer woman at WCG. Crexis took 2nd place at the AoEII tournament.
Graciously / sarcastically accepting 1st place trophy at WCG.
=]ABS[=sVen, the lesser known but very skilled countryman of =]ABS[=Slayer.
Smuft.
Tsunami.
=[ABS]=Slayer, considered one of the best if not the best foreign pro gamer between maybe 2000-2002?
X_Mage_X, much beloved/despised Kali youngster.
Sindread on left, {PH}Jester on right.
NTT.
orky-asmodey.
Chaplan, of the mighty Chaplan and Renih 2v2 team.

He popularized the style, yeah. I really enjoyed playing against him and his aggressive approach as it made for some extremely exciting / technically skillful games.
On May 14 2008 08:58 Kennigit wrote: Oh woah crazy. Pillars what are you doing now? i heard you were doing MBA or something.
Left Blizzard 4-5 months ago, still trying to figure out what I want to do next. Might head back to school, or do some volunteer work abroad. Right now I'm just living with an old friend back in Massachusetts and playing poker for a living.
I remember in 01 Maynard was telling a story about him and Dudey ( I think it was Dudey ) were sneaking into the room were grrr... was having sex with some korean girl and they were playing " commandos. " It was pretty funny.
On May 14 2008 09:51 Lobotomy wrote: Pillars were you @ 01 WCG in USA? I forget.
Yeah, I forget if it was 2000 or 2001. I didn't end up making the trip to Korea for the finals though, as I had school coming up, I hate long plane rides, and unless I dedicated like three straight months to getting back in highly competitive shape I didn't have much of a shot of winning.
SOSO! YOU FORGOT SOSO! Unless I missed him in one of the pics.
That's awesome that you shared. There isn't a whole lot left from that time, but that was really the height of non-Korean gaming. Since then, we've just been trying to follow the same path and falling further and further behind.
On May 14 2008 10:13 Lobotomy wrote: Were you there with Sindread and Jester? Because that's when I was there.
Froz won that year, he kind of came out of nowhere.
Froz didn't attend the year that I won. It was 2000 I think. Sindread and Jester were there, yes. They probably just showed up in 2001 as well when you went and Froz won.

Haha, didn't forget Soso, just don't have any pictures of him.
Here is a thread i dug up naming most if not all the non kors that went to korea for a time. here ya are. Also it was SCU vs intotherain not into the rainbow on tv.
Episode-=V=- is dirty. I remember playing in some scrubby $50 tourney where they(Him and another clanmate) beat Rush)_Wizard and BlueWolf in the finals :D
Baller ass P
What about GopheR, Cosmo, Season? no love for rush?
Wow pillars sick! Forever ago I remember downloading my first vod was of you playing some korean. I remember thinking it was the coolest thing to watch the pros play. lol.
hmm i think i got fucked up by Kain-The-Feared couple years ago my friend kept talking about how great it was that he got into The-Feared and i was like wtf? =p
wow shitt this is crazy i dont even know half the ppl at all lol and mostly by name only anyway >_> how did the foreign pros start getting to korea anyway? i know rekrul's story but wasn't his time already a bit more developed in SC progaming?
006trevelyan, supercosmo, 5th fire, multifaith, straylight, Dared were any known amongst good gamers?
i remember when saft played bo5 against GRR in pvp lost 2-3 or something back in 2001 or so, was impressed. Everyone where i lived thought XDS was the coolest clan ever
Lol I never really talked to most of these dudes, but I remember all of the names. FUcking flashback to high school man, like right when I started playing
remember reading an interview where she mentionend how shed mine >100 mins more than her opponents in the first few minutes by setting rallyepoints to the mins...
When did H_Paul_W /H_paul_WII come onto the scene?I think he was pretty dominate around 2002-2003?But im not sure if he played or was know before that.
Speaking of channels some that i really enjoyed were toyland,nohunters~,Wis-, merhh i cant think of any other now.
I remember watching you and Thor on TV several years ago, but I never knew who either one of you were until now.
During the PKO, you were the one who Kim Tae Hyung (the younger of the OGN commentators with glasses) walked up to and held this amazing conversation with during pre-game time:
Tae Hyung: WEE-UH YOO PU-RUM?
Pillars: United States.
Tae Hyung: ...
So awkward and funny
By the way, you can see Gundam behind Grrr in one of the pictures
ZeeRaX and Mr.X, this is from their warcraft days, but they were fucking awesome at Starcraft. I actually remember sitting next to ZeeRaX when he played Pillars one night maybe 8 or more years ago.
Haha back then I had never played an online computer game. Not because I was too young... just wasn't into it at all (nobody had really introduced me to it)
I am forgetting alot more, but you get the picture :D The old days are gone, brings back so many memories, and to me, with the people listed above, that was STARCRAFT and those days were the best enjoyable times i've ever had playing. It seemed to fade when [GG99]SlayeR made his mark as the all time world champion starcraft player (i think he still is if he played again). Either Slayer or Pillars = #1 IMO. Anyways, with no replays out to ruin SC/BW, those days you had to work hard and pay attention. R.I.P the old school =]
On May 15 2008 15:09 BunkerPush wrote: Its so good to see great players like Pillars again you guys are forgetting so many important figures though!! I cant believe you!
Some of the best damn players ever (old school) minus the ones already mentioned:
[o]ishmael - Probrably one of the best protoss players and followed by many.. cant believe nobody mentioned him yet!
[s]Thuggy - This kid was amazing.. a must to put on here. How can u forget thuggy =P
Kinzerg+)3esT - Kid was from 99-01 days and has the SICKest zerg on vanilla. Dunno what happened to him though.
St_EaGle..!! aka MasteR_[EaGlE] and Golban'XEaGlE
What about NEWBIEMCNASTY!!!! omg
You missed Whear too
Others worth noting most definately too: (in no order)...

