JulyZerg offraces as random against ChoJJa on Neo Guillotine in the 2004 SKY Proleague R1. This is somewhat of a famous game because not only did JulyZerg win in a game he offraced, but he did it against another famous Zerg, ChoJJa, and won because he did a sunken break against 7, FUCKING SEVEN, sunken colonies aided by zerglings off a 1base 3rax academy +1 armour build. The camera shows ChoJJa's face when JulyZerg attempts it, and all he can do is grin. ChoJJa GG's and shakes JulyZerg's hand.
Sorry for the crappy quality, to upload to YouTube I had to stream my screen on the VOD on this page to download it, because Download Helper, etc didn't work. I had to center my stream over the VOD on the screen, therefore the quality isn't too great.
Ya this is a totally cool game. I have not since seen someone clear 7 sunkens with that few marines. The quality on this wasn't that great but it was worth a watch although I just skipped to when julyzerg was moving out but I couldn't see his upgrades was this the game he went +1 armor?
ChoJJa seems to be one of StarCraft's all-time best victims...seems he was on the losing end of so many unique and creative plays over the years.
Also do you see that ingame chat??? Look at how much it interferes with the game!!!! Thank god we've since disallowed that shit.......totally unacceptable
All the times i saw this clip from julyzerg highlight videos, i assumed he was the zerg, against i don't know who, and couldn't quite figure out why it was in those videos given that he lost. Also, reminds me again how fairly stupid it is that text chat is unallowed nowdays. Makes the game so much less human.
Great game, I actually want to know what they were saying in the in-game chat. I enjoy talking as well as mind games. I actually saw this play in a julyzerg pimp play video and wondered how a video of july getting his ass kicked made it in there. Now I know, thanks for posting this!
Edit: Somebody posted the exact same thing as me. Haha
Someone translate what the commentators were saying before the break... I bet it was something like.. "Nah it's impossible, he can't break with that much marines vs that much sunkens." *obs go views something else* *stim sound goes up* *sunken break*

Yea I know.
They actually seemed human!
why'd july go t? was chojja THAT good at zvz or something?
There was some rule back then that the same team wasn't allowed to play two of the same race right after another in a proleague game.
They had a zerg play before July so July had to pick a different race... in this case he randomed so that he had at least a 2/3rds chance to get a race he was good at. July was a pretty good amateur terran.

I've also heard that he didn't want to play as Z because he had "something up his sleeve" in his Z play or something so he went random. Then again, he has a 1/3 chance of getting Z still, so I don't know how accurate that is. Maybe this is when JulyZerg started to master muta micro anyone?
Brilliant, brilliant game. That sunken break was unreal. I kept thinking his push was about to run out of steam and then some more marines came and he kept at it. What a spectacular player.

Yeah pretty much. They something along the lines of: "Once he scans, he will know he can't go in."

chojja was rly beast in zvz :o back in the days he was consider one of the legendary zerg for sure even now he has tons of silver i think and only one msl gold.
but he won it over savior in the grand final in cyon.
xD he is very gm wow really good player. i think july has calculated every specific strategy if he happen to end up as T or P. and if z then just go standard i guess

I think the +1 armor was for the sunkens actually. If I have my numbers right, marines have 40 hp and sunkens do 40 explosive damage. Since marines are small units, explosive damage is halved against them, so it normally takes two hits exactly to kill a marine. When the marine instead has +1 armor, it takes three hits to kill a marine with a sunken.
This is such a sexy sunken break. It takes massive balls to take on 7 sunkens and a group of lings. Props to Chojja for being so good mannered about it~

correct!
but actually what really helped imo is the medics, thats the real armor :p
my favorite part is chojja reaction. there is a guy who just loves starcraft... he was impressed by what he did. thats admirable right there, more people should be like that.

whatever. i searched for it but couldnt find it. plus im sure all it was was a link to that crappy site with uber slow buffering for the VOD. i never said "OMG LOOK WHAT I FOUND I BET U HASNT SEEN DIS" or anything.

The exact ruling was that a where a player played on x map one week, that particular race could not play the next week/entry. So because July played Zerg on Neo Guillotine the previous game before for POS, so he had to go Random for the game against KTF. Worked wonders.

Haha same. I never understood why they would show the him losing in a highlight game. .
Btw, has any other progamer ever gone Random? I believe there was one in a 2v2 where a person went Random in the hopes of getting a second Zerg (I heard, and this very well could be wrong, that 2Zerg is banned as a team option in 2v2). But I'm more so querying about 1v1.
Chojja, my all time favourite zerg player. When I was noob and had problems with zvt I used to watch like 10 of his replays in a row vs t (the day when you could still find lots of pro reps) and I'd be sort of lifted out of my slump

You couldn't have two of the same race in 2v2, so yes, some people went random. It happened several times on DMZ, where they were hoping to get a second Terran so they could scv rush better. That map was fun to watch for about three games...
I'll leave the 1v1 question to someone who remembers more than I do.
You can't say a sunken kills a +1armorMarine with 3 hits because the amount of time it takes a sunken to hit 3 times allows the medics to heal the marines so much more, so without focus firing the sunkens, +1 armor is very very strong.
Chojja is so great ... He is so good mannered and showed respect to his oponent even if he allin cheesed him. I remember there was a story where he lost to Bisu ( or some other player ) and went on a flight to some country in europe ( not sure ) just to shook his oponent hand after he lost.

lol who makes up stories like this to get on a plane to shake a guys hand?

This is true... it seems like it would do better than the +1 timing attack.
There any way to compare this other than theorycrafting?
Also, chojja's reaction is awesome. And July is awesome for doing that break, hah.
maan, i really miss those old times, see how both July and Chojja chat during the game they shake their hands and everything is ok, nowadays all that is ruined, we get disqualifications for tiping ''pppp'', we get Hwasin and BeSt pointing thumbs down to their opponentes, no more that warm feeling that was attached to starcraft

Idra can learn something from this .....
... every thread gets an Idra BM comment, somehow.. LOL
anyways Loved chojja's personality in the vid.. I think a lot of newer TLnetters like me dont know much about him or other greats from the past, so I dig the thread.

You have a good point about the medics, but I wasn't trying to assume that each sunken would target a single marine and hit it three times in a row.
In fact, due to the way the sunken AI works, I'm sure that there were many instances of two sunkens attacking the same marine, which would kill it without +1 armor (regardless of medic support)
Also note that when he first pushed in, the medics were clumped on the right side and sent in afterward, leaving the first ~10 crucial left hand side marines without medic support. Without +1 armor, these marines would have surely melted, and regardless of medic support, he would definitely not have broken that sunken line.

back in the day proleague was only a bo3 (2 1v1's and 1 2v2). a rule they had was that you couldn't send out the same race twice in a row for the same map each entry. july carried POS on his back and they decided that they would try their luck out by sending him out on guillotine as random rather than zerg. worked out well in the end.