Oh man, good work. I feel like you randomly had all of those names already compiled on some word document from like 1997 - 2003 though. Heh.
"Either Slayer or Pillars = #1 IMO."
This is nowhere near true...during my prime I'd place myself among the top foreigners, but at no point was I ever the #1 foreigner.
"Anyways, with no replays out to ruin SC/BW, those days you had to work hard and pay attention."
This is an important comment. It was certainly very exciting to play the game 'in the dark' as it were, and to be part of the community while people were still figuring out optimal play. In some sense, naturally talented players had a greater edge back then since they could make up for slightly inferior technical skills with creative overall game plans / situational awareness / tactical ability.
Thanks for bringing up 50+ additional names / tags =].
Pretty sick pictures and memories in here. I wish I bought a $12 camera back in 2001 to take some pictures of my pro gaming moments in Korea. Hard to believe this game has 10 years of history now.
Couple of forgotten names
IN-Lameking, SuperCondomUser (TF-Kevin?), Zileas, Crazyjim and Giggles
K@boom! on kali (aka [LD]2, aka MannerCookie)
Clans Imports\"/ and ~Lizard are also not forgotten.
Btw this thread really isnt complete without an orange haired elky pic, someone post pls.

Pillars that was just my opinion of the times back then. I always thought it would either be between you or =[aBs]=SlayeR =P
But your right, because then you have all of the other top foreigners too who played just as well. I dunno, its a hard call, but you win games and lose games, thats the whole functionality of the glorious game

i didn't play when any of these guys did, but it's shit like this that makes me love bw even more not only does it have a thriving community now, but it has an amazing history with SO many talented players... it's just incredible, not many games can produce that kind of popularity/commitment.

We also got him to show up in 2005 Phenoix prelims he was kinda whacky then.I never got a group pic from 2004 vegas.T_T
When i looked through battle reports in 99,00,01 when replays didn exist.. around this time.. i used to listen to one SONG non stop. Back in 08 when i hear this song a shiver runs down my spin and i remember about all these old names.. and the flair and excitement bw still had back then..
Trek, I always thought ZealoT was pretty good especially for back in that time. I remember watching him ZvP and ZvZ alot of amateur koreans back then and he raped them. He also beat a lot of known gamers too. He may not have been the best of course, but was decent IMO
You may still be able to find his replays, although they will prob be broken.
- Pillars you look fabulous getting into that dress. -eVERLAST berating Maynard (observe the finger!) is classic. - I've always suspected a touch of manlove between Grrrr... and Maynard -- now I have proof. - Chaplan looks too clean and well groomed to have ever been a good gamer (just kidding, you were great at Guild Wars!). - Red is most definitely not ElkY's color.

He was also one of the best foreign 2v2 players in the world, yo. Not his fault team play got little to no recognition in the BW universe. He got tons of respect from other top players 'in the know', however.
Speaking of his Guild Wars skillz, he was actually hired by Arena.net over a year ago and is working out there in Seattle as a game designer.

Yeah, I remember you Lizards. I had a run in with CrazyJim at one point, but overall I really respected his skill; he was one of the more talented 'lesser known' players back then.

Ahahaha oh man that's adorable =]. Yeah I used Lobotomy as my nick when playing in the first KBK tournament. Seeded 4th out of 128 in the preliminaries, but only managed to make it to the top 32 in the tournament itself. Jolly made it the further out of all the foreigners, making it to the round of 8 before losing a ZvP match.
Single-elimination tournaments were rough justice, and were the norm back then.

No comment on the looking fabulous in that dress part of my post? I thought that was pretty good, better than my friendly little jab at Chaplan.
Chaplan's my buddy and we speak regularly. I know he works for Arena.net

Hmmm. I couldn't figure the comment out, though. Are you saying I looked good BEFORE I got into the dress, or after? Or do you think I look good without the dress, but even better with the dress? Are you asking me on a date?

stretching my memory bank here but i recall grr being random until patch 1.03? remember 1.03 being the patch where hatchery was increased to 350 minerals this made him change to protoss only because it fucked up zerg
couple of once popular now forgotten, never achieved anything besides internet/replay fame:
BrEEzE[AKUTA], [BlazE]Eugene, =AKARAKA=, BritneySpears (not sure about aka, but there was a famous replay vs Boxer, ZvT that probably started many people with watching pro reps), KimWanChul (replays again), Niza (went pro, but earlier he was replay-famous).
[S13]Zealot and Cantona are both danish. Anyone remember another dane, [25]Arch/[Feel]..Arch? i think he was the better player for a long period of time back then..
Villert was cool, but he did bottom feed his way to that ladder win
I know all the names but only ever talked/played with the danes/swedes/norwegians..

The most known case was when he broke his keyboard after he lost an hour+ game against Boxer in WCG. Not very related: I remember the Boxer mass blind on observers PP was against Didi8.
lol, I was in a clan with nanogirl.. recognize a few of the names up there. Last I heard she was working for a computer gaming company (maybe 5 years ago?) who picked her up from online handle recognition in her app.

Wow so great nostalgia. I basically remember EVERY single name on that list, back when I was 13 to 14 and played Kali and all those smurfs in the KBK times and so on. I think out of the list there is nobody I haven't played
Starcraft will probably remain the best game ever, no matter what graphics and features they will add to future games, the excitement and adrenaline will remain unmatched.
Thanks Pillars, I have a so many pictures from back in the days, might upload them one sunny day. Cheers to all ppl on that list, got a place in my heart reserved for those memories.

Villert was cool, but he did bottom feed his way to that ladder win
I know all the names but only ever talked/played with the danes/swedes/norwegians..
remember seeing his nick in the finals of some big tour was it combined nor-dnk wcg prelim where he met sven in finals? or am i totally wrong?
ah, and remember watching vod at broodwar.com where pillars play pvp on dire and one of the players win with mass carrier : )
pillars, could u tell us your current thoughts on scII?

Not really gonna say much about a game which is still in development. I haven't been actively involved with the project for awhile now, so I'm just as curious as you guys about how it will continue to develop.
I remeber having Xd`s~Kiwi on my friend list for like 2 months mutual he said to add him so we could play a game i was beggin after we never played and we removed eatch other after a long while lol.

how about reasons for stopping working there. any insights to share from your experience from the `inside`?
do you know about any other former gosus who are involved in scII?
ahaha, this makes me feel so new. :o I recently player some guy in thefear, who decided to come back to sc. When I raped him badly (and I was a huge noob in my noob clan) I think he went back to WCIII.
nice to see some older pictures. i too regret quite a bit i never carried a camera with me (the few times i did i've long since lost the pictures, maybe my mommy has some). i've been around for a long time and seen some cool stuff.
someone mentioned DaRed. I don't think he played starcraft for very long, although I knew him from red alert. it was hearing about his great success (and the moderate success of another swedish player) that convinced me to take a try at playing online poker for a living.
what a lot of you newer guys don't realize is that there's not really just "old school" and "now". i personally was still involved in the bw community almost nonstop from when the game released up until a few months after WDT and i would have considered everything that happened after the teamliquid website started way way way after starcraft's heyday
also it's kinda funny how people who were "just around", even vaguely, get remembered and lumped in with other people who were quite remarkable during their reign as players. fortunately for the sake of truthful posterity i was around long enough and known to enough people that still no one gets confused about my absolute mediocrity

pretty sure it was thor. definitely wasn't me. i was not in korea during the time that maynard, pillars, thor, and grr were in korea (although grrr was still there when i went, and maynard was there visiting and playing in WCG during that period as well). i was, however, quite envious at the time

Hi Dudey =].
hello old friend. i suspect we'd get along better these days than before.. since i'm older than 16 obviously.
Wow. Pillars and PEPE!. Talk about bringing back memories. I remember Maynard came and stayed at my crappy place back in the day to go to a tourney with me. And I remember the longest 1on1 game ever for me was against jeSteR at a LAN party. I think it was almost 2 hours long on Hunters. Man so long ago.
And look at that at page 5 I see Idra posting something, Nazgul quoting that but then the name is not "Idra", but "HungZerg" So Idra used to play Zerg? And was called freaking HungZerg? lol

Awesome to see these really old pictures. Must've been a blast being at the top of the game when starcraft was still young. It's also pretty incredible seeing how bad the average camera used to be. I hadn't really noticed before.

rem i said to this guy "i went to this concert yesterday, and i imagined the hall full of spectators watching a starcraft tournament. wouldnt that have been awesome???" and he was like "um... its happening in korea". i coudlnt believe it :p
Oh eVERLAST. I remember I played that guy once in some tourney and barely won. I also remember breaking my CD after losing a 2on2 tourney with Maynard in the round before we would have been flown to Sweden. Woulda loved to have seen some Swedish girls.
On February 14 2010 05:47 Loophole wrote: What a thread. I remember RushWizard, that guy was so much fun to watch with his constant raiding and harrassment.
eVerlast was the shit. Reminds me of that epic end of ladder race to finish first on the bnet ladder.
wow this makes me feel newschool, and i started playing in jan '99^^ great to see those oldschool names put to some faces finally, still remember most of them! thanks for the thread+thanks for bumping :D
I remember vividly the time when a bunch of those old school players were in Korea in the same team.
In late 2002 early 2003 a team called AMD Dream Team was competing in the Korean proleagues and consisted of the following players: Grrr... Elky Nazgul Smuft Jinnam Jinsu V-Gundam
I use to really like montaro. He was super old school, and had his own website where he would talk about his games. I think it was www.montaro.org or something. Was alot of fun!
Also gotta rep kain-the-feared for being local to edmonton. He was really really good.
weird. I hadn't heard of you and then for some random reason i read your name and looked you up on liquipedia about 5 mins ago. Then came here and saw this thread by you...weird day.
hah awesome thread, i remember all those names; i feel old. every 6 months ago i watch some of the old reps; watched grrrr vs fish @wcg 01 or 02 the other day. these guys were so much more entertaining to watch than the mono-style of play most players succumb to now days.
be cool to know what they are up to - Slayer/Sven/Fish/Grrr/NTT/Nazgul/Maynard etcetc...
wow this is old school. I remember reading about these names back when i was 14-15 years old(im 25 now) playing starcraft as a little nublet( i still am a nub maybe not as scrawny as i was back then) Im soo glad this was bumped enjoyed looking at the pictures ^^
Oh wow i remember watching replays of these players. Every name is telling me something. Sven and Slayer - really great players. First "gosus" i saw live was sYs(DUNE) and Satanik and i was like wtf, these guys are fast. I remember talking with Satanik about Magic the Gatherings - wow that is nostalgy
I talked to Kain afew days ago actually, he'll be messing around on SC2 but probably wont be back with serious gaming, since hes pretty busy with Poker/DJing.
My brother actually went to school with Sven. They used to hang out all the time, and as a result our families know each other really well. I met both Sven and Slayer on several occasions, though I've rarely seen them play. Last I heard Slayer went over to playing poker, but that's a couple of years back and he might be doing something else at the current time. As for Sven, I think he's studying.
Here's a norwegian documentary (with english subtitles) that follows Slayer as he ventures abroad to Korea where he participate in the Korean PGL tournament. The documentary also features Sven's input on the game. Really oldschool shit right here.
Jesus those were in 2000? Does not seem so long ago >_< . Rekrul roflstomped me in the ohio qualifiers. He and ghostclaw were minutes away from being DQ'd too :} (late coming back from lunch break....from across the parking lot).
it's too bad there is no pictures of GoRush, he's the one that won wcg2000. [GG99]Slayer were definitely the best foreigner until he stopped broodwar, he was always beating Elky in final.
Wow fun thread to read It was good to see some of you during the onset of the SC2 beta and hope to play with some of you again. If you ever feel like playing hit me up, aquanda.aquanda

I'll have to look around and see if I can find the pics from the i2e2 tourney in Cleveland that X'Ds sent 2 teams (1 for BW, 1 for some FPS at the time I can't remember) but {PH}jEsTeR ended up winning (along with every other i2e2 tournament just about). Kinda funny that I played him a bunch on Kali the night before trying to practice and he rick rolled me. Ended up getting 6th, which wasn't bad considering the competition (Jester, IN-Lameking, X'Ds~Cherry, X'Ds~Rook I think, X'Ds~Crow was there as well but I don't recall him playing.)
ZeeRaX and Mr.X, this is from their warcraft days, but they were fucking awesome at Starcraft. I actually remember sitting next to ZeeRaX when he played Pillars one night maybe 8 or more years ago.
Top pic from left to right... not sure whos on the far left...wulfgar, azteca, lothar's head peaking out, ash, and kinghillbilly, and on the bottom is meat, and nauticalsx holding the roofle sign.
I just put up all the old pics I could find from the first WCG held. Some are repeats and unfortunately I lost a lot of pics. They should be public to everyone if anyone wants to take a look:
Wow - so much nostalgia. I used to play with Chap n Ren back in the good ole days of Kali and Starshack. Oh the memories. And it's true, people on Kali didn't hack, you'd be black sheeped so damned fast, i mean these were the founding fathers of online rts, we rolled people on war2 before bnet was ever conceived. There's a nice little honor that comes with that background. I miss my kali bros. I think i miss axol the most- Gave me the time to teach me war2, and shared my inner passion for Tool as much as I, tho Maynard as well, given his handle i'm sure you knew where it derrived as well, as his old nick for war2 was Lord_Helmet. Good to see Dudey and Aqua still alive n kickin ;] Cheers mates.
What's up? I step away from the game for a mere 11 years and everyone seems to forget about me. Ask ~jolly~ who was the one protoss player he was afraid of back in 1999 (and who was the only other Protoss specialist in the top 10 on the SC ladder).
And which clan was the only clan to absolutely dominate the SC Gals back in the day (and treat them nicely even though we guessed correctly that they weren't gals at all)?
I couldn't help but dig up some old SC brackets from the PGL. Even after all of these years, I'm still pissed that I didn't prevail in the round of 32 because I was looking forward to knocking Jolly out of my bracket:
Damn everytime someone bumps this thread, I read it entirely and regret I haven't started to play this game earlier. I love it so much and I only've been around for 6 years... I would have loved to play on a very crowded bnet haha :'(
He sucks and hardly plays, but he still around. He wont 1v1 me because he has an insane rec vs me in warcraft 2 and starcraft 1 and doesn't want me to be able to post a positive score in a diff game. Pwnd
He will prolly hate me for the inevitable spam he receives
Found this thread by searching on Google for the old German clan "the sheep". Reason I looked for this: because I wanted to find a funny link to post on the wall of one of the guys behind http://www.clans.de (where also FiSheYe[pG] & Kambiz[pG]) were in.
Hope no one is upset for pushing it.
I find it awesome that one still knows so many of the guys from back then - or at least knows what they are still doing. And many of them have become so successful
- Liquid'Nazgul aka Nazgul[pG] - well, he owns TL - FiSheYe[pG] aka FA_FiSheYe - founder/investor of clans.de - Kambiz[pG] - back then the founder of DEF/pG - leads clans.de after having been in the - Korn[pG] aka [DEF]Korn - founder of PokerStrategy.com - ToT)Strafe( - serial entrepreneur of various random stuff, living in Thailand - had a short stint on the top 1 spot of SEA ladder in SC2 as well - Daniel 'Rekrul' Schreiber - became a successful poker pro (won a bracelet at the WSOP) and famously brought ElkY to poker - Bertrand' ElkY' Grospellier - the most famous French SC:BW and today poker player - one of the 3 most prominent advertising faces of the billion-dollar company PokerStars
Not SC, but also cool: the old SK quake team was built around the Reichelt brothers. One of them is the boss of ESL, another is a professional football player & for years the captain of Rot-Weiss Oberhausen: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Reichert
These alone would already make a great image story for eSports - showcasing how eSports nourishes competitiveness, sharp thinking, analysing situations, self-improvement, hard work, ...
It must be the same with everyone nearing their 30s, but I truly believe those were some of the greatest times. Fashion wasn't as prejudice, computers were a cool new thing for the masses and online gaming was being born in front of us. And it started out of nowhere, without any real financing or hourly "coaching rates". Everyone just invested themselves into god-knows-what and happily spent years playing on bnet without even the slightest idea why.

[GG14]ChoBo.SnP @ Lan Arena 7 Paris 2002, it's so sad i didn't think of taking photos of the GG team one year earlier in Marseille, you guys would have seen elky playing with sun glasses at night
Smuft used to post on our forums way back when - we used to play pickup games in Terran Strategy & he was a regular in our channel (idle). He would always argue with High-Tech (for those of you guys on US East - you might recognize that name) about different strategies. Anyways, he stopped frequenting our forums probably in 2001 or 2002, and we didn't hear from him. We always thought he died - and then BOOM, we saw him playing pro.
